  • 1. Bug with Data Sets!!!
I have created a drawing and copied servers to it from the default network stencil. I then created a data set that I wanted to apply to all the server shapes on the page. So I can show the data I want to see. I had to delete all shape data from the shape, via define shape data, before I can apply the updated data set. If I do not, even with remove exsisting data sets selected, I will get random shape labels in the shape data window. This happened because on one of the labels I have a fixed list and forgot to add a selection. I went into the data set and added the info. I then applied it to all shapes on the page. I then got extra labels. Some are blank spaces, and some say Row_1014, (or some number). I have to delete all the info and reapply the data set to get the proper fields. The updated label is plaecd at the end of the selection after I update it, also it wont put the labels in alphabetic order if I have to add a new one.
  • 2. Background Pages and Automatic Orientation?
Hi All, Not sure if this is possible, but here goes. I am using Visio 2007 Beta, but I presume that most features are still the same. What I am trying to do is create a custom template for drawings for a patent application. I've been able to successfully setup appropriate page and margin sizes, the issue I am having is with automatically inserting background elements. I first tried using Header/Footer but quickly gave up as I realized that I couldn't see them in normal view and also couldn't add any graphical objects (cross hairs for scan points). I then tried using background pages which appeared ideal, except for one major complaint - they don't change orientation automatically. Thus, when I add a new page in landscape format, the background page I created for the portrait formatted page no longer works. Now I know that I can simply create another background page appropriately formatted for landscape pages, but then I have to manually select which one I want whenever I add a page. Is there any way to automate this? Either have a background page that is automatically selected or maybe even a little macro? Thanks in advance.
  • 3. How do you export a Visio Database Model into a new SQL DB?
I have created a Database Model with several tables, columns, etc and I want to export this into a new Database in SQL Server 2005. I do not see any way to do this in the menus. I can see how to reverse engineer and pull stuff from SQL but not pushing into SQL.
  • 4. linking shapes in network diagrams
i'm working on network diagrams - there's a shape that appears in 2, but is the same object - is it possible to link them so that when i modify one, the other is automatically updated, so i don't have to maintain both pages individually? cheers

[Visio 2007 SP1]Transparency not handled when exporting in PNG or GIF ?

Postby Oriane » Wed, 08 Oct 2008 17:25:19 GMT

Hi there,

when I export (Save as) a Visio 2007 diagram as a PNG or GIF image, the
transparent areas become white (and therefore not transparent !) on the
image. The export wizard prompts me for choosing a color for the transparent
areas, and I don't check the checkbox, so I would expect to stay with these
transparent areas...

Best regards

I think this is because of the different meanings that transparency
have in Visio and GIF/PNG files.

In Visio individual shapes (or even just parts of shapes within
grouped shapes) can be transparent, you can also make whole layers
transparent. This allows one shape to be seen through others. The
transparency can also set from 0 to 100%.

With PNG/GIF it's a colour index which can be made transparent, the
transparency doesn't make other parts of the image visible, but any
other image behind.

Hi Paul,

Yes you should be right. However I've misunderstood the "transparency color"
checkbox usage in Visio. If, say, I choose "white" for the color, all the
white pixels will become transparent in the PNG image (and it is not the
other way round). So we can export to PNG with transparent areas.

The PNG transparency works -- just not on white!!! I tried white, came back
as white. Then switched to yellow, Viola!, transparent. Since, white is the
presence of ALL colors :), making it transparent won't work. OK, just
kidding about the reason -- looks like a special "feature".

2.Exporting to GIF or PNG with the Shape.Export method

Hi all,

the help to the Shape.Export method says "The Export method uses the default
preference settings for the specified filter and does not prompt the user for
non-default arguments."

That's quite nice for a straight forward approach to exporting VSDs to GIF
or PNG, but what if I'd like to export them as thumbnails, let's say 30x80
pixels?
How do I set preferences to that export filter programmatically? I'm using
the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Visio namespace in VB.NET.

Thx
Olaf

3.Export PNG and GIF files - resolution = 86

I need to automate export in PNG and GIF format. I know that this is
available using Save As. However, the default resolution is 96 or the last
saved export option. I need to specify resolution = 86.
I know that this is not available in Visio (as far as I know). Is there a
workaround? I have tried to look where the default resolution is saved in the
registry so I can change it there. Or is there another way?

Thanks!

4.Exporting to .jpg .gif .png on Windows Server 2003

Hopefully we have someone who has run into this. If you install Visio 2003 on
Windows Server 2003 the fonts do not appear to be exported with antialias
smoothing like they do on Windows XP.

Is there a way to have the fonts antialias on Windows Server 2003 like they
do on Windows XP?
