  • 1. Why do my desktop icons change size back and forth
So, I have a new Lenovo ThinkPad T61p with a 15.4" monitor with a resolution of 1920x1200. It's a lovely machine all around, but that res at that size makes for a teeny-tiny font and icon size. So, having heard of the nifty new dpi scaling in Vista (it also shipped with Vista Business x64, I should add, as so few laptops are shipping with x64 flavors yet!), I set the dpi to 150% in the custom dpi settings. This often works quite well. But one of the things I've noticed is that sometimes the icons on my desktop just randomly switch size between the default 96dpi size and the 144dpi size. Usually a reboot will return them to 144dpi size. Any ideas why this is happening and how to get it to quit changing and stay at the 144dpi I've requested?

Is anyone else having problems accessing this newsgroup? I had been accessing it from the Vista website with IE 7. For the past two days or so, I have found that, using IE 7, I can read the posts, but I cannot sign in, post a reply or edit my profile. At some points, the page asks for and accepts my password, but nothing ever happens after that. This time, I have fired up Windows Mail, and it remains to be seen whether I can post by that route.
  • 3. Window Update Fails to Install KB38979
Window's Update has repeatedly (4 times so far) failed to install KB938979. I observed the installation and notice something unusual. As normal, the computer restarts to apply the patch and displays message "Applying Updates" during startup. However, it then reboots and displays the message again. It completes the second startup. Checking the Windows Update History shows that the update has failed with an 8007002 error. The trouble shooting step for an 8007002 error is to delete the temporary update files that Windows uses to identify updates which are located in C:/Windows/ SoftwareDistribution/ DataStore and then try the update again. I did this and it still fails. For now, I hid the KB938979 update so that it doesn't keep trying to install. My computer (home build with Vista Home Premium) is running fine. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? Is anyone else having this problem? George

Avast not updating automatically on Vista

Postby J » Sat, 27 Sep 2008 05:58:16 GMT

Hello,
I'm using Vista Home Basic.
Avast 4.8 FREE
I have it set to do an signature file update automatically.
However, it never does an update automatically.
If I run it manually, it works fine.
Any ideas?
No errors in the event viewer.

Hi,

Mine updates automatically - I set the program to update automatically
too.

Have you looked in the Updates (connections ) window ? I leave both of
those unchecked.

I've never had any problems with Avast free.
Uninstall it, then reinstall it.
It is compatible with vista 32bit and 64bit.

i had avast for a while and it worked fine.. i'd recommend NOD32
it's pretty lean, and efficient. Kapersky is a beast on the resources
if that's a concern you're having.

I have the same problem with the avast update. I am running vista home
premium - 64 bit version. I also have the same problem with automatic
updates from Taxcut. I suspect there is something in vista security or
networking causing the problem, probably unique to the 64 bit version.
Anyone have any ideas?

What version are you using? According the official website you must use
version 4.7.892 or above on Windows Vista.

1.Vista and Avast Update error 80070424

First of all, sorry for any bad englis (from Norway here.. ;-) )

Hi!
Have been searching all over for a solution for this problem...

I had avast antivirus running in the background while updating
WinVista x64, and then it came up with a file (think it was
secureupdate.exe, but am not totally sure).

Stupid me said, -"ok, delete that sucker!".

Since then i get the error message 80070424 whenever I try to update.

*I have tried the standalone-program, but even if I am TOTALLY sure I
download the 64-bit version, I get the message "does not comply to
your system".

3.Install Updates Automatically fails to identify updates-Vista

When I have the Install Updates Automatically option selected in Vista, it
fails to identify any available update.
However, if I select Never Check for updates and uncheck the other options
and then manually check for update, updates do come up and can be installed?

Why is automatic updates not working for me?

5.Windows Updates not Automatically Updating

Hello all. I'm having a problem with Automatic Updates (and from the posts
I've read, it seems other people are having similar problems), but I'm not
certain that I understand what the solution is - could someone please help.

Basically, I have our Domain Policy set to automatically download and
install updates every morning at 4:00. All the machines in the domain have
this policy enforced and the machines are set to automatically download the
updates at the specified time - this option is not configurable from the
client workstations. However, it seems to me that ever since Windows Update
v5 came out, none of the Windows XP systems have been able to automatically
download and install the updates (the automatic feature for our Windows 2003
Servers still work - but they still use Windows Update v4).

Did anything happen between v4 and v5 of Windows Update that could account
for this behavior? Is there some additional service that I need to enable
on the XP machines to ensure updates are downloaded? I've seen some
mentions of BITS needing to be enabled, but after setting it to start
automatically, this problem still persists. Can someone please shed some
light on this for me? It is very important that I get this functionality
back up and running so that our users' workstations are adequately
protected.

Thanks!
