[Info-Ingres] Ingres Net and performance

Postby Oscar Carl » Thu, 26 Jun 2008 07:57:26 GMT

Hi all:
I have Ingres 2006 r2 Ingres Vision applications running on a RHEL 4 64
bits running against Ingres 2.6 sp5 on Tru64 machine (using Ingres Net +
installation password).
Before this scenario, Ingres Vision applications were running on the
same tru64 DBMS Local hosts. On this old scenario my batch processes
were better peformance than with the new one (client/server).
I know that Ingres Net is a player here for performance degradation.
What I need to know if is there any Ingres net configuration parameter
or Linux/Tru64 OS parameters that I need to modify in order to increase
my batch processes performance

Any help will be appreciate

Oscar

PD: I have a gigabit connection between servers

What's the BIO count for one of these jobs? I don't want to leap to any
conclusions, but cursors are evil.

Not really, no. If you have multiple concurrent batch jobs you might get
benefit from having multiple Ingres Net servers at each end. I wouldn't be
too optimistic though.

Is it a dedicated connection? A crossover cable can produce miracles. I
had an application at one site that looked like it was going to run for 36
hours over what they were convinced was a high-speed connection. A back of
the envelope calculation showed they were getting a bare trickle of data. I
replaced the LAN with a crossover cable to run the job and it was done in
less than half an hour. It may not be a practical long-term solution but if
it works you will know where the problem is.

The two are complementary, like the post and the telephone.

I'm not a big IRC guy because I like the asychronicity of email, and I
agree with Roy that Ingres at this point is better off with one email
channel. But the immediacy of IRC can be useful in its own right, and
will help the larger community if its denizens make the effort to forward
any useful outcomes to the mailing list.

2.[Info-ingres] Calling Ingres Database Procedures through .Net Data Provider

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Ingres r3 supports row-producing procedures. The Ingres .NET Data
Provider reads the result set produced by that procedure just as any
result set produced by a query.

If the procedure is something like this:

drop procedure rowproc \p\g

create procedure rowproc

   result row(char(32)) as

declare tabname char(32);

begin

   for select table_name into :tabname from iitables

   do

      return row(:tabname);

   endfor;

end;

\p\g

The .NET application would execute the procedure and read the result set
like this:

            IDataReader reader = null;

      cmd = new IngresCommand(

            "rowproc", conn, txn); //"{ call rowproc}", conn, txn);

      cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;

      reader = cmd.ExecuteReader();

      Console.Write("ColumnName='" + reader.GetName(0) + "'");

      Console.WriteLine();

      while (reader.Read())

      {

            Console.Write(reader.GetString(0) + "\t");

      }

      Console.WriteLine();

      reader.Close();

Hope this helps,

Dave

3.[Info-Ingres] Ingres .Net data provider and VS 2005 Data Sources

4.[Info-Ingres] Ingres 2006 Net Enterprise Edition

Hi all:
I have a doubt about fee I have to pay for in the next scenario:

1.- Machine A: Linux OS with dual core CPU as my Ingres Enterprise
Edition database server
2.- Machine B: Linux OS with dual core CPU as my Ingres Net Enterprise
Edition client environment. This machine will run ABF/Vision
applications, against Machine A.

Question:
I know I have to pay CPU fee for Machine A (about 8K per socket). But,
Do I have to pay the same fee for Machine B? Note that Machine B will
have installed Ingres Net only (Ingres Client), not the DBMS.

I will appreciate any help

Regards

Oscar
