Today's Helpful Little Tip Wanna see more of the current PATH in your header? Using the default flag settings, the 49G and 49g+ (and 48GII?) only show a tiny piece of the current PATH in the header. To force a little more of the PATH to be shown, do both of these: -40 CF -67 SF Not earth-shattering, but it's nice. -Joe-

  • 3. 49G+: ASN "Enter" to 2nd key -- Best way?
Two questions -- First: What, exactly, do you "experts" assign to a second key to effect a USR "Enter" function? If I assign << DUP >> to, say, the <HIST> key, then if I type "5 <HIST>" in USR mode, I get two fives on the bottom two stack levels, but "5 <ENTER>" gives only one. Is there a way to programmatically detect whether a previously-typed string/command is awaiting <ENTER> to be pushed onto the stack (vs. when <ENTER> (i.e., DUP) is pressed by itself)? Second: What is a recommended key to which "Enter" might be assigned? I've been using <HIST> because I'm not sure what <HIST> does . . . I've seen someone use <EEX>, but that seems like it overrides a pretty fundamental operation. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  • 4. Copying HP 48 programs to 49g+
Does anyone know if it is possible to port the programs that I purchased for my HP 48GX i.e. EE Pro, Spice, EE Ref, etc., to the 49G+. I have almost all of this software on the plug in cards, but I would like to run them on my 49. Also is there an equation library for the 49. To this point, I have not switched to the 49 because everything that I use and need is on my 48GX. If it is not possible, I guess I will shelf the 49 until someone can develop the software for it. Thanks, Al

HP 50 compatbility with 49G/ 49G+ programs

Postby Harold A Climer » Sun, 04 Mar 2007 02:01:22 GMT

Is there any way to tell if programs written for the 49G 49G+ are
compatible with the 50?
I have been using my 50 with no added programs( Libs . etc )
installed since I got it; waiting for 50 specific programs to appear.
I was on Dr. Wolfgang Rautenberg's Web Page and was wondering how
many I could run on the 50.

I've installed many libraries and programs on my 50, and all the ones
that claimed compatibility with the 49G+ have run with no issues except
BatStatus returns the wrong voltage (due to the differing battery
configuration). Plenty of 48 programs work too.

As I understand, must programs made for HP49G+ can be used on the HP50
with no troubles.

Hi Harodl.
I think the general rule holds true:
IF
the programs are written in UserRPL
THEN
compatibility is very much likely to exist
ELSE
compatibility is much less likely (programs in SysRPL may use
different entry points from model to model).

Best regards.
Giancarlo

In any case, if you're in doubt, I strongly suggest you get the 50G
emulator and try the program on it before messing up the real thing :)
Best regards.

All official ROM addresses, entry points, commands, etc.
(UserRPL and SysRPL) are *identical*
across the entire series: HP49G/49G+/50G/48Gii

It is almost impossible to differentiate the 49G+ from 50G,
since not only is ROM identical, but also the screen size.

Programs dependent on screen size (especially any which
assume the largest screen size but are run on the smaller
49G or 48Gii) could potentially go wrong, if they were
clumsily written; however, 49G+ and 50G are identical,
so whatever works on 49G+ also works on 50G.

Charge ahead; the 50G is just a 49G+ in a black case;
the name was changed mostly to shed the original
bad hardware reputation of the 49G+ (keyboard-wise),
and to create an illusion of a "new" product
(apparently so successfully that people are afraid
to use 49G+ programs on it, the same way as I'm afraid
to use gasoline bought last year in this year's model autos :)

NOW you've stumbled upon a chap who didn't limit himself
to using officially "stable" addresses in ROM,
and *that's* what, according to what I've read,
caused some crashes of his original 49G programs,
as more recent ROM versions *moved* some of the
never-supported internal code items that he relied upon.

I've read that some folks stepped in to update WR's programs
to keep up with more recent ROM versions, but I have no idea
whether they are all updated for roms 2.09 and/or 2.10
(does anybody know?), nor whether his own web page
contains the same revisions as www.hpcalc.org

One thing's pretty sure, however -- whichever of his libraries
work on 49G+ with rom 2.09 should also work on 50G with rom 2.09,
because rom 2.09 is the same rom 2.09 and the hardware is the same,
so it would be hard to escape not getting identical results on both.

Yup. Because using them allowed him to save an extra 27.52111192
bytes of program space on a 1K program. And everyone knows the only
metric by which to judge a programmer is the size of the code. . .

There are at least two differences between the 50g and the 49g+. The 50g
uses four AAA batteries (higher voltage) instead of three and it has a RS232
serial port in it (as HP says though it really isn't RS232). Anyway, all the
49g+ programs I've tried have worked fine on my 50g .

On Mon, 05 Mar 2007 16:54:30 -0600:

This has about as much effect on program compatibility
as the color of the case :)

Except for the "battery voltage meter program," perhaps.

This causes a problem only when flag -78 is left set
and data transfer by wire is attempted;
the 49G+ ignores flag -78 but 50G then changes
from USB to Serial when I/O commands are used.

Thanks for confirming that, and re-assuring whoever was afraid to try.
