Missing Web Links in OE6

  • 1. Recovering WAB and OE Messages
To begin with I stupidly reinstalled my OS (Windows XP Home - SP1) without first backing up my address book or OE message folders. Now I'm paying the price. The thing is though is that the files are sitting right there. The new installation simply creates a new user, while all the files, documents, etc. for the old user are still intact; so that I can navigate to both the previous user's WAB file and the new user's WAB file and simply exchange them (rename - copy&paste - rename again). But even after doing this, the newly installed OE will still not allow me access to the old WAB file.(Specifically, when I try to open Address Book in Oulook Express, I get an error message that tells me that OE is not functioning properly and needs to be reinstalled - Then when I switch the address book files back to their correct locations, everything works just fine.......with one small exception - All my phone numbers and addresses are Gone Gone Gone!!!) I f anyone out there has any experience with this situation, please don't hesitate to offer a helping hand. Larry

What might cause the email icon from not appearing in the systray when new mail is received?

You may want to try re-registering a few of IE's dlls (as OE uses those
dll's for the hyperlink functions). It has fixed the problem for others in
the past.

Follow these instructions
1. Open IE/Tools/Options./Program tab/Click 'Reset web settings' button,
then close IE
2. Goto Start/Run/type regsvr32 urlmon.dll
3. Reboot

Thanks Gary. I've now tried that but it doesn't fix the problem.

Mike,
Are you actually saying that "web content" does not appear in your mail?
If this is the case, you need to change to read in HTML.
Tools>options>read>uncheck "read all messages in plain text".

Kath

That's brilliant. It works. Thanks very much.

So simple, yet...................

Feel a bit silly really. Haven't quite got my head around plain text / HTML.
Do I want to be sending mail / news in plain text or HTML ?

Regards.

Mike

Mike,
You are welcome and glad all is now well. Sometimes it's just a matter
of trying to guage people's way of describing a particular problem and
wording, and hitting the right button!

It is generally accepted that it is far better to use plain text at all
times (as I do) and generally a definite *must* for newsgroups, unless
specifically geared towards HTML as it would be in a "stationery"
newsgroup. Less likelihood of virus infection, less bandwidth - for
everybody, etc.
You could download this useful utility which will place a button on your
toolbar (among other useful things) that will let you switch between
plain text and HTML instantly. Written by an MVP who helps in this NG,
Steve Cochran, who at this present moment might appreciate a small
donation if you find it useful.

2.OE6 - Web links no longer work

I have Win98SE with IE6, NAV 2002, Outpost Firewall, Ad-aware, Spybot and
Spyblaster,

As of yesterday, in respect of emails received, in OE6 the web links no
longer work.

Clicking on them brings up an OE window, with the toolbars at
the top, but nothing at all below, just a white empty space, through which
you can see the window below. Right clicking on the links produces only '
copy shortcut' - 'save target as' 'select all' - 'add to
favourites'. So clearly they are not working as links.

Any ideas what is causing this - cures - suggestions??

4.OE6 Won't Connec5t to an E-Mail Web Link

Hi,
I am running the latest OE6 ssoftware on a Windows 2000 baed machine. When
I receive an e-mail that has a valid web address included in it, I click on
the link and it will NOT connect me to the site. I have sent this message to
someone else who does get the website up when they click on the LINK. I can
COPY the link or save it as a favorite and it will work just fine.

Does anyone have any idea how to correct this situation???
