  • 1. virusprotect in taskbar
A friend got the virusprotect malware loaded , even with norton AV 2008. I was able to remove much of it with spybot and hijack this, but I cant get it out of the taskbar. Are there any tools or tricks for this? he can browse now without it taking over his system but I woul like to remove that annoying taskbar warning. Also dissapointed in norton for not stopping it. recently downloaded the free version of WMP11 and since then cannot play any wmv files either off line or when i am online. Sys Windows xp withSP2..tried sysrestore, tried reinstalling WMP11, tried going back to previous version but it is not there..when I try to play WMV file I get the following msg Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
  • 3. Automatic Windows XP Update
This morning Windows downloaded an automatic update, but it could not update the following: Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806). In addition, and I believe it may a related problem, I cannot get my QuickBooks program to open. Any ideas what could be wrong?
  • 4. Reccomend a backup program (not clone) that can recover the full OS?
I may not be using the correct terminology, so let me explain my situation & goal: I just got a (used, but clean) laptop with a 40GB HD from an employee purchase program. They installed XP on it, but because of their original licensing with the manufacturer, did not provide me an XP installation disk and there is no recovery partition on the HD. I'd like to make a compressed backup of the entire HD so that if I need to start from scratch (effectively re-install the OS), I can just overwrite the HD with the current image. 1) I'd like a compressed image just to save storage space (since I haven't installed any software yet, maybe I can even back it up to DVD if the backup file is small enough). I'd rather not fill up 40GB of a backup drive with an empty image if I don't have to. 2) If there are any free tools that can do this, that would be great, but I'll take any suggestions. I'm confused by all the backup terminology out there- it isn't clear which programs are doing file/directory backups vs. actual OS backups. 3) Eventually I might even want to upgrade the size of the HD (maybe...) so if the image can be pushed back onto the same PC with a larger HD at some point in the future, that would be good to know too. Thank you, Keith

Yes, we've seen all three of your posts on the subject.. I guess no one
has an answer to your dilemma. If I had that problem, I'd look in these

- Display Properties, Appearance tab, change the Font Size to Normal.

- Display Properties, Appearance tab, Advanced button, scroll down to
each item and make sure that, if it has a font size, each is large
enough. In mine:

Active Title Bar shows Trebuchet MS and Size 10 for the font.
 Menu shows Tahoma size 8.
Message Box, Palette Title, Selected Items, and Tooltip show the same
font and size. A different font could certainly be much smaller in view.

- Settings, Advanced, DPI setting: Normal Size (96 DPI). This would
change all text sizes though.

yep tried all that and still nothing. It has to be something in the
registry to edit.

4.Making large icons

I have been fiddling with creating large Vista icons in GIMP, but I find
that whenever I zoom any icons I make larger than medium-sized, they
don't grow any more. What are the requirements for fully sizable Vista
icons? Does Microsoft have a web page about this? Does anyone happen to
know if GIMP is capable of creating large icons for Vista? (Everything
I've found on the Web so far suggests it can. I don't want to download a
dedicated icon-builder if I can help it, since I'm just fiddling.)
