You'd be surprised at how easy it is to run a server off the end of 13 gigs or so of memory. I do it all the time! :-) But realistically, no, repeated isn't strictly needed. Detecting identical queries, and allowing for DDL and similar changes, is not nearly as trivial as you'd like to think, but it's doable, I'm sure. Karl

On a 32-bit system, the max process size is typically 2 Gb.
To go larger, you'll need to run a 64-bit version on a 64-bit
machine like Opteron.

There are tradeoffs in running huge caches; the cache management lists
are longer, consistency point preparation will take longer, cache
cleans (when you do something that requires that a table's pages be
cleared from the cache, such as a MODIFY) can take longer.
Remember that linux is caching file pages for you as well, so it's
not really essential to have a DMF cache large enough for your entire
database.

1.Large cache on r3

Hello all,

Does anyone have experience with very large cache sizes on Ingres R3,
running on linux (32 bit, 2.6 kernel)?

By very large, I mean over 2 gigabytes. There are the usual shmmax
kernel settings, but I feel that there are some other things that must
be done as well. It would seem that using CBF, the maximum amount of
memory for dmf_memory (by calculation) is 2 gigabytes.

I would very much like to play around with having most of our database
in memory!
