Find function in Word does not work when searching double spac

In Windows XP, when I try to find double spaces using the "Find" function so 
that I can replace them with a single space, it does not work. The "Find" 
function also does not work when performing searches for words. This function 
worked well in Windows 2000. Does anyone have a solution to this? - Thanks!!

I have fiddled with this a bit and still cannot get word 2003 to find
words, doe not even find words that have been copied and [pasted into
the search dialogue box.I use the search function quite a lot and
never have till this happened ever changed the defaults. though doing
so does not help.

Since installing Office 2007 a few days ago the Windows Search function has 
been unable to find a single document created in Word 2007, no matter where 
the files are located. Is this an Office question/problem or an XP 
question/problem?

Does the formating of a document have any effect on the search?
