  • 1. Link to Legacy 5.5 Organisation
sWe are about to move to Exchange 2003 and for many reason that would take too long to explain, we will not be doing either an upgrade or migration but creating the new structure 'by hand' - i.e. each user will be recreated on the new AD including the mailbox. However, we need to link to the old 5.5 Organisation to communicate with sites that have not been 'migrated'. I assume we will need to install Ex2003 with "Join or upgrade an existing Exchange 5.5 Organisation", setup an ADC with SRS into a new 5.5 site. Again, we do not need to migrate user accounts or mailboxes over to the new AD Forest, we just need to do Directory Replication of the GAL into AD. Is this the correct way to do it?
  • 2. I think my 5.5 server is hosed!!!
Ok, I have a long story followed by a question. So bear with me. In Oct I migrated from 5.5 to 2003 on a new server running 2000 SP4. The migration went smoothly. Everything transfered like it was supposed to. However, since I was new to Exchange I relied heavily on other people's input. I was told that after the migration was complete I could safely shutdown the 5.5 server and put a alias in DNS to point to the new 2003 server. So I did. I realized in December that this was not what I should have done. 5.5 is still in AD and 2003 still tries to communicate with it. However, when I startup my 5.5 machine now I get several error messages: -The database signature does not match the log signature for database D:\... -Error 0xfffffdee inititalizing the Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store database -Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. -There are also several warnings about trying to recover the database. Here's my current goals: I would like to get all of the clients (150+) to point to the new server so I can take the dns pointer out. I would also like to switch 2003 to native mode. And I would like to remove the 5.5 from the directory/2003 so I can reassign the server to another location. What are my options??? (besides not listening to the so called "exchange guru" that screwed me up in the first place) -Nick
  • 3. Exchange 2003 Migration from Exchange 2000
I am looking to migrate from Exchange 2000 to 2003 and add an additional DC running Windows 2003. I currently only have one DC due to budget reasons for hardware. What would be the best migration path? I have all the software Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003 I might possibly need. 1. First promote a 2003 Server to an additional DC, then do a clean build of 2003 server and exchange? 2. Upgrade the existing 2000 server in place to Exchange 2003/Windows 2003? 3. Promote 2003 to additional DC, Upgrade existing 2000 server to Exchange 2003/Wndows 2003. Thanks! Eric
  • 4. Several email domains...how set up?
We have email that's delivered to several domains--through the same E2K3 server. These are: xyz.org (primary--mail's flowing fine here) xyz.com abc.org def.org How do I set up these other domains in Exchange so it knows to deliver to the proper person (or mail-enabled, public folder)? I've got some urgency here, because I just realized that two of my folders are not receiving email (xyz.com email addresses) and they usually receive stuff regularly. Thanks in advance for insights/help!

Server 2008

Postby Paul Bergson » Fri, 17 Oct 2008 02:06:56 GMT

Trying to figure out how I can load the Exchange System Management Components
for 2003 on Server 2008. Is this possible? If not can I load the Exchange
2007 management tools and manage Exchange 2003 from a 2008 Server?

If anyone is aware of how to setup either scenario could you point me to
a web site with further details, etc...

Thanks

ESM on Server 2008 is not supported. For co-existence systems management,
see http://www.**--****.com/

If it were me, I would stick with Remote Desktop for managment of Ex 2003
Server.

Ok.

I kinda of figured that was where I was going to be headed, I had just hoped
that wasn't the case.

1.SBS 2008 onto Std Server 2008 AD with Exchange trial

All,
I am working with someone who has a Windows Server 2008 domain with 2 64 bit
DC's, one running the Exchange in trail mode.
We can either purchase Exchange license or go for SBS 2008.
However I have a question - can SBS install along side the current setup of
would we need to do a full upgrade install of OS, Exchange etc?
All the user really wants is the SBS plug in for Windows Server Backup.

Anyone know a release date for this plug-in as a standalone for just Windows
Server with Exchange?
