OT: browser wars

Postby Dave Powell, MMfab » Wed, 08 Jul 2009 08:55:55 GMT

As I write this, Techspot's lead story is
"Microsoft warns world of critical security flaw" regarding a dire flaw in
I.E.
and the 2nd is
"Internet Explorer market share continues to fall"

I hope the irony isn't too much for you. But read on if you can stand a
little more....

... M$oft recommends disabling an active-x control, mentioning "Our
investigation has shown that there are no by-design uses for this ActiveX
Control in Internet Explorer...". So why was it even there ?
Anyway, I downloaded their emergency fix (using Firefox 3.5) and ran it.
Its terms and conditions seemed a bit strict for an emergency fix.

From the page where I downloaded it "Note If you are not on the computer
that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to
a CD so that you can run it on the computer that has the problem."

But from the terms & conditions themselves "You may make one backup copy
of the software. You may use it only to reinstall the software", "You may
uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You
may not do so to share this license between devices.", and the ever-popular
"You can recover from Microsoft and its suppliers only direct damages up to
U.S. $5.00."

It's an ActiveX flaw. So "any" version of it.
