I am using office 2007 and I am having trouble creating a chart. I had to create a spreadsheet for a class project that shows the features and cost differences of 3 different computers. Why plot area does not expand after clearing series legend?

Postby joeu2004 » Mon, 25 Jul 2005 06:37:14 GMT

Normally, when I create a chart and clear the series
legend, the plot area expands to the right to fill the
space.

This time, it does not.

How can I get the plot area to fill the chart area?

I have tried reinstituting te series legend and clearing
it again, to no avail.

I am using Office Excel 2003 (11.6355.6360) SP1.

Just select the plot area with your mouse and drag the edge to fit the chart
area.

That said, I don't know why it's not resizing on its own.

Once you've manually edited the size of one of a chart's elements, it no longer
resizes interactively when you make other changes. This is why resizing a chart
element can help prevent Excel from changing its size when it's printed or when the
file is later reopened.

Makes sense. I have no recollection of __purposely__ making any
manual changes -- that is, none that I have never done before without
getting the chart into a mode where Excel would not auto-resize the
plot area. But that certainly does not rule an accidental change,
which after all is oh-so easy to do, especially with my laptop.

I was going to ask you how to tell Excel to take back default control
of the object -- at least, resize the plot area automatically again.

But after I made the manual change that "Echo" suggested, the plot
area now tracks the chart area when I change the latter.

Go figure!

2.Legend overlaps the plot data area in Excel 2007

I converted one of my old Excel 2003 sheets to an Excel 2007 workbook. Some
of the charts in the converted workbook don't seem to be working properly now
though... The main problem is when I go into the "Format Legend" menu and
choose for the legend to be on the Right, it overlaps the plot data area.
Even if I choose "Show the legend without overlapping the chart", nothing
happens. Is this a bug, or do I just have some formatting messed up?

Any idea on how I can get the size of the plot data section to auto-update
based on the size of the legend, similar to how Excel 2003 does?

Dave

3.Can't get transparent OWC Chart Plot Area and Legend Interior on Visual Basic Form

I have set the Chart Area on an embedded OWC11 chart on a Visual Basic
2005 form to a picture file and now want to make the plot and legend
areas transparent so the chart background image shows through. From
Excel VB this works easily by setting:

     ActiveChart.PlotArea.Interior.ColorIndex = xlNone
     ActiveChart.Legend.Interior.ColorIndex = xlNone

However I can't get this to work with a Visual Basic 2005 form. There
is no ColorIndex property. I have tried the following:

ChartSpace1.Charts(0).PlotArea.Interior.SetSolid(OWC.XlConstants.xlNone)
     ChartSpace1.Charts(0).Legend.Interior.Color =
                        OWC.XlConstants.xlNone

I do not get an error, but the background is still opaque and its
color turns to a pale blue. I have also found that when a series plot
line color is set to xlNone so that only Markers are show that the
line is still drawn in the same pale blue color.

I have also tries setting the color to the system color
"Color.Transparent" but this causes a run time error.

What is the correct way to make plot lines and chart/plot/legend
interior areas transparent?

Thanks,

Jeff C.

5.Hiding a non-plotted chart series in legend

Hi,

I have 12 chart series in a chart (Excel 2000), any or all of which ca
be hidden by the user using a Forms control (the cell values becom
=NA() when the form control is FALSE). All works nicely except th
legend shows all 12 series all the time. What's the best way of havin
the legend reveal only the visible series? Is there a way of doing i
without VBA?

One thought I had was to make the appropriate chart series name value
resolve to "". This would hide the series label, but not the line,
guess.

Thanks for any thoughts
