  • 1. Phone screen stumper
    I had a phone screen interview recently and one of the questions was, "what do you do when users complain that access to their shared network drives is noticeably and unacceptably slow (2003 domain/XP clients)"? We ruled out that it was anything layer one. Matter of fact, I got the impression that he was looking for something higher than layer four (TCP/UDP) so I stopped focusing on the network equipment. Desperately, I suggested to set up PerfMon on the client side and Server side - to which he said both showed low CPU and traffic utilization (so obviously I was barking up the wrong tree). Humbled, I crumbled under the pressure and said that I'd have to escalate and call MSFT. Does anyone know where else to look given these circumstances? I'm sure I wont get a call back for this job but this peaked my curiosity-
  • 2. 2003 R2 smtp problem
    Ok, I'm stumped. I recently deployed new DL380 with 2003R2 Ent as a member server in a 2k native domain and then added Exchange Ent 2003 SP2. Domain had only one Exchange 2000 Ent server on 2000 Std SP4. Worked fine for the last 4 years, but alas, out of space and time to upgrade. I moved my own mailbox to test after what seemed to be a successful install and was a day or two later before I discovered that I can send and recieve internally to and from users on the 2000 server, but I can only receive external internet mail. Cannot send external. Telnet and smtpdiag to external mail servers return "550 relay denied". I can telnet any external mail server even from my XP workstation but not from this 2003R2 box. I have tried the SCW and even enabled Windows firewall to manually open ports without success. Any ideas before I'm forced to blow this puppy off and start again? Thanks

  • 4. How To Share Disk Drive
    My desktop is XP. I need to install software on a remote w2000 server, which means I can not connect local drives with RDC. I tried sharing my disk drive(CD's), but when I tried to open the share from the server, it says 'inaccessible'. Note, shares to my folders work fine. Is it possible to share a disk drive?(i.e. my d: drive) TIA -- Tom
  • 5. Program not responding.
    Every once and a while my computer seems to "lock up" for what I can determine is no reason. Sometimes it is IE, some times Visual Studio, and sometimes Windows Explorer. The symptoms seem to be the same. The program shows as "not responding" when looked at via the Task Manager. I look at the CPU usage and it is 99 percent idle. Eventually the program comes back. How can I determine the cause of this apparent "lock up"? Thank you. Kevin

Hi,

all in a sudden, I can't start the BITS service on both of my Windows 2003
SP2 X64 Enterprise servers. When I try to start it, the following log
appeared in the System Log:

Event Type:	Error
Event Source:	Service Control Manager
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	7023
Date:		2008-11-4
Time:		16:11:08
User:		N/A
Computer:	SHECPORTAL01
Description:
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with the
following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
 http://www.**--****.com/

the above event repeated in the System Log every 30 seconds. Could you help?

Is that the only event log error? Check the value of ImagePath is;

%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

and is type Reg_Expand_Sz

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS

Also make sure the value of ServiceDll is;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qmgr.dll

and is type Reg_Expand_Sz

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters

and try re-registering.
