why does outlook open when i try to open a different program?

i have a piece of software for a logic class and in the software are exercise 
problems to complete. every time i try to open an exercise problem to do my 
homework outlook opens instead and opens a box that says it is going to 
import info. to my email account that has a yes or no box to click. clicking 
either box opens up outlook and my exercise problems never open. what is 
going on?

it is not one single exercise that this is happening to. it is every exercise 
in the program...i double clicked on them all to see if it was just one or 
all of them. the one i need to do for my homework is titled the following: 
Identity1.prf
does that help you?

Are you opening the exercises with the program designed to open them? If you 
double click on a prf file Windows may think it's something else...like a 
preference file.

i don't know...the software is called LPL and it is downloaded onto my 
desktop from a cdrom. i open the LPL desktop shortcut and then the exercise 
shortcut folder containing the exercise files is in that box with four of the 
software programs. i put the cd in and tried to open the exercises off of the 
cd, but outlook still opened up. also the other programs are working fine.

LPL the logic stuff...hmm.

I think you're gonna need to install Sun's java engine too. You better read 
the instructions before clicking anymore buttons...sorry to say. Check the 
CD to see if java is on it ...they may have given you everything y ou need 
except good instructions. I went through this with my son's calculus krap, 
not only did the college not give correct instructions but the CD included a 
FREE virus...go figure.

Double check that thats the right software I found the pdf for..I just took 
a google shot and it sounded like what you're talking about.

i went to the software website: www-csli.stanford.edu/LPL 
it says that the exercises i want to open are in an application called 
Fitch, which is primarily written in Java, but also is heavily dependent on 
platform-specific code. i don't know what that means...maybe you do.

i sent a bug report to the website and they had a download for me of updated 
software. and guess what? it worked! thank you for your help.

Outlook is associated with the prf file type - it's uses files with that 
extension to create new profiles. Can you open the file from the 
application's File, Open menu instead?

By default, a ".prf" file is used to define an Outlook mail profile.  Open 
your Folder Options Control Panel applet and change the file type 
association for PRF files to open with your learning application or 
reinstall the application so that it reassociates with the prf file type.
