  • 1. Summary Tasks and Subtasks - Calculating Duration
Hello, I am a new user of Microsoft Project 2003 Professional. I am trying to outlining a multi phase process where the five phases are displayed as summary tasks with each having a number of subsequent subtasks. When entering duration for each subtask, the duration value calculated for the summary task is the highest subtask duration. For example: Duration Summary Task 2 subtask 2 subtask 2 subtask 2 I would be interested in displaying a total duration for the summary task (Phase) based on the time required to complete each subtask. So, using the above example, the Summary Task duration value would be 6. Can this be done? Thank you very much for your time. Cheers, Tim
  • 2. RBS Outline Codes and how to mask them for Re-Use
I get a lot of use out of our RBS codes. In fact, they are a great way of centralizing the organizational structure and we keep finding additional ways to use the info to reduce redundancy. However, when we attempt to use the RBS for additional fields, such as "Developing Department", etc., all of the RBS levels show up in the drop down list. An example is: "MyCompany.DCS.Database.LogicalModeling". In this scenario, "Database" would be level of the RBS that we would be asking our project leaders to select for each project. Since outline codes are "linked" to the shared RBS enterprise outline code, there is no way to monkey with the mask in the "Define Code Mask" dialog box for an Enterprise Code. I've also tried several ways to create a formula in a custom field that points to an RBS code - however, no luck. Can anyone provide a methodology on presenting portions (single levels) of an RBS structure to Project Server users for selection into other fields? Perhaps a formula for selecting a single level of the RBS node - i.e.- ???[Enterprise Project Outline Code30] level=1 ???? Thanks a million! Jim
  • 3. Organizing Project Plans
We have implemented project server 2003. Currently we have 20 Plans. Out of the 20 plans a) 10 plans belongs to 4 divisions (Information Technology, Research, Products, and Field Operations) b) 10 Plans belongs to different product groups (Project Management, Program Management, BPR, Outsourcing, Six Sigma, Analytics, Modeling, RFID, Mobile, and Internal) Is there some way we can group these projects into 2 (folders or Categories or views) so that the project managers will be able to click on the top level and view the projects for that group. in other words, can the project manager view the information in the following format (tree structure similar to Windows Explorer view) 1) Divisional Plans 1a) Information Technology 1b) Research 1c) Products, and 1d)Field Operations 2) Major Products Plans 2a) Project Management 2b) Program Management 2c) BPR 2d) Outsourcing 2e) Six Sigma 2f) Analytics 2g) Modeling 2h) RFID 2i) Mobile 2j)Internal If there is a better way of displaying the same information, please suggest me. Thank you Sunny
  • 4. Updating Custom Enterprise Fields in PWA
Hello All, I have what I think to be a small issue that I would love some help with. Issue: When the name of an Enterprise Custom Field is changed in the Global Template through Project Professional, the name is not delegated to my views in PWA. Initially the name was "Overall Risk to Project" and I wanted it changed to "Risk". Similar issue with four other names. Attempts I have done to solve: 1.) Reboot the machine 2.) Create a new view with these 'new' variable names. When I look at the enterprise custom name in the View Manager I see my new names, but when I look at it through project center I still see the old name What is the cause of this non-propagation? Thanks, in advance, for all your help, Andy
  • 5. Not enough permission to Open own project in Project
Hi Everyone, I've been working on a project plan which other project managers have access to update in Project. At some point, I tried to locate my plan in Project and got the following message: "You do not have sufficient permissions to perform the requested action..." Any ideas? I've already had the administrator assign myself as the owner in project web access, but I can't get this opened to publish. Thanks!

Can't Renumber WBS for "Selected Tasks"

Postby J Baird » Sat, 06 Mar 2004 04:22:47 GMT

I have a schedule, where I've renumbered the WBS numbers for selected tasks,
on a regular basis. ([Project][Wbs][Renumber][Select Tasks])

All of a sudden, in the [WBS Renumber] dialog box, the [Selected Tasks]
option is greyed out (the [Entire Project] option is still selectable).
Nothing else has changed...the WBS settings and Code Definition are still
the same as when the [Selected Tasks] option was available.

To try to fix the problem , I selected [Project][Wbs][Renumber][Entire
Project], to renumber the entire project, hoping that would bring back the
[Selected Tasks] option, but it didn't.

I can't find anything in the knowledge base about this. Has anyone seen
this behavior before, and if so, do you know what caused it?

Hello J.

If you select only one row, the [WBS Renumber] dialog box presents only the
[Entire Project] option.
Have you tried to select several rows ?

Of course...As I said, I've renumbered selected tasks on a regular basis.
Now, the [Selected Tasks] option is greyed out. I know that I'm not the
only person that this has happened to.

1.Renumber WBS for Selected Tasks is broken for one file (it used to work)

I have a schedule where I've frequently renumbered the WBS values for parts
of the schedule, using the [Project][Wbs][Renumber][Select Tasks] command.

All of a sudden, when I select several tasks (not just one!), and click the
[WBS Renumber] dialog box, the [Selected Tasks] option is greyed out (the
[Entire Project] option is still selectable).

Nothing else has changed...the WBS settings and Code Definition are still
the same as when the [Selected Tasks] option was available. When MSP
renumbers the WBS for "Selected Tasks", it uses the first selected item as a
starting reference, and there's a valid WBS value in that task. The numbers
it would normally create with this command, are not already in the Project
file, so uniqueness isn't a problem.

To try to fix the problem , I selected [Project][Wbs][Renumber][Entire
Project], to renumber the entire project, hoping that would bring back the
[Selected Tasks] option, but it didn't.

I can't find anything in the knowledge base about this. I've had several
users complain of the same problem, but not until they have renumbered
selected tasks, a lot of times.

Has anyone seen this behavior before, and if so, do you know how we can get
the Selected Tasks WBS Renumbering to work again?

2.Renumbering WBS using the Project/WBS pull down window

I have MS Project 2003 Standard: I wish to renumber an existing WBS. The Help
instructions say: Select Project, then WBS, then Renumber, then Entire
project. When I select Project, then WBS,the window is locked in the "Define
Code" mode. The Renumber option is muted and cannot be selected. Icannot
proceed.
What am I doing wrong?
How can I renumber an existing WBS?

3.WBS Renumber greyed out

Hi,

I'd like to renumber my WBS elements. When I click Projects, WBS the
renumber menu is in grey and can not be used. This happens even a new
project with only two tasks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

5.How to renumber W.B.S. codes

I have MS Project 2003 Professional. There is an option on the Project menu
for 'W.B.S.' 'Renumber', but the 'Renumber' function is not highlighted and
won't let me select it. According to online help you should be able to
select your tasks by name (or entire project) and renumber the W.B.S. codes
but I cannot get it to work. How can you do this?
