I've just installed Windows XP for my friends PC, and I'm having a major problem. The problem is that his dial up connection will suddenly log off, but will log right back on. It will not stay logged in for more than 5 to 10 minutes. We installed Registry Mechanic but we are still getting this problem. If it's not cmmgr32, what else could it be to cause the disconnection of the dial up connection? It does it on both firefox and internet explorer browsers.
  • 2. Getting a connection?
Hi all, The modem in question is a Diamond SuperMax 56K USB V.92 Model # SM56USBSL. I have lots of options on my phone such as call forwarding, call waiting and I also have a security system hooked up through the phone line. I installed the software/driver then connected the modem. Installation went ok. When I try to dialup my ISP the modem dials and then I hear the tone but only for a fraction of a second. Then I get the error message that the other end disconnected me. So my questiones are: 1. What do I have to do if anything because of the alarm system? 2. What should go in the init string to wait for the dial tone a little longer, and handle all the other things on my line? thanks, charles......
  • 3. "Network Name No Longer Available"
I have two computers (A & B). A is a Windows 2000 Server desktop that connects to a router in wired fashion with Intel Pro 100+ Management adapter. B is a laptop running XP Pro that connects to the same router wirelessly (G) at 54 Mbps. The router is a D-Link DI-624. The router has the latest firmware, and the adapters have the latest drivers. A & B both belong to the same workgroup. A has a fixed IP. B has an IP automatically assigned. A's NIC is set to Auto Negotiate. Whenever I try to copy files from B to A via network shares (connecting by A's IP address, not its network name), a few files will copy and then I get "The specified network name is no longer available," with regard to A, even though A still appears on the network and does not seem to have lost its connectivity. In troubleshooting, I have changed B from wireless to wired (also set to Auto), and I still get this error. I have shut down all software firewalls and still get the error. What do I need to do to prevent this network dropping from occuring? I need this to work not only for copying files, but for keeping network shares open between the two computers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  • 4. connection problems. winsock? Please help
Im having problems with my internet connection. When i start my browser it takes a long time to display the start page. Then I can browse 4-5 web pages in a row with incredibly slow loading speeds. Then when I click a link/type an url i get the "page cannot be displayed" message. This continues until I release/renew my ip, then I can browse a couple of pages again before the same message comes up. If I run the "diagnose connection" option in my internet explorer, it says it detects a problem in my winsock catalog. Then it asks if to restore these files to default. I answer yes, reboot and nothing has changed. I also tried downloading a few tools to fix winsock, but nothing helps. It makes no difference if I connect with cable or wireless. Please if anyone has any ideas, I would be most grateful. Larsson

Seacon,

On a network winch uses DNS solely to locate resources, you have to setup your
domain, and DNS infrastructure, precisely.
< http://www.**--****.com/ ;

If you can run "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from 2 or preferably 3
computers, and post the results here, we can help you identify the problem.
This article will explain how to provide both diagnostics. The more details
about your network that you can provide, the better chance of identifying the
problem.

Or, you may benefit from reading this troubleshooting list, and resolving each
problem found.

Seacon,

Yesterday, you were asking about one computer that was having trouble seeing
other computers, which in my suspicion, indicated either:
# A browser conflict.
# A (relatively) simple DNS setup problem.

I suggested 2 procedures which have been done successfully by others asking for
help here in the past, and asked for some simple diagnostics to help confirm or
deny my suspicions.

You came back with a portion of the requested diagnostics, and the news that
"one of our user had tried to do someting in the server and by mistake delete or
uninstall something".

IMHO, you have passed the point where you can be helped by this forum. You need
to seek the support of an experienced, local professional to work on site, to
repair the damage, and to secure the network so your users can't work on things
they have no business working on.

I apologise for being blunt, but if you depend upon your computer network for
your business, I think that's what you need to do.

If you feel that this advice is erroneous, or if you need further advice for
specific problems, please let us know.

1.Computer does not appear in my network places

Hi,

Since some weeks some of my computers (clients and servers) does not appear
in "my network places" anymore. I can find them in the "search computers"

2.Some computer icon not appear in My Network Places

Currently I have a problem to browse some computer by using the My Network Places :-

My PC is Win2K server, and is a Primary Domain Controller(PDC) as well, I would like to browse 1 of the PC which is running on WinXP Pro, and it is configure as 1 of the member of Peer-to-peer workgroup (example called "workgroupA") and is not a member of any domain, so when I try to browse this Computer icon thru My Network Places, it doesn't appear in "workgroupA", but I can manage to view others Computer icon in that workgroup, and others Computer icon from other workgroups and domain as well. Why is this happen ?

I have tried to use the other PC which is also a member of the WorkgroupA (running on Win95), and browse that WinXP Pro PC above, but still can't get it display.

Is there any limitation to form a workgroup ? For example, one workgroup only can support XX PCs....

Hope anyone who facing this kind of problem B4 may guide me how to solve it. Thank you very much.

I have added a computer successfully to our domain but
even after days of being on the network it will not

happened only once in awhile, usually PCs will appear
almost immediately once added to the domain and can be
reached via unc.

All the PC receive there IP via DHCP.
