Does anyonr have a copy of the addendum to John Holland's book "HP-48SX Engineering Mathematics Library"? It was added to the book in 1993 when the GX came out. There were several commands on the math library that had the same name as ones added to the GX. You had to write three short programs that sent you to the card versions instaed of the built in ones on the GX. Harold A. Climer Dept. 49g+ v92 upgrade problem

Postby shinnyhead » Fri, 13 Jul 2007 19:46:40 GMT

I tried to upgrade my 49g+ to the new v92 ROM

The procedure I used follows:

changed AAA batteries
downloaded new ROM from HP
copied the 4950_92.bin & update.scp to SD card
checked to see if calc read the files - OK
ARCHIVED files from calc. to SD card
checked copy on SD with calc - OK
checked for update files with calc - OK

pressed ON - D then ON - C then the + and - keys
viewed update menu
pressed 1 for UPDATE CODE
pressed 2 for CARD

I get the following error

NO CARD, OR ERROR

I did a card check it is OK

What am I doing wrong?
Do I need to change backup battery also?

my calc VERSION is HP49-C Revision 1.23

Thanks in advance

David

> I get the following error

Some machines only allow ROM upgrades from SD cards with a FAT format,
not FAT 32. I don't know if that's the cause of your problem, but if
your SD card was formatted with FAT 32, try saving its contents
elsewhere, reformatting it to FAT, replacing its files, and then
seeing if your calculator can upgrade from it.

Another workaround is to make sure that the ROM image file is the
first thing on the SD card. Although that works, I find it easier
just to leave the SD card formatted for FAT. (NB: The calculator
itself unfortunately formats large SD cards as FAT 32, so you'll have
to do the formatting on a computer.)

Hope that helps!

By any chance is your card formatted FAT32?

My experience is that rom update from a card requires FAT.

Fresh main batteries are an excellent idea but the backup battery should not
matter.

A 49g+ can only be updated using a card formated as FAT. The 50G
supports FAT32 as well. Since JYA stated a long time ago that the 49G
+ could only support FAT because a FAT32 driver wouldn't fit, and
later when the 50G came out he said it did, something changed between
them to allow it. Maybe slightly more space in the boot section?

Does anyone know how to do the update for the 50g. (I don't have an SD
card handy.) On the PC software, it says to push the RESET button (I'm
guesing it's the thing on the back that you are supposed to push with
a paper clip) and hold + and -- for about 3 seconds. I tried doing
that but nothing comes up. In RPN mode I just get an error that says
something like stack error or invalid operation (something obvious
like that) because I haven't enetered two numbers. Is there another
way to get into the UPDATE CODE/ROM section?

Sorry it has taken so long to get back, I had a bad EKG this week
(negative T-wave)
so the cardiologist wanted to look under the hood.
He found out the one of my arteries had an unusual shape. NO BLOCKAGE!
Maybe someone can make an EKG program and data acquisition box for the
calculator.
This would save a lot of room in the clinics.

Now for the calculator problem

The card is formated to FAT.
I can transfer files to and from the calculator via the SD card but
cannot upgrade the ROM
I have another card that someone used in a PDA but after I format it
as FAT the calc. will not read it.

I will try to clean the card and make sure the upgrade files are the
only thing on the card
I will also try new batteries.

Thanks for the suggestions,

David

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

I had the same problem. Turned out to be the brand of SD card. I tried
to use a lower end one and it would not work. Switched to the San-Disk
brand and all is well now

Solved the problem by buying a San-Disk 256 MB SD card from local
discount merchant for "Big Lots" $8
The install was flawless.

Or what seems to work just as well, change one line in your .kml
file (R49G1024.kml or R49G800.kml, whichever you use) from:
	Rom "ROM.49G"
to:
	Rom "ROMG+.49G"

One thing that I notice with the emulator is that a "FullROM"
self-test fails:

From Fail
Object with bad CRC
Bank 1

Does anyone know what that's all about?

Also, with the ROMG+.49G ROM loaded from the R49G1024.kml script,
the VERSION command returns:

"Version HP48-C
 Revision #2.09"
"Copyright HP 2006"

instead of the:

"Version HP49-C
 Revision #2.09"
"Copyright HP 2006"

that one might expect. But as far as I've noticed, it does indeed
seem to work.

> You can't use a 49G+ ROM in a 49G ... As it uses some of the new opcodes

Okay, but as I understand it, Emu48 emulates (among other things)
the "hardware Saturn processor", not the "Saturn+" processor as on
a real 49g+ or 50g, so the 49g+ and 50g ROMs for Emu48 must be
tweaked back to using the older opcodes, which should work on a
49G. Or do I have some misconceptions about these things?

One strange thing about it is that where I normally expect a "The
system may not be installed. Please go to 'Download Pack' menu."
message, I get some sort of "Bad CRC" message instead. The FullROM
system test fails and VERSION is a bit strange, as in Emu48, but
it seems to work on a real 49G.

> ROMUPLOAD will not work on newer ROM

To be sure, it doesn't work on the real 49g+, but it does work
when running the newer ROM on an emulated 49G.

I tried it, with the above results. You wrote:

If you have a better way to extract the 2.09 ROM to work on a real
49G, then I'd certainly be glad to read it.

2.upgrade 49g => 49g+

there are 3 things that bored me about 49g:
1 display: and i know that 49g+ is a big improvement
2 slow!: is 49g+ faster? also in simple task, like go to stack?
3 keys: at least, are better than in 49g?

tnk u!

3.49G upgrade to 49G+?

I've owned a 49G for a few years now, I use it lightly for various
purposes (mostly simple numeric and matrix calculations, and smallish
UserRPL programs), and I'm weighing the pros and cons of upgrading to a
49G+. I am seeking other people's opinions on whether or not the
upgrade is worth it:

Pros:
Plastic vs rubber keys
Faster computation (2-4x on average)
Brighter screen, better overall appearence
"new toy" value

Cons:
No new math functions
Much worse battery life (my first set of 49g batteries lasted over 1 year)
Poor compatibility with older programs.
USB transfers don't work with Linux (I think)

Don't really care about:
SD cards (1 meg flash is way more than enough for me)
IR transfer

Are there any other factors, either pro or con, that I should take into
consideration? With the current balance, I'm just not sure its worth
the $140.

4.BIOS-setup-problem / RAM-upgrade-problem with Kayak XW/450 W3

Hi,
I've a HP Kayak XW/450 W3 with 512 MB RAM (4 memory modules 128MB
ECC PC100) and two PIII/600MHz. It works fine - with some little
problems:

1. My BIOS version is HK.11.09 from June, 10th 1999. With this I have
a problem: I can't come into Setup with the F2 key, when I press the
key, the start procedure runs till the Setup has to come, but then the
screen is black and nothing more happened. I only can press
Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. A second and third BIOS-Update doesn't
effect.
The Helpdesk from HP can't do anything for me, they say that I have to
make a 'bios crisis recovery', after this a CMOS-Clear. I did it step
by step with a manual from the Helpdesk, but it doesn't solve this
problem.

2. I want to upgrade to 1 GB with 4 modules 256MB ECC PC133 reg.
These modules aren't HP-certified but made by Infineon. They are
compatible with a fsb of 100 MHz, I tested it in my computer at home.
They also are completely o.k., the BIOS counts to 1023.
My problem is, that at boot time, when I press Esc, I can see the BIOS
checking
the memory, but only up to 511. The MaxiLife LCD display on front of
the station finds four dimms of 128MB each. The Kayak started without
any problems the OS and works fine, but only with 512 MB RAM.
The Helpdesk from HP say that I have to take HP-certified memory with
an fsb of 100 MHz, but I think that's not the right way, because the
modules are compatible with 100 MHz (I mailed to Infineon!).

Has anyone an idea?

5.Equation Library on HP49G+ v92 ROM Update.

Well, it's been quite a while since I've used my 49g+ and I've
forgotten quite a lot about it. After digging it out of the closet to
help a lady friend with her physics homework, I spent some time
refamiliarizing myself with it and seeing if there was anything new.
Turns out I missed quite a few firmware updates... mine was still the
original from 2003.

I formatted up a fresh SD card, downloaded the new ROM, extracted it
and the supporting files to the card, and did the flash update. So far
so good- "VERSION" reports 2.09 and all is well. Also included were the
two lib files for the Equation Library, which didn't come with my calc
when it shipped. Following the directions, I copied them from the SD
card to flash, where they now reside. I went to LIB->:2: and there are
now options 226 and 227. Pressing either softkey will put either
"Library 226: EQLIB:Eq..." or "Library 227: EQLIB:Eq..." on the stack,
but nothing executes.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple here, but I just can't get it to
run. Any insight?
