  • 1. Flash Drive Doesn't show up in Exporer
I just restored the XP pro OS in my Thinkpad R40 from the (onboard HDD) restore file system, and now I can't get any flash drives to show up in Explorer, which I use for moving files around. Everything else works perfectly: both USB ports work for other devices, all three flash drives (different kinds and sizes) work fine on other machines, and the computer can access the flash drive from Control PanelAdmin tools/Computer Management, etc. but it just won't show up in the Explorer window. Device manager shows it as working properly. I have Adobe Elements 3 installed and when I plug the drive in, the program fires up and starts scanning any image files on the flash drive. The external drive icon shows up in the Task Bar. Everything works fine except Explorer, and even that worked fine before the OS restore. I've tried going into Device Mgr and uninstalling the driver, allowing it reinstall after a reboot, but still no listing in Explorer. When I do this, I get the expected messages that the drive is installed and working properly. It appears that the problem lies with Explorer, not anywhere else. I would re-install Explorer, but I don't know how (I don't see an Explorer option in Windows Components Wizard). I'm at my wits end on this. Any ideas on how to fix this? - Magnusfarce
  • 2. Read drive from Dell 5150 in 8200
My Dell 5150 notebook will no longer boot up, and there is data on the drive that I need. I figured I might be able to just remove the drive and put it into my Dell 8200 notebook to read it, but maybe it's not that easy. When I tried that the 8200 would start, but displayed only a blank screen. No bootup sequence. Any ideas?
  • 3. Thinkpad T42p and multiple monitors
I've got my T42P setup with an external monitor. The external monitor is setup as the primary and the laptop LCD screen is the secondary monitor. I can drag windows between the 2 just fine. Problem is that the laptop insists on being set to the maximum resolution of 1600x1200. If it set it down to a more readable 1280x1024, I just get a smaller desktop with black bars around it. I've verified that HW display expansion is on in the BIOS (set it both ways, didnt make a difference). ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 driver version is 6.14.10.6512

I am looking to buy a PCMCIA card with 2 USB 2.0 ports and 2 IEEE 1394 ports (4 and 6 pins). This PCMCIA card has a provision for a 12V power jack. What is the need for power input? When should I give input power? Does all FIREWIRE/USB PCMCIA cards need/has such provision? Please let me know better pcmcia card for me. Regards, Vasanth

David, did you fix the problem? I have the same problem.

I got a brand new A10. When I came to play with the touchpad setting,
I found that the browser gestures didn't work. I'm pretty sure that
all I've installed is Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird, plus

1.HP DV5224nr Laptop - "Quickplay" volume control buttons stop working

Hi,

A friend of ours just got an HP DV5224nr laptop, and she is having
trouble with the "Quickplay" volume control buttons. She said that they
have stopped working. She's called into HP tech support, and they had
her do something (sorry, I don't have exact details right now) and the
buttons started working again, but then stopped working awhile later.

I've suggested that she wait a couple of days (she purchased the laptop
2 days ago, and has had to re-set it with tech support twice already)
and see if they stop working again, but then if they did stop working
again, she should probably return the unit and try another one.

I can try to find out exactly what support had her do, but she's not
very technical, and she's not local either, but I was wondering if this
is a common problem with these laptops, or if anyone knows if this might
be a defective unit?

Thanks,
Jim

2.CD-ROM Eject Button Stopped Working

  Hello All,

Recently, the eject button on the CD caddy stopped working. The drive
works fine, plays CDs and DVDs, and ejects if I choose "eject" from the
context menu, but physically pushing the button (my preferred method) no
longer works.

The only real software that was installed around the same time was a
DVD authoring package called TMPGEnc. I tried uninstalling this
software, but the problem persists.

  Any ideas?

  Thanks,

  Ryan

4.hp dv1650ca Synaptics touchpad button not working

I'm boggled by this one....

I have a 3 week old hp dv1650ca laptop.

The touchpad worked fine until yesterday.

After not using the touchpad for 1/2 a day, the left touchpad button
stopped working .

The 'tapping' option also stopped working.

I have updated the driver, bios, done a power drain, system restore,
talked to someone at hp who told me to do a complete system
recovery...I would really like to avoid this.

The strange thing is, when I change to a left handed configuration, the
'tapping' feature works and the physical right button works, but the
physical left button still doesn't work.

I cannot get virtual scrolling to work at all, though I wasn't using
that before anyways.

Between the time the button was last working, and when it stopped
working, I upgraded to directx 9, installed and played video games
using my usual usb mouse...I don't know how this would affect it, but
its all I can think of.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

5.touchpad buttons not working ?!

I have a new (6 mos old) hp pavilion ze4315us which is loaded with
windows XP, and the touchpad buttons have never worked correctly.
Originally, the left-click was ok, but now neither works...

The touchpad pointer works, scroll up/down works, and even the "tap"
select/open functionality works.

I have checked settings and the buttons are not disabled.
I have downloaded and installed the latest driver from synaptics.
I have reset BIOS
I have reset touchpad settings.

How can I tell if this is a hardware problem, or just a setting
somewhere I haven't been able to find yet?

gone crazy,
Dan
