  • 1. Can't start or stop services...
    We have a HP Netserver at a customer running Windows 2000 Server SP4+Rollup update. We have did nothing really with the server but for about 2 weeks now the server acting very strangely. We can't start/stop services... We can't enter windows update site (IE just hangs when going to that adress windowsupdate.microsoft.com) We can't uninstall programs from add/remove program When we try to stop/start services it try for a bit to start and then it says 'could not start the service in a timely fashion'. For example I've tried to stop MESSENGER service, Backup Exec services, etc. When we try to uninstall backup exec (we have had trouble with that version) it starts a bit and then the installation just hangs. I've concluded there is something strange with the Windows Installer in the system !! To sum up it: the server is WIERD. We have done a virus scan without finding anything. The server is running APC UPS but have not the problem with the 'loading the computer settings' error I've read about. I've tried to reboot the machine in failmode and installed the Rollup update for SP4 once again. That did nothing good. Any suggestions how to troubleshoot this would be great! Thanks /Lars Sweden

    I'm wanting to upgrade my print server from windows2000 server to windows2003 server. However I'd like to start with a fresh install. My concern is all the printers we have installed on our desktops. I don't want to have to reinstall them on everyones desktop. I know I could push printers out via GPO but we don't...so whats my other options. Thanks in advance for any help\insite anyone can offer. Hutch

Hi,

all in a sudden, I can't start the BITS service on both of my Windows 2003
SP2 X64 Enterprise servers. When I try to start it, the following log
appeared in the System Log:

Event Type:	Error
Event Source:	Service Control Manager
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	7023
Date:		2008-11-4
Time:		16:11:08
User:		N/A
Computer:	SHECPORTAL01
Description:
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with the
following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
 http://www.**--****.com/

the above event repeated in the System Log every 30 seconds. Could you help?

Is that the only event log error? Check the value of ImagePath is;

%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

and is type Reg_Expand_Sz

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS

Also make sure the value of ServiceDll is;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qmgr.dll

and is type Reg_Expand_Sz

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters

and try re-registering.
