H I have several cross-references in a document (made as Insert|Cross-reference|heading) Suddenly, when I click to this reference, it doesn't jump to it as it usually did, but shows me a directory where the document is located What happened Thank Greg
  • 2. normal.dot always appears on close
I have 2002 SP2 and even if I remove my normal.dot and let Word create a bare bones new one, I always see (just for a moment or two) a normal.dot sheet after closing a document. I'm not asked whether I want to save it, it just appears and then it closes by itself. I don't have "prompt to save Normal templatet" ticked either. And "normal.dot is" is always the first item in the list of last used documents under "File". Is this "normal"? Rob

What I want to know is how you can possibly *not* have the My Computer
icon in your places bar. Not only is it there by default, but you
can't get rid of it by deleting its key from the registry, which is
(for Office 2003)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open
Find\Places\StandardPlaces\MyComputer

As soon as you reopen the dialog, the key is automatically restored.

In any event, there is no path, UNC or otherwise, for My Computer.
It's an artificial construct created by the Windows component
Shell32.dll.

Possibly it has been moved down below the visible area? Or, if My Computer
has been renamed, would it show up under the new name?

Thanks for both responses - no, it has not been moved and it is not there.
I'm running Word 2000 (if that makes a difference). But the only things I
have listed are:
Desktop, Favorites, MyDocuments, Publishing (My Network), and Recent. I've
got no need for the Publishing one since I don't network with any computers -
I do, however want to add My Computer so I have easy access to my USB jump
drive when I plug it in.

Any suggestions for how I can add My Computer to the list of places?

Thanks!!
Geoff

finally went and had a look at Word 2000. The "My Computer" icon
isn't available (confirmed by the list in the KB article). I couldn't
find any way to add it.

You might be able to add an icon for the jump drive itself while it's
plugged in, and it should stay in the places bar. That assumes it
always has the same drive letter (mine doesn't always).

don't have Word 2000 to check, but if you refer to my web page
http://www.gmayor.com/customize_the_word_places_bar.htm, you will find
amongst the registry items under Places - StandardPlaces and
UseDefinedPlaces.
Try creating a key under StandardPlaces called MyComputer (no space).
This appears the only difference between 2000 and 2003 in this respect.
Let me know if it works and I'll add a note to the web page.

i Graham,

No, it doesn't work. The software simply ignores the extra registry
key.

Geoff, there is a one-extra-double-click solution -- click the Desktop
icon in the places bar, then double-click the My Computer icon in the
file/folder list. Or upgrade to a version of Office that's still
supported by MS...

To edit places bar, you can use Tweak UI from Mircrosoft, or Lightning
Bar on http://www.**--****.com/
