How much is one expected to pay for a first edition copy of this (Assuming that there were other editions) complete with slightly-torn paper cover and a page torn from the 25th July 1953 edition of "The New Statesman and Nation" reviewing the book? My local bookseller wants 0. I thought that a tenth of this would be reasonable. My reason for wanting a copy of it is that I read it originally in the mid 60's when first becoming interested in Cybernetics. (I still have my copy of Guilbaud's "What is Cybernetics?" that I purchased in 1967)

Go Astroboy! > American's have more of a military interest- replace manned tanks and planes. As you're probably aware, the japanese economy has been very slow for a decade and more, plus the young people are not procreating at a quick enough rate to sustain social programs for retirees, plus the retirees are living to an older age due to advances in medical technology, etc. So the question is, who will pay for the social programs and who will take care of the retirees in their old age? Many countries in Europe - esp those with big social programs - have similar problems. This is also true in the US, but here immigration is helping to mitigate the situation. To deal with these problems, one direction the japanese are taking is to develop robots which can help take care of the elderly, in the absence of enuf young people. This seems to be the general impetous behind their robotics programs. Regards their "big" govt-funded projects, this is at least the 3rd or 4th regards AI. They had one for Prolog [called 3rd Generation, IIRC], one for neural nets, now one for robotics.

Pets v/s computers. Why do USA army have soldiers shoot pigs and then treat them to get "real world feeling"

Yes,
See the newspaper.
For the Iraq war, instead of using the best simulation models as PETA
activists wanted, the USA Army had the soldiers shoot pigs (I don't
know if the soldiers themselves had to shoot the pigs, or others shot
them for them) and then had to treat the pigs -------------- so that
for the Iraq war, when there were no medics available, they could
treat their comrades in arms

Computers are mathematical instruments --------------- they say one
emotion, two emotion, three emotion ---------- one cow, two cow, three
cow, --------- one god, two god, three god, ------- one ball,
two ball, three ball ------- without ever knowing what an emotion, a
cow, a god, a ball, or an article EVER is.

Computers have no perception --------- and do not deceive yourself
that they ever will have. I am a PhD in Computer Science/
specialization Artificial Intelligence and had to discuss with Dr S B
Khadkikar, PhD, retired head of theoretical physics department,
physics research laboratory, ahmedabad and now perhaps still serving
in space science department.

While the computer is not to be underestimated ------------- it is
only mathematics --------- not physics, not language, not beauty, not
philosophy.

This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 2440 and 3156)
How cannon fodder relates to emotion remains a mystery. However your
purpose here does not.

There is no math in computers.

2.MI5 getting snooty & heres a job real-time

There are 23 houses in an area and 3 children under the age of
12....the area may be ready for clearance, by whom? and why haven't
the occupants been told that the population should be reduced to
minimum?

The only heterosexual fem has been arrested for unknown reason and
cause and was pregnant at the time, and she lost the child. who's?

There have been regular births of twin cats in the area , all the twin
kitties have been blue and gold, How?

and finally..the obstratrician was a gay bloke, how?

The question is, how do the men increase the population of people?
what rights and laws exist to protect a mans right to fecundity? and
the unborn child? and how ever will the work, passtime study into
species extion and media that the only heterosexual female who was
parenting at that time will ever be recovered?

5.Teaching computers how to LIE (say untruths) to teach them LOVE / PAIN / FEELINGS

Hi,
I have often thought of how to teach computers love, pain, feelings.
In order to do that we have to teach them how to LIE. The subtelity of
lying leads to the maturity, knowledge of love, feelings and
ultimately the soul artificial intelligence.

Please debate.
