  • 1. Mysterious line and extra spaces in footer!
Hi all! I'm working in word 2003 and am having an issue when I add references to the document. On each page I add a reference, the footer section on that page seems to add about 14 blank lines above the footer and a horizontal line (about 5cm long) halfway up the page (just above the blank lines). The blank lines and the horizontal line appear to be in the footer as when I select to 'view footer' the show/hide formatting marks are also highlighted. However! the document will not let me select the blank lines or the horizontal lines to delete them. A bit on the frustrating side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • 2. 'document is being used..'
When i open one of my word documents i created i receive a message which says that the document is being by me and asks, do i want to make a copy? I can click cancel and it will disappear. My password protected documents will also ask for my password again once the document is opened, again cancel will to make it disappear. Why does it happen and how i can i stop it from doing it?

  • 4. How do I set up tabs for fill-in blanks on forms?
I am creating standard written reports with blanks to fill in. How do set up tabbing so that I can tab from one blank to the next one? For example, "This report is written for ______________ on the following property, ______________" This form is for me to fill in, not anyone else. Would I need to create a Merge form??? Thanks.
  • 5. "How do you number a document in one section and not the other?"
I am trying to number section 2 in my word document, but the numbers also appear in section 1. What do I need to do to stop Word from numbering in section 1?

squashing text to left margin

Postby c3R1cDg4 » Thu, 27 Oct 2005 08:05:03 GMT

Have a user that when they print or make a change to a document the font all
piles on top of eachother on the left side of the document.

Is this a print driver issue or word issue ? Or something else.

It's a printer driver issue. The cause is not entirely known, but changing
the printer to another and then back again seems to clear it, at least
temporarily.

I'm having the same issue, but only with labels. But my users have seen this
problem on different PC's, and with different printers selected.

Part of the problem in addressing a firm fix for this 'squished' or 'squashed' text issue

[Not that MS hasn't tried to put out some generic 'try this to fix print problems in Word' articles :)
  http://www.**--****.com/ ;en-us;826845&FR=1
  http://www.**--****.com/ ;en-us;826862&FR=1 ]

has been that folks who report seeing it, rarely come back with
any additional information on what worked when it went away :)

It's apparently a glitch that involves Word temp files that causes
Word 2003 to lose track of the printer it's supposed to be
using (as listed in File=>Print) and seems to be related to
add-ins and temp files of Word.

Going to File=>Print and
changing the printer to another one (and back)
will often clear it temporarily,
 *BUT* before doing that
or switching the font **please** let us know what happens if,
when you see the problem on the screen you

 1. Close Word.
 2. Cleanup and delete all left over
Word temp files using Start=>Search and the
      search string of
      ~$*.*;*.tmp

 3. Restart Word and open the same document you were
    working on.

Bob,

Once I see the problem again we will try the following

 1. Close Word.
 2. Cleanup and delete all left over
Word temp files using Start=>Search and the
      search string of
      ~$*.*;*.tmp

 3. Restart Word and open the same document you were
    working on.

If that works do we do this every time we have this issue ? or will this
permatly fix the issue.
Thanks

1.Word 2003 squashing text to left margin

We have two customers who report that , occassionally, Word 2003 will squash
lines of text in a document up against the left margin. The effect is that
all the letters appear to be typed over the top of each other. This not only
displays on the screen but also prints this way. Opening and closing the
document a few times will cause the text to display properly across the page.

Both sites are running Windows XP Pro SP2.

Does anyone have any advice on this please?

Martin

5.Text stacked at left margin

We are using Word 2003

When using third-party software to convert a .doc file into a .tiff file, as
soon as the .tiff printer is selected all the text is stacked at the left
margin. We did not have this problem when we were using Word 2000.
According to web searches this happens with other third-party software, not
just the one we are using. Tech support from the third-party software we are
using indicated it is a glitch in Word 2003 (problem does not occur with Word
2000) and that it is a bug that Microsoft knows about. Will this be fixed
any time soon? Is there any work-around other than closing Word and logging
off? It would be great if Microsoft could incorporate a .tiff converter into
Word, then the third-party software would not be required.
