  • 1. text disappears when i try to edit it
Hi, I'm running Visio Standard 2002 (with SP2) on Windows XP. When I try editing any text object in my files the text disappears and I have to edit "in the dark" without even seeing what I'm typing. This is on a brand new machine. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Thanks. sd
  • 2. How to add jumps to side-side arrows in Visio?
In order to get extra arrows on my connectors, I've switched to side-side arrows and bottom-top arrows. (I did this because I needed the extra arrowheads and did not want to create extra connectors that get 'lost' in all the rearranging I have to do.) The dynamic connectors jump whenever they cross another connector. The side-side and bottom-top do not and I can not find a place to set that ability.
  • 3. Visio 2003 shapes available for large and small woodworking machi.
I'm looking for Office Visio 2003 shapes for laying out a large cabinet/furniture manufacturing plant. I need shapes to represent large production woodworking machines like double-end tenon machines, single-end tenon machines, moulders, shapers, CNC routers, wide-belt sanders, wood shapers, etc. The plant layout template included with the program only includes metal working machines. Is there anywhere I can find these shapes? None of them seem to be on the Office web site.
  • 4. DWG conversion into VSD problems
I am trying to convert a CAD drawing into Visio 2003 Pro with dismal results. First of all, not all of the Polylines are appearing in the converted drawing. I have futzed with inches, feet, etc to no avail. I have tried all suggestions offered with no results or changes. Second. Once the Conversion wizard stops and after the Room numbers are loaded in from the accompanying spreadsheet, I cannot select any portion of the drawing or the drawing as a whole. Third. When I try to add spaces from the Space/Category view, I get enormous squares with huge text being displayed on the drawing. I have tried matching the names of the room numbers with the name of the space (as outlined from the Troubleshooting a space plan help file) with no change whatsoever. I am going out of my mind. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
  • 5. Collapse layers
How do you collapse layers so tha when you copy and paste a selection of shapes and text that it does not create a new layer with the same name in the page to where you are making the copy. You can paste special and choose the paste as a Microsoft Visio Drawing but that loose the format of the original shape. I vaugely remember a collapse layrs option but that may have been an adobe photoshop option. Thanks Pete Borley

VISIO: how make shapes/stencil window NOT appear on file open? When wxisting
files are opened, the shapes window automatically appears at the left side.
I find no way in Tools, Options to turn that off so that only the document
opens. How?

Try closing all stencils, then close the drawing .vsd
Next time you open the .vsd file the stencils won't open with it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'close all stencils.' I do close all
stencils by closing the entire stencils window (actually window is titled
Shapes)--by cllicking the "x" in the top right corner of it. After doing
that, the drawing covers the whole window, except for the tool bars. I save
it like this, but when next opened, the shapes window is back again.

Interestingly, I have drawing prepared by other people that open without the
shapes window "on" at opening.

These drawings were saved with the Workspace checked.
When you have closed the stencils, try SaveAs and then check that Workspace
is checked in the Save dropdown in the bootom right...

Thanks David for the helpful info.

This works for me:

In Visio Pro 2003:

Open a drawing
Close Shapes window (click "x" or "View" --> "Shapes Window")
Save as new file ("File" --> "Save As...")
Do not save workspace (click arrow on "Save" button --> click to
uncheck "Workspace")
Save and replace the existing file

The Shapes window should not appear the next time you open the file.

Thanks for the lead! Actually, Workspace must be NOT checked for the Shapes
window to not appear on opening! Problem now solved.

1.Same Visio file - Shapes window appears but shapes do not

I've been working on the same Visio file for weeks, renaming it when I'm done
each day. The next day when I re-open it for my day's work, the Shapes
window appears but my Shapes do not. Mildly annoying that I need to
re-select them each morning.

I'm nearly certain the Shapes "stuck" with the file when I first starting
working with it. Is there some switch I turned off by mistake?

4.Ready-made stencils for MS Windows Mobile 5 or MS Windows Mobi

Thanks for replying.
I am looking for stencils to design UI mockups for mobile devices running
Windows Mobile 5 (and later Windows Mobile 6).
We use Visio 2003.

I know the XP stencils in Visio 2003 Professional but they don't seems to be
100% like Windows Mobile 5.

5.Making our add-on appear in the VIsio 2003 File/New/ menu

We have a suite of products that installed in the Visio / Solutions /
FirstSTEP (our product name) and it shows in the Visio 5 / 2000 /
MS2000 File/New/FirstSTEP menu and in the Tools/Add-ons/FirstSTEP
menu.

But I've looked through the documentation and in the newsgroups and
did not find anyway to make them visible.
Maybe I've looked in the wrong place.
I've had the "Visio 2003 developers survival guide" bought but it will
be another 4 weeks before we get it.

Do they have to be placed something special or access some registry
key (I've looked there too and found nothing)?
