Opening Outlook Express opens TV card audio stream
by HiDefNZ » Wed, 19 Oct 2005 12:24:43 GMT
I have a weird problem. I have a Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP Expert TV Card
and If I open a TV viewing app, like K!TV or Winfast PVR, after closing it,
if I then open Outlook Express 6, the audio stream from the card suddenly
opens up! I have the card connected to the AUX IN socket of my Gigabyte
GA-8IK1100 motherboard.
I have the latest audio driver from Realtek for my AC97 audio, the latest
driver for my TV Card and Windows XP SP1. How could Outlook Express stream
audio from AUX IN?!?

That's a weird one. Check what other programs are running in the background
and at startup and disable as many as you can to see if one of them is
interfering.
Also make sure no antivirus is set to scan email and no anti-spam software
is installed.

I tried disabling all programs, including Avast Antivirus, leaving only
system and local services programs running. I opened my PVR software, closed
it then went to Outlook Express and still had audio from the TV card
suddenly come on. I've tried half a dozen or so forums asking this question,
and no one seems to know whats causing this. I'm hoping that I won't need a
new TV card :-(

Tools>options>uncheck "Play sound when new message arrives"
See if that stops it happening.
If so OE must be turning the .WAV setting up in your sound settings.
If this works I shall award myself this weeks "Lateral thinking" prize :)

arn. oh well, so much for my award.
A question, sorry if you answered it already.
If you restart and don't use the TV card does this still happen with OE or
is it only after you have already used the card? Do you use HTML for email
or just plain text. I am thinking about the IE bgsound command but then I
should think you'd have similar troubles with IE. Hard to tell.
From what I know (which may not be a lot) Windows uses numerous methods to
make sounds, directsound for example, and the only thing I can think of is
that OE uses something related and opens it up again.

t happens only after I have used the TV card. If I open OE before watching
some TV, I don't get any sound coming from the card. I'm guessing that the
WDM drivers for the TV card stay activated after watching TV, and OE
conflicts with them or something. As far as I know, I just use plain text in
emails. I don't know much about some of OE's advanced features. Also, if I
mute "Line In" in the audio control panel, the sound goes from the TV card
but nothing else... so it's kind of like a patch up job but doesn't fix the
problem properly.

h, I wonder if this could be anything to do with MSN messenger trying to
use a microphone or something for sound.
I mean you must have line in enabled in the "Playback" options on your sound
control panel to watch TV, but what about selecting the recording controls
and muting that? Maybe messenger is active when minimized and is re-routing
your input sounds to the output as is may do when using sounds within
messenger? Do you use that and is there any mute option in the messenger? I
hate the darned thing so I don;t know the answers to that :)

ell, sorry, I can't think of anything else where OE should even consider
interacting with sound controls.
FWIW I recently did some programming in an effort to set up a machine that
could play music and make announcements at various levels for different
times of day. Probably been done somewhere at some cost but it wasn't
anything we would want to purchase. It also had to be fairly foolproof so
that meant avoiding normal players where someone could simply walk by and
push the volume up etc, just to avoid accidents.
In the end I used WMP9 but was amazed to discover that in the various
evolutions of Windows and the players there are many differences in the
level of control given in the APIs. What you could do with one version had
gone from the next but something else was added etc. This does not even
consider the actual "Windows" controls which are yet another possible
problem for "Tampering".
It seems likely that OE or something associated with IE is affecting a
control somewhere, but which one and where who knows.
Does the TV card have a TV out function that can be used while the PC is
running (Obviously would have to be on) but not actually viewing the
picture. This would kinda suggest that the picture and sound are always
there but just not being seen and heard by Windows, perhaps something
unexpected is happening with the drivers for one of the cards (TV or sound)
that is more of a driver error than anything else?

t doesn't have a TV out function. Something I might try is if I can find
some older drivers for it. Maybe there is a bug in the current version that
causes this problem? It really does sound like the drivers are the core
problem.

orry nobody had a quick fix but of course it's hard to duplicate problems
like that and even if you can there's no telling how long it will take to
dig out the answer :)

hanks for all the help though :-) I downloaded some drivers from July last
year which resolved the problem!!! So that proves that Leadtek needs to do
some work on their newest drivers.
