We have a headoffice with SBS2003 and ADS. We have a couple of small branch offices with 2 pcs each that are on their own workgroups but connected to the headoffice by linksys vpn routers. Currently the branch offices are just using pst files but would like to have them connect to exchange but unable to make that initial connection that I can make in the office with laptops and then use the exchange proxy or rely on the vpn connection. Is there any way around this. don't want to install any servers in the branch offices. Thanks chris

Migrating from GW 7 to Exchange 2007. I have already migrated a couple of users over and am experimenting to see what glitches there are. When an Exchange user sends an email with any type of attachment (jpg, pdf, etc) to a GW user, that user only sees TNEF.001, TNEF.002, etc instead of the attachments. I've done some searching and we've tried setting the Outlook client to send as plain-text only, that doesn't help. Any updates to this issue? Bill

Folders not releasing space when deleted

Postby Q2hyaXMgUXVpbm4 » Sun, 06 Jun 2004 01:46:05 GMT

I have tracked a problem to folders created by the end users
When I delete a subfolder without first emptying the subfolder (each message must be deleted) the space is not recovered
So a problem exists when sub folders are deleted. According to SM after I delete and empty deleted items, on a folder containing any items, there are no deleted items. I can go into recover deleted Items on the client and recover them, but the mailbox on the server side grows again. This does not happen when I delete individual messages. Individual messages that are deleted show up as deleted items in SM and when recovered they take their original space and are cleared when deleted again. Space from folders when deleted is not cleared on the server

Chris, you seem to have good handle on what's going on -- however we have to
ask some basic questions:

What version of Exchange? What service pack level?
Have you enabled dumpsteralwayson registry value (to see "recover deleted
items" on all folders) - This may help to see if items are in the dumpster.
Are you absolutely sure that folder, together with its contents are
hard-deleted (i.e. not in the deleted items container anymore)
Are you sure your databases are healthy? If so, give me the time interval
between two consecutive 1221 events from application on that pertains to the
same store database.

It is possible.
You can try to use eseutil.exe to defragment the database ( privX.dgf and pubX.dbf). After the defragmentation, files will be smaller

Baris, Here are the answers to your post

We are and Exchange 2003 shop. we have not installed SP1 as of yet
I have not enabled the dumpsteralwayson registry value
I am 100% positive of the delete process as I have done the exact same with each of the other 3 servers and all 24 mailbox stores. This is the only store exibiting this issue. We run cleanups every night and I have verified in the event log that the 1221 ran clean. Here are the events (specific names deleted) from the previous 2 nights.

Event Type:	Informatio
Event Source:	MSExchangeIS Mailbox Stor
Event Category:	General
Event ID:	122

Description
The database "Storage Group 1\Mailboxstore3" has 1 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

i Chris,

You've provided new information, you're saying there is only one store
exhibiting this problem. Now this leads me to believe we may be dealing with
a logical corruption on the store. Do you have the opportunity to run
isinteg against this store? See if it finds any relevant errors. Note that
multiple iterations of isinteg may be necessary until you get zero errors.

See if you can repro the problem then,

Baris.

aris,
Yes I have run isinteg and it came back clean. I have also run eseutil /p and /d options. I have now opened a call with PSS.

1.5.5 database does not release free space

I've 5.5 Std on NT and a 16 Gb database. :(

After many users reduced their mailboxes using .pst and released at least
2Gb, I can't obtain free space doing eseutil /d commands

I've already backed-up the database and restarted and no good news

Any Idea ?

I'm considering to upgrade to 5.5 Enterprise. (When i discover how to obtain
the software)

Thanks

2.Deleting and Purging Exchange Mailboxes Does Not Free Up Space

3.how can I see how much space is used by Deleted items folders

I need to see how much space is being used for deleted
items on a exchange 2000 server. When using system
manager, the deleted items column doesn't reflect what is
in the users deleted items folders. In fact the users with
0 in the deleted items column seem to have the most
deleted items. If I could see a breakdown of each users
deleted items that would be optimum. Any utilies or
downloads anyone know of?

4.Low Disk Space- priv1.edb and stm does not decrease after deleting

My exchange 2000 sever is low on disk space, only 500MB left. I had the
users deleted old emails or move to pst and have move some mailbox to another
exchange server. But the priv1.edb and priv1.stm still stay the same. It
does not decrease. All I can delete now is the log file. All other files is
needed. What can I do to decrease the edb and stm?

I'm running ex2000 enterprise w/sp1 on win2K sp4.

Thanks in advance.

5.Deleted Public mailbox e-mail address- Won't release address

I have Windows 2000 domain, w/ AD and a Exchange 2000 system.

I had a public mailbox two years ago, but it was no longer in use, so I
disabled the mailbox. But now I need to reuse that e-maill address. I can
find the public mailbox if I do a search in AD. When I try to access the box,
all it says is: 'Use Exchange System Manager to access full features of this
box.'

The problem is, either Active Directory, or Exchange will not let me get
back into this box. I've tried to rename it, in hopes it would change the
properties, but I still can't get into the box properties to release the
e-maill address from this particular box.

Looked in the MS KB, but can't really find this problem.

6. Space that Deleted Items Created on Exchange Database

7. Delete Mail Stores to free up space

8. Deleted mailboxes don't free up space is edb
