I'm having a unique problem with Outlook 2003 running Windows XP Home edition. I have it set to automatically send and receive e-mail every hour. Outlook will work for hours or days, running automatically just fine. Then, for some unknown reason, it will stop sending and receiving completely, including trying to do a send/receive manually. I've tried shutting down Outlook 2003 and running it again... doesn't solve the problem. The only thing that solves the problem is re-booting the computer. I've tried creating a new personality and pst file, but the same thing happens. Has anyone seen or experienced somthing like this... any suggestions of what I can do to solve this problem and have it work properly? Thanks for any help!
  • 3. outlook is for pop email
When I try to use Outlook on my WinXP Pro machine running office 2003 to get my email or send email, I get this message whenever I click on send/receive: The Operation Failed. Object could not be found. Been trying to solve the problem. Using MS knowledgebase article #312354 that addresses the problem was of no help at all. Did as instructed in the article, but I keep bouncing out saying my user name or password is not correct, but they are correct. Came across this statement from the microsoft.public.outlook newsgroup while trying to find the answer to my problem, and I am wondering if what Mary is addressing here is my problem: Mary wrote .... Outlook is for POP mail, not web mail. Am I trying to get pop mail from a web mail site? It is a company run site, and my email address is XXXX@XXXXX.COM - does the fact that I need to use what seems to be a web url address indicate that it is web mail? If that is my problem I can't do anything about it I guess, but then I have another question. I am wanting to use Outlook 2003 because I use macros to gather my attachments (on hundreds of emails). Will those macros work in Outlook Express 6? As it is now, I gather my email using Outlook Express 6, then export messages to Outlook 2003 so I can use my macros. Not a killer big deal but would be nice if I could use a more direct method. Anyway, thanks for your time and consideration of my problem and any light you can shed on it. Joanne

Could it be that OE only accepts up to Eudora 3, which is quite old now (current is 6.2 I think)?

Outlook 2002 Send and Receive Operation Failed

Postby David Frid » Mon, 03 Nov 2003 02:36:35 GMT

I have OL2002, and when I press send/receive, I get the
message "operation failed" and all I can to is close the
little popup window. There is no other error message.
Please help.

What types of accounts do you have installed? If you Test Account Settings,
what is the report on the errors tab? Does your ISP require that you
authenticate before sending? If you remove and reinstall your mail
account(s), does the message still appear? What Microsoft Knowledge Base
Articles have you already researched and tried?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to the
Swen virus, all e-mails sent to my actual account will be deleted w/out
reading.

I rebooted and it works fine--I guess I should have tried
this first, maybe I have put too much faith in XP
thanks

I have the same error as David and this is what happens
with me: When I test the account settings, no errors are
shown, the ISP doesn't require authentication before
sending, I have removed and reinstalled outlook and the
mail account and the message still appears. I looked
through the knowledge base but found none that suited this
specific problem. The OS is windows 2000.

I couldn’t find the answer to David’s problem so I posted
this response.

Thanks

The only other thing I can think of to try is to exit Outlook, delete the
file "outcmd.dat", and restart Outlook. You can find the file in your
"\Documents and Settings\<your logon name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook" directory. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped...

1.Outlook 2002 - Send/Receive "The operation failed"?

Just got Outlook 2002 as an included program with my HP iPaq 2215.

I've set it up and used it frequently. But for the second time now, it is
refusing to do anything when you hit "Send/Receive". It pops up a rather
cryptic one line error message "The operation failed.". I can't figure out
how to clear this out and how to actually get it to work...the last time, I
reinstalled Outlook off of the HP CD. It worked fine, up until now.

I have followed an article in the MS Knowledge Base that deals with this,
and deleted and added a new profile, but it doesn't seem to work. And I
have no idea why...

2.Send/receive, operation failed message outlook 2002

Hi, I am receiving a message stating operation failed,
with my 0utlook 2002 pro. When I go to tools,
send/receive, and click on my account, I can send and
recieve, but I cannot do it from clicking on the
send/receive on the toolbar, and the auto send/receive
does not work.

My email settings are set up correctly, as I can receive
my test emails. I tried repairing and
uninstall/reinstalling outlook, but it did not fix it.

Thanks!

3.Outlook 2002 "The operation Failed" when clicking Send/Receive

I have Outlook 2002, when I click SEND/RECEIVE, I get the error message "The
Operation Failed". No error numbers are listed, that is the exact and
complete message. I have looked on the Microsoft website and nothing there
was helpful. I tried deleting the email account and adding it, I also
uninstalled Outlook and reinstalled it. I can 'Test' my account settings
and it passes, but I never receive the test email. I can compose an email
and click 'Send' and that works fine. It is not an ISP problem as Outlook
Express works fine.

So I can send email, but cannot receive it.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Doug

4.Outlook 2002 SP2 "operation failed" send receive

Outlook 2002 SP2 with Windows XP Professional worked for
years - no problem - now on 2 occasions
cannot "send/receive" -- popup box says "operation
failed" no other message and no helpful articles on
Microsoft knowledge base site (except to create a new
profile which does not work since other files are not
transerred over so it is like starting with a blank page -
- not acceptable!). Basically, the send receive settings
are inoperable -- when I go to check send receive groups
nothing comes up. I can test email settings and they
work fine. I am very annoyed since I have maintained
files in Outlook folders for years and like the central
location for calendar, files, notes, etc. I teach online
so this is an urgent problem that needs to be resolved
once and for all. I have the Outlook Backup software
recommeded as an "add on" by Microsoft and also use
Norton Systemworks and Norton Internet Security.

5."Operation Failed" in Outlook 2002 on Send/Receive

Our company has 30+ machines still running Office XP (the other 150 or so
are running various newer versions, and do not exhibit this behaviour), and
about half of them started displaying the "Operation Failed" dialog box
whenever a Send/Receive is initiated. This does NOT apply to the initial
Send/Receive operation that occurs when Outlook starts.

The machines running Outlook XP that do NOT have this issue are the ones
upon which, a few weeks ago, our technician turned off automatic updates,
and forgot to re-enable them, so I'm fairly certain it's one of the myriad
updates released in the last three weeks causing the problem... any clue as
to which one this may be? - TIA
