In a bar graph where all of the data series are of comparable magnitude except for one which is off the scale, it is useful to show a "break" in the off-the-chart bar so that you can adjust the Y axis scale to fit the other series more appropriately. I'm trying to find out whether it's possible to show this "break" in Excel. Grateful for any insights.
• 4. Graph look up
I have created a graph in excel with some standard values plotting A against B. Now I am doing experiments and have readings for A, which I want to type into a spreasheet and have Excel look up the corresponding value of B. Is this possible? If so, how please? -- Wendy

### How to add asterisk to source data

```We want to add an asterisk to several numbers in our data source, but when we
add the asterisk to the source data, it disappears from the chart.  How can
we keep it from doing that without putting the asterisk in a textbox and then
moving it around all the time whenever there are changes in the chart?
### Re: How to add asterisk to source data
```If you put an asterix into a cell, you convert the cell from a number to a
text value, and it is interpreted as zero. Are the numbers data labels on
points? You could highlight the particular values in a number of ways. You
could put them into a different series with differently colored markers. You
could put them into a different series with differently formatted text. etc.

Create a custom number format like one of these:

General"*"
0.00"*"

Whatever suits you. It should be just the format you're using already
with "*" added on the end. Apply the format you created whenever you
want to add an asterisk to a number, and the result will be a number
that displays properly on your chart, but displays with an asterisk on

```The numbers are data labels on points and the asterisk would highlight
certain numbers and then have a footnote related to the asterisk.  Thank you
anyway though.  I appreciate your help.  feather52
```I can't get Excel to accept more than 19 data points for my X-axis in a

add the 20th point, all of the other points are lost.)

```I am developing a series of charts that will have data added to them on a
monthly basis.  Specifically, I would like the data source to add one column
of data every month.  Currently, all I could come up with was highlighting a
bunch of empty fields and letting the data catch-up.  The problem with that
is: it leaves a big blank space in the chart.
Any ideas?
