  • 1. DCOM Server/Workstation Disconnects
    Clients were experiencing frequent disconnects from the SBS 2003 Server; turns out the Server was restarting without warning and without anything I could see in the Event Log. While checking Services I saw the DCOM Service, with the Restart Computer option checked after Service failure. I changed the Recovery option to Take No Action and no more disconnects ... but why is that Service there? And will changing the Recovery option cause future problems? Thx in Advance ...
  • 2. Unable to get desktop on Server 2003
    Hi, One of my servers is acting strange: I am able to log on to the server but the desktop doesn's shop up. When I connect to the server by RDP (not console) the desktop pops up and works just fine. RDP console gives the same error as the console. The only message in the system log is Application Error, Category (100), Event 1000: Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4062, fault address 0x0000bee7. The server is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and is up-to-date using WSUS. Is there a solution to my problem? Regards, Lex Elzinga
  • 3. Security nightmare
    Dear all, First, please be paitient due to my inadequate knowledge in networks. My company has a server (file server and print server with windows 2003 server) and also a proxy server for internet access (Linux). I have 8 users logging on the server and also 3 workgroups (20 persons) which are not logging into the server, but are using it for internet access. I need to secure my network (I may consult an expert to do that, but I need to know what I need first), so data will be secure and also in some cases (users dealing with confidential information) the administrator not to be able to see/read those confidential information. From the little experience I have, I know that, using the ip address and the hidden C (hard disk) of any connected PC I may gain access to any information on that PC. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, GeorgeCY
  • 4. Disk Quota's
    Hi All Here is the problem I work at a School with 700 students and 80 staff. We have numerous 2003 servers, but the main server "fileserver" holds all of the users main data. On this server we have 3 folders, 1: Students 2: Staff 3: Office on a 500 gig volume. In students are all the students home dirs, In Staff, the same, office is for admin docs etc. Active Directory is set up similar, Students OU's, Staff OU's etc. With sub directories as needed. Could you please advise how to set up Disk quotas on students only (say 500meg) that will not effect Staff or Office users on the same volume. Will setting a Group policy on the Students OU resolve this. ? And how do I make sure it only counts the fileserver volume and not all the other servers that they access. Any help would be appreciated. Graham

Hi,

all in a sudden, I can't start the BITS service on both of my Windows 2003
SP2 X64 Enterprise servers. When I try to start it, the following log
appeared in the System Log:

Event Type:	Error
Event Source:	Service Control Manager
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	7023
Date:		2008-11-4
Time:		16:11:08

Computer:	SHECPORTAL01
Description:
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with the
following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
 http://www.**--****.com/

the above event repeated in the System Log every 30 seconds. Could you help?

Is that the only event log error? Check the value of ImagePath is;

%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

and is type Reg_Expand_Sz

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS

Also make sure the value of ServiceDll is;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qmgr.dll

and is type Reg_Expand_Sz

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters

and try re-registering.
