Is it possible to limit the time that certain users/groups have internet access? I need to limit the time, for example 6 am to 8 pm, that certain users/groups have internet access. At the same time other users/groups, like the administrators, will continue to have access to the internet. Also the restricted users/groups will continue to have access to internal resources. Hi, As far as I know, ISA has never been hacked. It has been DoSed, but not hacked, if the admin has not, unwillingly, allowed so. However, it is common in networks to see a hardware firewall sitting between ISA and the internet. Can someone explain what are the potential benefits, as well as the necessities if any, of this type of configuration? Thanks Yba

Hi, Is it possible to publish a server through ISA 2004 with a routable IP address, instead of domain name? Thanks Yba
  • 4. Configuration for SMTP in DMZ-PIX
I am setting up an ISA 2006 with 2 NICs (Backend Firewal) to deploy on a network with an existing PIX firewall My topology: LAN 192.168.x.x | | ISA 172.30.20.x | | PIX 172.30.20.x | | | | | DMZ (SMTP server) | 172.30.60.x | Internet I am able to test the SMTP server from the internet thru the PIX and also access via HTTPS to manage. But I cannot access this server from the inside. I get the following error: socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host It seems that the ISA server cannot find this server. The SMTP is located in the DMZ of the PIX firewall. What do I need to define to enable the ISA to find this machine? A New Network? A Network Set? An Address Range? A Computer Set? Or do I have to create a VPN connection to this server? All my firewall rules are working well for other traffic and I have created the rules needed to allow traffic from this server (SMTP publishing rule and HTTPS). Thanks in Advance Mike

Lucoms~1.exe fails at client workstation when liveupdate

ISA Server 2004 2 nics
Internal network running servers - all W2003SP1
Antivirus Server - Symantec Corporate 10

During installation the client installation hangs because the lucoms~1.exe
at the client workstation cannot get out through the ISA 2004 server. We had
no problems with versions 9 and below.

Here is the symantec website posting:
Installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x stops at
"Installing LiveUpdate" when using Microsoft ISA Server 2004 proxy

Situation:
You install Symantec AntiVirus 10.x or Symantec Client Security 3.x while
you are connected through a Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration
(ISA) Server 2004 proxy server. The installation stops at the message
"Installing LiveUpdate."

Solution:
Symantec is investigating this problem to determine a solution. This
document will be updated when new information or a solution is available.

To work around the problem, set an exclusion for Lucoms~1.exe on the
Microsoft ISA Server 2004.
To learn how to set exclusions on the Microsoft ISA Server 2004, see
Microsoft's documentation on the Microsoft ISA Server home page.

How is this accomplished?

That depends on what they mean by "an exclusion". That could mean
anything,...exclusion from what? Exclusion from authentication (use
anonymous)?,...exclusion from the Firewall Service? I guess someone at
Symantec needs to rewrite the article so that it is actually usefull. If I
knew what they were meaning, and maybe more importantly "why" they think
that would work I might be able to help.

I am having the same problem upgrading from 9.0 to 10.02.
I've been told by Symantec the same thing. They sent me below instructions.
I don't know if it works or not. Let me know if you finally figure it out a
way, I have not....

1. Remove the ISA client from the machine being installed to. This worked
even when the machine could no longer access the internet. (Obviously, this
is not an ideal solution in all cases.)

2. On the ISA server, bind the application "lucoms~1.exe" to a proxy so
clients know to let that process have internet access. A quick and dirty
"how to" of how this (on the ISA server):
- select Configuration
- select General
- (on the right hand side of the screen) select Define Client Firewall
Settings
- click the tab for Application Settings
- click the New button
- for Application Name entry enter "lucoms~1.exe" (without the quotation
marks)
- for the Key entry, choose the drop down entry that says "proxy bind IP"
- click OK
- enter a value of "1"
- click OK (again)
After this, customer will need to get the settings from the server to the
client, I am not sure how ISA server does this. (In my case the customer
was uninstalling the client and reinstalling it to force the settings change
immediately, but presumably ISA has some provision to update the client
settings eventually from the server.)

instructions.
a
worked
this

But have you tried just disabling the Firewall Client,...install
Symantec,..then renable the Firewall Client? If that doesn't work, then
remove the FWC,...install Symantec,...reinstall the FWC.

I always use the AV Server to push the AV Client out to the clients,...I
don't sit at each individual machine and install it interactively. I never
had any trouble with it except for Exchange,...with Exchange you have to do
it off the CD, pick Custom Install and *not* install the Email tools part of
the AV Client.

The client I was trying on had the firewall disabled but it didn't install
anyway.
I found below link in the Symantec support that may explain the problem
since we do use ISA server as well.

We use SMS to push out the clients instead of SCC.

After talking to Symantec tech. support, they made me remove the LiveUpdate
and install the latest version 3.0. After that installation went fine. Below
is the link to the newest liveupdate that worked for me.

3.Firewall Client on Server blocking access form workstations?

Hi

I have my ISA Server 2006 (trial edition) loaded on a Windows 2003 Server
running as a workgroup. It has two network cards, the first points to the
internet (10.254.254.1), the second points to my internel network
(192.168.200.5).

I also have a Windows SBS 2003 Server (192.168.200.1) on the internal
network running as a domain controller. The SBS server configures all the XP
workstations via DHCP and points there gateway to the ISA server
(192.168.200.5).

If I tick "Automatically detect settings" in the LAN connections in the
Internet explorer, on any PC - everything works.
If I tick the "Proxy server" option in the LAN connections in the IE on any
PC and point it to 192.168.200.5, port 8080 - everything works.
If I tick "Automatically detect settings" & also configure the "Proxy
server" option, again everything works on all machines.

The problem?

If I setup the firewall client and configure it on all my XP WORKSTATIONS,
everthing works.
However, when I setup the firewall client on my SBS 2003 SERVER, then none
of my workstations can access the SBS server! The workstations are also
extreamly slow to boot.

If I remove the Firewall Client from the SBS 2003 server, everything is
normal again.

I am quite happy letting the clients connect to the ISA server using the WEB
proxy, or SecureNAT client. Or even only have the Firewall Client on the
Workstations. But it fustrates me that I cannot get it to work when I install
the Firewall client on the SBS server.

Is it possible to have the Firewall client in THe SBS 2003 Server?

Can someone point me in the right direction? Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

4.Quarantine - Why does RQC.EXE fail when executed from a W2K Servic

We have written a system service that wraps RQC.EXE so that we can remotely manage quarantine scripts, versions, etc, that also uses a WMI event to trap VPN (RASDIAL) creation such that the operation of the quarantine client is invisible and transparent to our users and does not require the installation of an interactive client. (Whew! long sentence)

Under Windows XP this works perfectly on multiple test machines. However, under Windows 2000 when the service executes RQC.EXE (via CreateProcessA) to lift quarantine after successfully being checked, it always returns -1 (general failure) - also on multiple machines. Executed interactively with the exact same arguments and code, it works correctly (returns 0 for success). Changing the account that the service runs under (as a test) has no impact - it doesn't matter what account the service runs under or what authorization it has. Other tasks executed from the service via CreateProcessA (the quarantine script itself, for example) work correctly and return appropriate values, and the service can also access allowed network resources - the web server where the quarantine script is located (for example).

We would like to use the service approach because we can then lift quarantine if the user creates a VPN connection from the Windows logon screen - which you can't do using a Windows Run registry key - in addition to interactively establishing the tunnel after being logged in.

Any idea why RQC.EXE is failing in this scenario? And as an adjunct question, is there an alternative to using RQC as a console app - perhaps as a COM server that could be linked in to our own service wrapper in a cleaner fashion?

Also, I found another post that indicated that you could turn on RQC tracing using NETSH and that an rqc.log file should appear - but I haven't gotten that to work - no rqc log file is created when rqc is executed.

Help would be much appreciated.
