  • 1. Business Contacts folder is unable to display after removing File
I'm using Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 with Business Contact Manager. In table view, I removed the "File As" column. Now the following message appears when I click on Business Contacts. "Unable to display the folder. ORDER BY items must appear in the select list if SELECT DISTINCT is specified." On the Menu bar, the View dropdown doesn't give me the option of "Arrange by" to correct the field list. Originally, I was just trying to make room on the screen to see Home and Business Addresses.

I too have gotten the same message. I'm getting screwed though, I had all my
business contancts stored in Outlook BCM, now I can't see them, access
them...

This is the only place I've found the error message listed.

HELP - I need my information BACK!!

Same for me, but do you think anyone at MSFT or any of their so called
experts give a crap. My question has been on the board for 21 days before
you said you were in the same boat. Wish there were a way to get tech
support.

Thanks for writing Tom,
Missery likes company and Bill Gates likes our $$. I did find a post on a
Google group but no response there either.

Is there any way to find the file that contains the information - and
recover the contacts from the file?

I'm in a real bind. We just started a new business and all our contacts
were in there. This REALLY sucks

I don't know of a way. Maybe we could get some attention if both of us made
the same post 6 times in a row and maybe in different places. I got one
Mbaruk or Hussein that responded somewhere else to another problem but he was
of no help although he was listed as a MVP. So as a plan I will relist the
message 6 times in three different forums and why don't you do the same.
Maybe we can shame someone into answering us. I will include your question
about locating the file, because I am in exactly the same boat. BTW I have
used ACT in the past. It has worked well, but of course Vista has blown that
up. Also, for a very short time used sales junction.com. I like the idea of
having it on line but wish they had a computer based program where I could
make notes when offline and then it would upload it.

Okay dokay. I have posted my version 6 times and in different places. A
couple I did it twice but changed the heading. Here is my version, so if you
need something else put it in. I will let you know if I get any answers.

I have the trial and now have lost all my BCM data. I was getting the
following until I deleted the BCM portion that was being loaded.

Outlook 2007 trial small business. On start up I get three error messages
that data entered in the beta cannot be opened in the contact mgr. So I say
ok to all and Outlook opens. When I click on the business contact mgr folder
under all mail items I get the above error message.

Help?

How do I get all my data back?

I also can't get anyone to respond so I am putting this everywhere!

Well here is the ass that responded and take a look the second ass named
Luther.

That is a pretty snotty reply. I asked on these forums for days on end how
to solve the problem of getting Outlook to load without all the error
messages and NONE OF YOU mvps REPLIED. So you might step down from your high
horse and tell me how to restore.

BTW I am not the only one with this problem and I would like to pass on an
appropriate answer to them since he is also getting no replies.

If it is too much to ask to have a civil reply then just don't bother.

I got nothing but a couple of egos responding. From what I have learned our
messages are seen, but they have chosen to blow off any answers for the last
21 days. They keep saying to contact support, but last time I did I was told
there is no support for the trial and/or I had to pay $200+ just to talk to
someone.

Surely there is a competitive product.

Which version of BCM were you using? Was it 2007 Beta 1? Please provide as
many details as you can to help me solve this issue.

Thanks!

You can certainly get your contact data back. We're here to assist you.

BCM contact data is stored in a local SQL Server database. You can normally
find the SQL .mdf and .ldf files in the following location:

Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager

Windows Vista
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager

You can backup these files to ensure that your contact information is safe.
Let's try to understand your BCM configuration so we can get that working.
If that does not work for some reason, there are other ways to export the
data from the SQL database.

Hopefully you are following this. This guy Clinton Ford has jumped in and it
looks like your data can be saved. Get in a message to him so that he has
your particular situation. I still think mine is gone, but I didn't have
much to lose. I feel much better about the potential that you will get
access to all your data, and maybe me too. If so I will bury Act!.

I was running whatever the latest beta version. It has been over a month
ago, but if I remember there was a second release and I had to go in and load
a second bcm. Not sure about that. It was eons ago and pre Vista which has
occupied my thoughts, none bad. It seems to work well, if not a little
slowly with the trial. Seems like excel and word have to wait a lot.

So it was whatever was the last update in Beta. I remember I was having
some problems and ?someone? sent me a post where I had to go in and remove a
bunch of Regedit stuff. I am sure that while I was trying to follow that
email or post as closely as possible that I probably missed deleting
something but did manage to delete the uninstall for BCM beta.

Does this help?

And thank you so much for your help!

Tom
