  • 1. What Permissions for adding vdirs?
I'm trying to get an ASP page to add an SQLXML virtual directory to IIS, but I get "Permission Denied" at the line # where the add is. The script works on my machines, but I'm trying to get it to work on a remotely hosted computer. What permissions do I need to have my Hosting Provider give me, so that I can do this? What permissions in general are needed to access / edit the metabase? thanks, Travis
  • 2. Wacky site identifiers
I updated our web server from win 2000 to 2003 by allowing the 2003 installer to reformat the C: drive (where the OS lives). Web content (\inetpub\wwwroot) lives on the D: drive). After 2003 installed, I took ownership of all the content on D:, added the application server "role," allowed the wizard to create a default site (which went on C:), then I added a new site, homing the site at d:\inetpub\wwwroot. I created the same set of permissions on wwwroot as I found on the new default site that the IIS installer had created. I worked through some permission problems and indexer problems but now we're in reasonable shape. One problem: the site identifier number given to new "sites" is insane, like 82346937323--so the logs now go into w3svc82346937323 instead of something more tolerable like w3svc1. Is there anything I can do about this? Is this perhaps an editable feature of the metabase? -- Frank Burleigh Indiana University School of Law XXXX@XXXXX.COM

  • 4. Can't get Web Sharing to work - HELP!
I setup a new website with IIS 6 and it work fine at first. Then after 2 or 3 sites are setup and working, I can't get Web Sharing to work when I setup the directory for another new site. I add the IUSR_name account in directory security, then move to the Web Sharing tab and click on the list of sites, select the one I want and the root symbol pops into the directory list below. I try to add the directory I want and it does not work. As soon as I see the root symbol, I get stuck and can not make the site display a page online no matter what I do. I have spent hours working on it, looked in the documentation and even went out an found books I thought would explain this. No luck. Am I missing something or what? Anyone, anywhere any way, please help. I am at my wits end. I have even had to setup another server just to get my sites online. But I'm not that easy. I'm still working at it... Any help would be great!!! And you may even crack a joke or two about how simple I am. I would agree. Sincerely, Robert McCulloch XXXX@XXXXX.COM .

I just had a new win 3k server set up. I have been trying to access the default site and check mail from the mail server I installed by the ip address. Nothing works the browser or mail client don't seem to find the server. A tech that looked at it says "ip based browsing seems to be disabled" however Terminal Services works fine. Can anyone help me figure this out? thank in advance!! Kevin

My name is Tyrone Clark.
I set up IIS 5.1 a while ago, but now the Default Web
Site won't start.
When I start it manually an error occurs:

Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred.

This happened after I had to reset my PC manually, again
becuase it wont
stop jamming, help on this would also be appreciated.
After the PC ran
scan disk and all the disk checking stuff, I logged in
and IIS wasnt up.
Thanks alot for any help.

I get the above error when I attempt to start the default web site on my XP
server. The only reference to this error in MSDN is QB816944 which states
that it occurs when another application is using port 80. I have run TCPVIEW
and it does not report any other applications using port 80. Is anyone aware
of any other causes of this error? What else should I do to fix the problem?

Many thanks.

5.HELP-An unexpected error occurred during logon

We have an .ASP application running on an IIS 5 W2K
Advanced server, and recently users in another fully
trusted domain are getting HTTP - 500 Internet Server
Errors returned to their browser when accessing the
application. All users within my domain in which is the
Domain that hosts the application can access it fine. On
the application, we are only using Integrated Windows
Authentication. Errors in the security logs on the server
for those trying to access the application who reside in
the other domain are as follows:

Event ID 537
User System
Reason: An unexpected error ocurred durig logon.
Logon type 3
NtlmSsp
NTLM

What's strange is successful logins come in properly
meaning displaying the user's login ID. This is the case
for users that are accesing the app that are from the same
domain as the domain in which hosts the app, and the same
way other logins did a few days ago from other Domains.
Now, any user in another Domain displays the System ID as
in the error above?

If someone could help that would be great.. I have no idea
why this is all of a sudden ocurring as we have not
changed any security and all looks fine.
