  • 1. half in shaders
Hi all, I've noticed that nvidia uses half float "half" in many examples. I tried to run one of them in my friends' computer and it fails because it does not recognize the half. In my computer it runs, but I have the nvidia SDK installed. What do I have to do or install so that he as well has support for the half ? I noticed that my shader is a bit faster when I use half. Thanks.
  • 2. Rendering Perforated Pipes
Hello All, I am kind of new to openGL and have covered the basic ground required to begin working on my project. Concepts such as color , lighting , viewing , selection/feedback, display lists, texturing are clear to me now. A small module of my project requires me to render a perforated pipe. It is basically a cylinder which has small perforations (circular holes) on its surface. The way i have developed it right now , is purely mathetmatical, vis-a-vis , tesselating the perforated pipe mathematically into different regions with different resolutions ( by resolution i mean no. of triangles per unit area). so regions where i have perforations (circular holes on the surface) are high in resultion , so the triangles can approximate the surface better, and simple cylindrical areas have low resolution so that the system is no too heavy for openGL. implementation is done using display lists, which makes it quite fast. but still i have to use quite high resolutions for the circular area, (1000 triangles for a single circular hole) and there are 100 such holes on 1 cylindrical surface. recently i was looking at 3DS max, they have also implemented such a circular perforation on a cylinder using texture mapping, they just a load a black circular texture on a cylinder and "cutout" that portion from the surface. Can you give more insights on how 3ds MAX goes about implementing this using textures. cheers Harsh
  • 3. newbie: scene graph library with Qt4?
I'm trying to write my very first OpenGL application with the Qt library and I would like to also learn how to implement a scene graph. To do that I am trying to find a scene graph library which can be used without a glitch with Qt4, so that my learning process goes as smooth as possible. So could anyone please point me out a nice scene graph library (free, open source) which not only can be used without problems with Qt4 but is also easy to use? Thanks in advance Rui Maciel -- Running Kubuntu 6.06 with KDE 3.5.3 and proud of it. jabber: XXXX@XXXXX.COM
  • 4. cube maps - rendering from Maya
I'm trying to render 6 cubemap textures from within Maya. I have 6 90 deg fov cameras each looking down one of the major axes. All fine but when I use them in opengl program there's a visible seam (in reflection) between some of the maps. Probably because camera up vectors are not set correctly in Maya. How to orient the cameras (up vectors) properly?

quark to ? compatibility

Have a specific problem with compatibility. Am using Quark Express 4.0 and
wrote a 35 page book with graphics, text and pictures that I enhanced and
edited. Now I am trying to print this book BUT to print in full color with
the clarity that makes it look good cost anywhere from 60 cents to $1 a page
at a printers which defeats making a profit.

Someone I know can print this one their laser printer and did when I first
did it on Microsoft Word and it came out perfect but computer does not have
the software Quark installed and it is not a possibility to install any
other software on the computer with the laser printer because it is at a
work place.

Question) Can a file with text and pictures/graphics that is saved with
Quark Express be "copied" or "transferred" to another format such as
Microsoft Word, so it could be printed with this laser printer but not with
the Quark Software.

Thank you for your time and help, much time invested and am stuck.

Wow. You need to learn to post in the correct newsgroup. I'd look for a
Quark newsgroup if I were you, because they will be able to help you much
more. The only answer I can think to give you is to generate a PDF, since
most public computers have Acrobat Reader installed. However, I cannot help
make your PDF file. Try somewhere else.

Wrong group... but.. Install printer driver on your machine, and
print to file from Quark. Later.. just copy this file to printer
(copy /b filename.prn LPT1:)

or print to pdf and later print form Acrobat Reader.

Export it to PDF. It's the only possibility to keep your layout. I'm not
sure if Quarks can save a document to PDF directly, but there are many
freeware tools you can try (most of them act as a printer, so you only have
to print the doc with this virtual printer). Have a look at google.

Other possibility (depends on your layout needs) is to set the document by
LaTeX, which provide PDF-publishing "out-of-the-box".
