  • 1. NTFS Permissions Conundrum
We have a shared folder that we want to allow users to create, but not move or delete files from. We've set permissions appropriately, and everything works fine except for .tmp files. When a user opens a Word document, a .tmp file gets created. When they close the document, the .tmp file cannot be deleted and the folder fills up with these .tmp files. Any way around this? -- Patrick XXXX@XXXXX.COM (remove x)

Problem Description: We have a user on XP Pro, all updates and patches applied. Using Office 97. A person sent a document that is password protected. She chooses the Read Only button and the document won't open. She has full control of her "My Documents" folder where the file is located. She is a Power User on her machine. I can't reproduce the problem at this time on another XP machine, so I am thinking it is a permission issue. Thoughts? Thank you
  • 4. File size differences when working with Word 97 vs Word 2002
The PC in my office has Word 2002. My laptop at home has Word 97. Sometimes I take work home by saving a document to a floppy disk and copying it to the hard drive of my laptop. I make my edits from the hard drive of my laptop, and then save it to the floppy disk, which I then take to work and copy to the hard drive of my PC. My question is "Why does the size of my document (any document, whether containing many tables or graphics) significantly reduced when I save my edits in Word 97 on the laptop (having created the document in Word 2002) and significantly increased when I return the document to the hard drive of my PC, continue my edits, and save it in Word 2002? A 30-page document with many tables, created in 2002, for example, was 500KB until saved in 97, at which time it was reduced to 260KB (although I had added about 10 pages when editing in 97). When I returned the 97 document to Word 2002 and did some edits to the now 40-page document, file size increased from 260KB to 728KB. I have followed the usual tips you give for restraining file size (such as turning off fast saves and embedded True Type). Naturally, I need a "slim" document if I have to pass the document via floppy between 2002 and 97 in order to complete it. Thank you.
  • 5. Changes to Normal.dot
Nothing I have read in replies to the question about the Normal.dot asking for changes to be saved seems to apply to me. I have no add-ins, COM or otherwise. I am on Word 97 on a laptop that has Windows XP loaded and work on a networked server. This same problem affects many of my colleagues. The problem happens completely randomly and results in untold numbers of unnecessary blank documents being created as we use mailmerge widely Any other suggestions Chrissie, Eastbourne, UK

3.Hmmm... Keystroke ceases to be

So I finally managed to get back to English (US) as my default, and
reconstruct my Toolbar just the way I want it.

Only now I discover the keystrokes I used to navigate to the top or the
bottom of a document no longer work.

I don't know what they're called on an English physical keyboard (I Use
a FRench Canadian one), but I'm pretty sure the bottom of the document
key is called "End." (It's "Fin"on mine).

It's not a huge deal, but I am in the habit of using those two keys --
and they still work in other apps.

I looked under Customize Keyboard, but couldn't see an obvious command
for Go To Beginning of Document or Go To End of Document.

All input welcome. TIA.
