  • 1. Cant see mail properties on users
Just got EX2007 installed. When I create a new mailbox for an existing user I do not see the the exchange tabs when I open the users properties. Did I do something wrong? Thanks.
  • 2. Mail enable distribution group
How can I enable distribution group with an outside email address? I have bunch of users in AD that have same email address and thought to put them in to distribution group and assign the outside email to it. Well, I don't know how to do it. I can create an exchange mailbox for the distribution group but can not associate the group to outside mail address. Please help.
  • 3. Exchange 2003 same email addy 2 different contacts
We have two different contacts in Exchange that need to use the same SMTP email address is this possible? If so how? Thank you
  • 4. Moving the system attendant mailbox
Hello all, I am currently seperating out my mailstore databses. I am doing this because of the db totals about 150 gig. I want to dump the default store for a few reasons but one being that anyone in this store cannot do an active sync (no problems in other stores) and I have seen jet engine errors in the eventvwr. So I know it's only a matter of time. So anyways, I am almost done moving my users to the others stores, I just need to prepare to dump the default priv1.edb. I am running windows 03, exchange 03 sp2. I have read that all I have to do in 03 is simply delete the store and restart the attendant service. Can anyone verify that this is true?

You are not going to do any upgrades; migration is what you will be
I would get your server to 2003 first of all.
What help do you need?
You can leave your native 2003 forest alone and introduce a 2008
member server to it.
You can do a migration from an Exchange 2003 box to a 20next box; both
MBX and PFs.

Thank you for the reply Mark.

Was hoping to follow something like this:

Leave exchange 2003 on the windows 2000 server for now
Install windows 2008 on my new hardare
Add it as a member server to my 2003 AD domain
Install exchange 2007 on this new 2008 box.
Migrate the mailboxes from 2003 exchange to 2007 exchange (and anything else
Remove the 2000 box (and therefore 2003 exchange from the domain)

Understanding the correct path (i.e is the above correct) to migrate
2003exchange (when hosted on 2k) to 2007exchange (when this installation is
deployed on a new 2008 member server) on 2003ad domain. Any tutorial
showing me the correct steps in the correct order for example would be
helpful. Msexchange.org is normally pretty good for this sort of stuff but
having trouble finding something relevant. Plus experts such as yourself are
great at pointing out any possible pitfalls im pretty likley to fall into if
i dont ask :-)

excellent, that sounds like what i need to do.

again sounds like what i need to do.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

msexchange.org has got a ton (tonne?) of tutorials with screen shots.
Go there.
I'm a little unsure as to whether Exchange is going to like the
Windows 2000 part of it though. It's been sooooo many years since I
encountered someone with a 2k box and E03 on top of it. Perhaps
someone can give you a definitive "doesn't matter" or "betcha ass you
gotta go to w2k3SP2".

Cheers, will keep looking. Couldnt find anything specifc enough to my
situation, its just a bit of an underlying worry.

If you haven't found anything specific about your migration plan after
two+ years you can assume there isn't anything that's a show-stopper
for you.

I read this article:

makes the migration look far too easy essentially saying:

run windows update
install exchange 2007
move mailbox
uninstall exchange 2003

No mention of forrest prep / domain prep which IIRC took me ages to prepare
when installing exchange 2003 about 6 - 7 years ago on my (now old) w2k
server box.

Just dont believe its as easy as the above article suggests hence my post.

If Exchange detects the process have not been run already it will run
them for you and the setup just takes longer. Fine for single domain
implementations but you might not want to do that if you have a
globally deployed forest and many domains.

1.upgrade to Exchange 2007 or wait for 2010

We are currently on 2003 and I want to upgrade exchange but need to find out
if I should wait or do it now? Also if I wait can you upgrade from 2003 to
2010 without having to jump to 2007? Thank you for your replies.

2.Upgrading from 2007 to 2010, failure...

Hi All !

I've experienced the worst hours in my life trying to upgrade my Exchange
2007 to 2010 and fortunately for me, everything was backed-up, but it was
hard to swallow!
Our network is installed with a few servers and a few tenths of PCs.
The domain is 2003Native, I had successfully migrated from our good old
Exchange 2003 last year and was very interested in the brand new capabilities
offered by 2010 !
Certificates are managed by the domain Root_CA and I also implemented a GPO
to manage all this as advised.
I read many white papers, blogs and the excellent Exchange 2010 Unleashed by
Rand Moritomo that I used as a kind of road map to transition to Exchange
2010 !
Unfortunately, the success was not at the end of the road this time and I
definitely want to know if I was unlucky or simply... incompetent!
Let's get back to what happened!
I'm really surprised as it should have been the simplest scenario !
Beforehand, I should mention that my domain is 8 years old and working
seamlessly as well as my servers included my Exchange 2007 SP2 for a year
All our servers (8 x Windows 2003 SP 2 / Windows 2008 SP2 - 32 and 64 bits)
have been virtualized a couple of years ago.
As mentioned in Rand Morimoto's book :
1) My Exchange 2007 was already upgraded to SP2
2) The forest and domain had already been brought to windows 2003
functional level
3) My GC is available for many years in the site and replicating properly
4) I had installed a Windows 2008 SP2 up to date
5) I had installed AD LDIFDE
6) Prerequisites were already installed on the future Exchange 2010 server
7) I ran the setup in graphic mode and all steps were successfully and
thoroughly checked and implemented till the final one.
I obviously chose the classic roles (CAS + Mailbox + Hub Transport).
8) CAS had been installed through the setup procedure.
9) Transfer OWA, ACtiveSync and Outlook Anywhere traffic to new CAS Servers
--> this is what I probably missed or don't know how to do :-(
I just let the automatic process do what was necessary.
I guess that if the custom roles are automatically selected it can only be
done afterwards.
10) Install Hub transport role and configure: the automatic process is
supposed to have installed it, I later tried to configured this role
11) Transfer inbound and outbound mail traffic to the 2010 : I suppose that
Rand is talking about rules in the router config, MX Record and all that kind
of stuff ?
12) Install Mailbox server (no DAG for me). Done automatically by the setup
13) Create Public folder replicas on Exchange 2010 server using
AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 : I did try many times but to no avail (see
below, explanation).
14) Move mailboxes to Exchange 2010 : this was ok !
15) Rehome the OAB to Exchange 2010 : this was ok too.
16) Transfer all Public Folder replica to EXCH2010 folder store: folder
store created but couldn't do that since I couldn't first replicate...
17) delete public and private information stores : not done...
18) Uninstall Exch 2007: not done...

At the end of the setup process, I managed to open the EMC.
All looked good as I was browsing in the interface till I get to the OWA
section where I got a message similar to this:
"Exception from HResult = -2147463160. etc..."
In the event manager I also had an error talking about a problem with the
Owa root site but what I couldn't understand was that it was trying to access
my... Exchange 2007 Server while the other data were related to the new
Exchange 2010 server!!!!
I got back to the settings, created a send connector, moved the mailboxes
and the OAB till I got stuck with the Public Folders...
I then tried the AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 from the EXC2010 Powershell but
I kept getting a message stating that it couldn't find public folders with
the name mentioned (yet I put simple and double quotes since the name was
But I wasn't quite sure of the name required and tried both the one before
the name of the server in the public folders console and the one under with
the hierarchy, this was something like "Dossiers publics par dfaut" /
"Default Public Folders", and doing the same thing from the Exchange 2007
server I kept getting a message that it couldn't find a public folder
database on the Exchange 2010 server!!!
Yet I had created it!

Weirdly enough OWA was working, I could connect to the site
"https://myexchangeserver2010/owa" browse through my mailbox, send and
receive emails inside and outside, select addresses, checked the calendar,
etc but I think that's because my Exchange 2007 server was still in charge
of the send and receive connector !
Talking about that, the "send connector" I had created in the Exchange 2010
EMC it had vanished and was now in the Exchange 2007 EMC...
There are definitely some important missing steps in the full scenario and
was unable to complete the process, therefore I just gave up and restored my
3 involved servers (Main DC + GC + Exchange 2007) to their initial status...
My questions are:
What is exactly inferred in step 9 ?
How can you successfully replicate Public Folders since I couldn get the
script to work properly?
Is there anything to do regarding certificates for the Exchange 2010 OWA
function or should it be ready ut of the boxcompared to Exchange 2007
where many things had to be done manually thanks to the transition process ?
I came across an article explaining how to issue a new certificate for OWA
but this was a scenario for 2 servers from Exchange 2003 to 2010!
What should exactly be done at the end of the setup?
Were my problems with the missing OWA object in the EMC linked to a missing
step or a bug?

Thanks in advance for your help

3.Upgrading from Exchange 2007 to 2010

I currently run a single Exchange 2007 on WS2003R2..

I would like to upgrade to 2010 mostly for OWA and mobile devices.

All my roles are on the one server.

As I upgrade to WS2008R2 and Exchange 2010, are there any concerns with just
doing an upgrade install?

I would prefer to maintain the same box, rather than build another one.

4.Upgrade/Move Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

Is this a complicated procedure? We will load exchange 2010 on a new
server and will need to copy the mailboxes over to the new server. It
doesnt sound too complicated, but Im sure there are numerous complications
that I am not
immediately aware of. Is there an SOP or HowTo ? is this a relatively
simple task(s) or more complex ?

Many thanks

5.Upgrade Exchange 2003 to 2010

Hi, I'm searching a Checklist for upgrade our single EXCH2003SP2 with 30
Mailboxes to EXC2010. My Plan is to Install the new HW, Install EXCH2010,
Configure EXCH2010 for OWA, SMTP incoming and so on.... , Move Mailboxes as
needed (no need of move all at the same time) and then remove the old Server
when all MB are moved. Specially for the last Step, I can't find Checklists.
Any Idea ?
