Hi all, I'm from Poland (thats why I have no idea how mail-in rabate works) and I'm going to buy Notebook in Circuit City (notbook will be ordered by the phone, delivered to home in Chicago). I'm wondering if the mail in rabate presented on Circuit City web pages will be the same as when I order it by phone? There is a difference when I order notebook on internet store or using phone? I hope that mail-in rabate will be the same in both cases. Thank for any informations, DarekM

  • 4. Program backwards compatibility
How likely is backwards compatibility with the latest computers and Windows programs from around 1999? I sort of assume there is no real problem. Then I remember that programs like Borland C++ Builder includes settings that relate to the processor, and I wonder what would happen with Intel Core Duo.
  • 5. VPC vs Partition Magic 8
The VPC was a stickey thing that seemed to be bugged. VCOM's Partiton Magic 8 however is a beautiful piece of software and handles both partition sizing and and the best thing is It does it in the MBR and can handle anything from LINUX to UNIX and W95 thru xp/pro all on the same HD. Its best feature is it actually gives you a "BOOT" menu on start up. I/E you could have xp, linux, w95, unix all on the same HD if its big enuff. For more info do a search on VCOM or Partition Magic. Sloppy Hinges on 1800T

Postby Box134 » Sun, 07 Mar 2004 10:03:15 GMT

The old Compaq Presario 1800T is a champ but it's showing its age a bit. The
screen won't stay in any position away from vertical. Looking closely at the
hinges, it appears they rely on detents in the hinges to provide the holding
force. Unfortunately, the little bumps that provide the braking force become
worn down, losing their effectiveness. Has anyone found a way to fix this?

The hinge is integral to the screen, so I don't see any way to replace just
that part.

This is a pretty late reply. Maybe you'll see this. The manufacturer is
Reell Precision Manufacturing. They've helped a few people, including me,
before, but they're not a retail business. Compaq once sent me the wrong
hinges as a replacement, so that's how I ended up going through Reell (who
kindly replaced them for free -- I did the work). The other options are
Ebay and searching the net for used parts. They're out there. Of course,
they're used, and how much, you'll never know. My experience now is that
they'll go again, eventually. I'm looking for my second replacement pair.

1.Floppy Screen Hinge Problems with Compaq Presario 1800T

Quite a long time ago people posted about this problem and suggested hinge
replacement as a solution for the screen flopping down. After examining my
screen very closely, I decided new hinges (which would probably be very
expensive) might not help in my case.

What happened with my screen was the hinges weren't rotating at the hinge
shaft, the hinge shaft was rotating in the case. That's why the hinges bulge
where the case halves meet when you close it. Compaq picked a crappy way to
attach the hinge to the screen case.

My solution was to take the hinges out, put epoxy glue into the shaft holes,
and freeze the hinges to the case. I was 50 % successful. The right side
worked, the left broke free under torque. I think I moved it before the
epoxy cured; I thought it was four hours, it's actually 24 hours for cure!

Even with one hinge corrected, my screen does stay vertical, but I will
re-do the other side. Yes, this old veteran is almost five, but still works
great as my second computer.

2.Compaq 1800T laptop with integrated ethernet port

I have just purchased a used 1800T that has a on board ethernet port
but it does not seem to work. I can use a ethernet pc card and then
the networking works fine

I am running windows XP pro, in the device manager the only network
device shown is the ethernet pc card. If I remove the card then no
network devices are shown.

Maybe there is a driver I need to load or a bios setting I need to
change?

3.Presario 1800T Laptop Video Question

Can an external laptop power supply go bad in a way that would mess up
the laptop video during booting?

My 1800T laptop recetnly started showing signs of a problem.
About 2 weeks ago, on boot, (with the external power supply), I would
get 3 beeps. But no sign of a problem.

Was the three beeps a warning (video)? THe screen would be black, but
on reboot, it started normally.

The next week, on boot (with power supply), after showing the Compaq
logo, and with Windows starting, the display would go fuzzy in a pixel
manner. Upon reboot, the display would also go white in a gradational
manner.

However, when I switch power supplies, the problem seems to go away.
It's only during the boot that the video problem occurs, and if I
reboot a couple of times, it runs like a champ. But only if I'm on
battery or using my alternat power supply.

Is it possble that the power supply was causing the video issues, or am
I just trying to keep from admitting that my machine is starting the
long slow decline?

Thanks,
Eric

4.Compaq Presario 1800T and I need help!!!

I purchased this laptop off of Ebay for my mother in law. She is terminal
with cancer and we thought it would be great for her to use in the hospital
when she goes for treatment.
The issue is this. The individual who had it prior to me upgraded the hdd
so I am unable to use the restore cd to reload everything. It uses Win98
and that is fine. Problem is, it boots as far as the desktop and then
completely locks up. Does the same thing in Safe Mode. One icon will go
fuzzy and that is it. I have done the POST and it shows no errors. Bios is
fine. CMOS is holding the settings. Works great in DOS. I had no problems
when I loaded the OS. I have checked the heatsink and it is super clean, no
wear. Fan runs. Someone mentioned that the inverter might need replacing
but I don't know. It is in super shape except that it locks up. All I was
going to do was just load it with Win98, install whatever drivers were
needed from Compaq, call it a day, and let my mother in law play her
Solitaire. Does anyone have any ideas on where to get me started?

5.HELP - DVDROM Not Working After XP Ugrade Compaq Presario 1800t

I just recently upgraded my Compaq Presario 1800t from Windows 98 to
XP and now my DVD-ROM does not play movies. It does everything else,
but play DVDs. I installed every DVD program out there, PowerDVD,
WinDVD, InterActual etc, etc and nothing. I installed all drivers and
codecs with no result. Can anyone guide me in the right direction
here? I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you.
