Postby "x@y" » Fri, 21 Oct 2005 11:45:24 GMT

I am using Windows XP, with OE 6 & IE.

In the Sent Items I have an e-mail with a: 1 .img (37.3 KB) Attachment
I cannot open, when I click to open a Window pops up with the
following Message:

"This File does not have a Program associated with It for performing
this action. Create an Association in the folder Options Control Panel"

This is new to me I never run into similar situation before,

Could anyone Please describe how to create an Association in the
folder Options Control Panel ?

Thanks in Advance, x@y

Go to www.irfanview.com and download Irfanview, it is a free image editor
among many other functions, contains no spyware and I've used it for years.
Go with the default options for file associations (Images Only) and it will
always be handy for this type of file.

To create a file association with the folder options you need to have a
program installed that can handle .img files and so first you have to know
which program to use. If that file association isn;t there already
(installed by the appropriate program) it's likely you'll have to install
something anyway.

You could try right clicking on the file and select "Open with" from the
context menu if it appears and when you get a choice or choose a program
yourself click the "Always use this program to open this type of file"
checkbox - which is the same as going the folder options route, but I reckon
you'll find irfanview useful anyway.

Hello Jim,

I have tried the following instructions from your Link below to create
a file association, when right clicking on the file I did not get the options:

"Use the Web service to find the appropriate program"
"Select the program from a list"

All I got the options to: Open and Delete.

Then I entered the file extension "IMG" into the extension Folder,
still no go, same pop up Window with the message to create a file
association. After a few tries I decided to try "Irfanview" A suggestion
from Charlie Tame, and It worked ok I was able to open the file.
I have bookmarked Your Link for future use.

Thank You very much for Your dedicated help, x@y

How to create file associations for unassociated file types
You may want to create a file association for a file type that is not associated with a program in
your computer. There are two common reasons for this action: A program such as a database produces
file reports with extensions that are not registered in Windows XP.
You receive e-mail message attachments that are created in a program that is not installed
on your computer, but there is an installed program that can read these files.
To create file association: 1. Right-click a file with the extension that you want to change, and
then click Open, or double-click the file.
      2. Windows XP displays a dialog box that indicates that no program is associated with this
file. The dialog box offers two choices for creating an association: Use the Web service to find
the appropriate program
Select the program from a list
Unless you want to find and download software that opens this file type, the best choice is to
select the program from a list.

      3. Windows displays a dialog box that displays programs that are installed on the computer. If
the program that you want to use for this file type is not listed, click Browse to locate the
appropriate software. Select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check
box.

Hello Charlie,

I have downloaded and installed "Irfanview" I was able to
open the File, when I click open a window pops up with a
message:

Warning!
The File C:\ Documents................\ 1.img is a JPG file with incorrect
extension!

Rename? "Yes" "No".

I click "Yes and it will open.

But when I try to open again still asks me to rename It.
It seems that it is not renaming the file, not to worry the renaming
feature is not critical. All I have to do now is familiarize myself
with the settings and the use of the Program.

Thank You very much for Your Dedicated Help, x@y

Not sure quite how Irfanview deals with that, perhaps it simply saved a copy
called 1.jpg somewhere, the author has been quite careful not to do anything
to cause losses :) That's why I'm always happy to suggest it.

It is also handy for doing screen captures and stuff because as soon as you
get the image you can crop and edit...

Hello Charlie,

I agree Irfanview is a very handy Program, on the next
occasion I am going to try the crop & edit features.

Thank You for recommending Irfanview,

Good morning,

I found a pre-built script that is just what I need...except it doesn't work

The script is at the end of this email and is used to modify Dynamic DNS

and snipped out some of my comments at the beginning of the file):

"SWbemObject: Invalid method"

Any suggestions on how to get this to work with W2K?
