  • 3. Activate ONLY Outlook from Office 2007 trial?
How to activate only Outlook 2007 after using Office 2007 trial? The activation dialogue box says to delete other components in Add/remove software but there I seem to have the option of deleting all Office (not selected applications). The trial site offers no help that I can find. I thought it would save time to do this online - do I have to go down to a store and buy the disk (and just delete the whole trial office including Outlook?). TIA for any help.. Don

Is it possible to get a 3rd license on an academic version? The reason we need 3...His laptop at school, the desktop at his mom's house (where he lives) and the desktop here (where he stays several days a month). That way he can use any of the three computers, no matter where he is staying. Thank you for any help. -- Donna

When I double click on a Word or Excel file, office 2000 run a small install
and then opens the application, hoever, it does not open the file. If i the
open a file from there it works fine.

Yep, I've got the same problem with a secondary user account. If I
double-click on a file in my account it opens fine without any install
running. I'm the one that installed Office 2000 Pro. The other user gets
that install dialog and eventually word/excel etc. but no file. Once the
program is open loading the file is fine.

I tried increasing the user rights as suggested in Microsoft's Knowledgebase
but that did not work. I tried reinstalling Office under the other user's
account, but that did not fix the problem. I also would liek to know what
is causing this problem.

I was able to fix it by uninstalling office 2000 from Add/remove programs,
deleting the following registry entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0

And then installed office again and everything is fine now.

Apparently Office 2000 has problems when running in multi-user systems.

2.problem opening up Word when double clicking on files to open

I am using Office 2000, with Win 2000 Pro O/S. I
typically open files by double clicking on them in Win
Explorer or on the desktop. I am now having a problem
opening docs in Word, let me explain:

When I double click to open a file created in Word, I get
a grey dialog box with the "X" in the red circle. The
message in the box says "Cannot find the file [filename]
(or one of its components). Make sure the path and
filename are correct and that all required libraries are
available." If I open Word and then open the file from
within Word, no problem.

I can still open other files by the double click method,
eg, Excel, PDF, MP3, WAV, etc.

If Word is already open, however, and I double click to
open a new file, I do not get this error, and it
successfully opens the new file.

Also, if I click on a Word doc e-mail attachment icon in
Outlook, I get a dialog box with exclamation mark in
yellow triangle that says "The system cannot find the file
specified."

This seems like a Win Explorer issue, although it only
happens with Word files. I started having this problem
over the weekend on an installation that is 2 years old,
very robust, and has never seen a problem like this.

Thanks for your help.

3.Double-clicking .xls file opens Excel but doesn't open the file

A user was trying to print a directory list of Excel files not know that the
command would try to open each file and print it. He cancelled the job
through Task Manager. Now when he tries to open an Excel file (.xls) by
double-clicking on it, the Excel application opens but the file does not.
File can be opened by clicking on "File", "Open" and selecting the file. Why
won't it open when double-clicking? Thanks.

4.Problem opening Excel by double clicking on a file shortcut

When I double click on a an excel file (which is supposed to open Excel), it
starts to load Excel then I get an 'encountered an error' and has to close
window. I do not get this problem on my other office documents (Word,
PowerPoint). When I send the error report, Excel will then continue to load,
but will not load the file I clicked on (I've tried .xlsx and .xls file
types). If Excel is loaded without a file it loads as it should and then I
can go in and Open->File and it works. Also, if Excel is already open (in
the background) and I navigate via Windows Explorer to an excel file and then
double click on the file, it opens properly. Therefore the error is only
happening when Excel is being started by Windows by opening a file with the
associated file type.

5.Problem when opening a file by double-click

Just upgraded from Office 2003 to 2007. When I try to open an existing Word
or Excel file by double-clicking the file, Word or Excel opens up but the
file doesn't display. As soon as I click on the Button, the file then
displays...but of course, the Button menu opens as well, forcing me to press
Escape to get rid of it. Why doesn't the file just display? I don't seem to
have the issue with PowerPoint, but only Word or Excel. It happens no matter
which version of the app the file was saved in. I don't believe there's a
setting for this kind of thing.
