  • 3. different programs loading for different users
I am interested in loading different programs for different users. I have a Dell 8250 with 120 MB HD and 1 gb RAM. I would like to start some video editing of the kids. I wanted to set up 2 accounts -- one for everyday use and one which I will call "photo". In "Photo", I only want to load those programs needed to deal with video editing and video/photo printing and NOT load my "usual" programs such as Norton's, PDA hot synch, my usual non-photo printer etc. The reason -- to try to have 2 profiles to maximize performance for both settings. 1) is this nuts?? 2) can this be done. I know how to set up different accounts --- but setting up different accounts seems to deal with access to programs and access to files. I want to maximize resources and limit what programs are LOADED at startup. thoughts? mark

No Desktop Icons After File And Settings Transfer Wizard

Postby Keenan True » Sun, 11 Apr 2004 03:46:52 GMT

I just completed a Network Transfer from a Windows 2000
Professional computer to a Windows XP Professional. The
files, favorites, and most everything else I can tell got
transferred fine. But there are no icons on the desktop.
I cannot add icons to the desktop (it lets me go through
the action, but nothing appears on the desktop). The
desktop under Documents and Settings for the user show
the icons there, and when I add a new icon, the icon
appears in the deskop folder, but not on the actual
desktop. This was a factory install (DELL) of Windows XP,
brand new computer. Any Thoughts????

Right click the Desktop/Arrange Icons By and make sure Show Desktop Icons is
selected.

1.How To Get Files & Settings Transfer Wizard to Transfer ALL Files/Settings For DIfferently Names Users

I'm moving files/settings from one laptop to another. Each has XP Home with
a single login (Paul). I used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to do
this. The problem is that some settings and files such as the Outlook PST
didn't transfer. I think it's because the original laptop has "Owner" in
C:\Documents and Settings, and the new one has "Paul" in Documents and
Settings. Of course, each has "All Users" and "Default User".

Is there a way to transfer the settings and files for "Owner" on the old
system to "Paul" on the new system? If there isn't, how can I make sure I
have a perfect copy of the old system's Outlook 2003 contacts, rules, mail,
etc, especially the mail account info.
Thanks

2.Files and Settings Transfer Wizard didn't transfer Outlook and other Office settings

I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension computer, on which I've just
replaced the hard drive. Prior to removing the old hard drive, I ran the
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I saved the resulting file to a
removable hard drive. Then once I'd installed the new hard drive and
installed Windows XP on that, I ran the Wizard on the new drive.

The Wizard worked like a charm on most of my settings. It pulled over all my
old data files to My Documents, pulled my old settings and Favorites into
Internet Explorer and made my new desktop look just like the old one.
However, it did NOT copy over any of my MS Office settings. Mostly what I
would like to have would be my customizations in Word (shortcuts, toolbars
and custom templates) and my Outlook settings (Profiles and Accounts. I'm
wondering if the reason that the MS Office settings were not transferred was
because the old hard drive had MS Office 2003 SP2 installed whereas, at the
time of the transfer, the new one just had the basic Office 2003
installation (without updates). I have now installed the SP1 and SP2 updates
on top of that.

Which brings me to my question ... what result would I get if I ran the
Wizard again? Would it duplicate the data files that were previously
transferred? Or would it just check and replace any that had changed? Am I
likely to get the Office settings right if I run it again? Does my theory
above about the different versions of Office sound like a plausible reason
why the settings weren't transferred the last time?

If duplication is likely, should I just delete the current contents of My
Documents which is where practically all my data files reside before running
the Wizard again? I think the only exceptions are one PST file and my
Quicken files.

If running the Wizard again is likely to be unpredictable, I may be better
just manually recreating my settings.

3.Files And Settings Transfer Wizard Did Not Transfer Outlook Settings

I'm moving files/settings from one laptop to another. Each has XP Home and
Office 2003. Each has a single user (login=Paul) and same password. I used
the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (FSTW) to do this. The problem is
that the Outlook PST and settings (and other settings and files) didn't
transfer.

I think it's because the original laptop has "Owner" in C:\Documents and
Settings, the new one has "Paul" in Documents and Settings. Of course, each
has "All Users" and "Default User". Is there a way to transfer the settings
and files for "Owner" on the old system to "Paul" on the new system? If
there isn't, how can I make sure I have a perfect copy of the old system's
Outlook 2003 contacts, rules, mail, etc, especially the mail account info.
Thanks

quesiton]

5.File Settings and Transfer Wizard won't write Wizard CD

I want to migrate data from my old computer (98) to my new computer (XP) via
serial cable. To do that I need to create a "Wizard Disk" for my old
computer. I'm trying to use "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" on my new
computer to create the Wizard CD, but that program doesn't recognize my
CD-RW/DVD drive (E:). The dropdown list used to select the output device
includes choices for only F, G, H, and I, my 8-in-1 media drives. How can I
get it to write to my CD on drive E?
