Are you rebooting to DOS by using Start> Shutdown> Restart in MS-DOS Mode? If yes, find the file named "Exit to DOS.pif" in the Windows folder. Right-click the file, click Properties> Program tab> Advanced button. Which option is selected: "Use current MS-DOS configuration", or "Specify a new configuration"? Do you need access to the Zip drive in a reboot to MS-DOS? ....glen Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems "Martin Prince" < XXXX@XXXXX.COM > wrote in message news:046401c36fe6$9668fd10$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM ... > When I restart my computer in MS-Dos mode, it hangs at a > line "Finding a drive letter for Iomega Guest95......" > > I have an Iomega drive with the software fully installed > from the CD and it shows in My Computer to be assigned to > Drive D. > > Grateful for any help.

All of a sudden I am unable to install software to use a digital camera or a card reader. The CD ROM plays music CDs OK,installs screensavers from CDs, and reads data CDs created on my other computer. However, 80% of the time it can't read the CD for the hardware installation and the 20% of the time it does (after 5 - 10 minutes) it aborts the installation. I run Windows 98 and just today ran all the updates. Thank you for the help

A fatal exception 06 has occurred at...

Postby Chris » Tue, 01 Jul 2003 17:59:20 GMT

I recently formatted the computer and installed Win98SE.
Everything was fine and worked untill I installed the
driver for the sound card. Now whenever the computer
starts up comes 'a fatal exception 06 has occurred at'
followed by numbers. How do I prevent this from happening?

My guess is that you can do this be removing the driver that evidently is
causing the problem. Revert to the earlier driver.

A standard troubleshooting technique is: Determine when the problem began
and what changes were made just before that. Undo the changes. See if the
problem goes away. You've done the first part very well.

On 06 exception error is an Invalid Opcode Fault. It's a coding error. If
the driver is the causel, then it is because the driver was incorrectly
written.

If reverting to the earlier driver doesn't solve the problem, write back and
we'll look for other causes.

I removed the driver and now the error doesn't appear. But
now I don't have sound, the driver I used I downloaded
from Gateway so what can i do?

OK, you have proven that you need a driver, but that the provided driver is
flawed.

I think the next thing to do is contact Gateway and explain the problem. Ask
if they have something better.

Also, Gateway is really good about making available information on what
components you're using. Go to the site for the manufacturer of the sound
card and look for a better driver.

There are also excellent web sites that pecialize in providing drivers. I
have a collection of links to them here:

Thank you very much Jim. I used the link you provided to
find the official website for the sound card and
downloaded their driver which works fine.
