  • 2. Cooling pads?
    Anyone ever use any of these "cooling pads"? They elevate the computer, and supposedly draw the heat away so the fan doesn't have to work as hard (and, in the case of some notebooks, make undue noise). Anyone had any success with them (in terms of mitigating fan noise)? Would you recommend one brand over another? As you may see, this is related to an earlier post of mine ("Fan question"), in which I was complaining about my Fujitsu's movie-projector-like fan sound. Thanks.

  • 5. Average Warranty
    What sort of warranty do the laptops owners in this group commonly get? I noticed common spans are 1, 2, or 3 years with the display usually being separate. I know no one means to drop his/her laptop but how often does it happen? Are there any sort of general "wear and tear" problems that warranty may cover? Thank you to all in advance. -- - Michael J. Sorry but I haven't used a modem in a DOS environment in so long that
I'm not sure I could still do it even if there were anything around for
me to connect to like that these days, so I can't address the question
you asked. That said, I've got to ask: What on earth are *you* still
using this for?

2.PythonD networking--What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I've got a system with plain DOS 6.22 and DJGPP 2.03. I run the
doslfn TSR suggested by the PythonD homepage. Most everything seems to
work fine. I've got a packet driver loaded and a good wattcp.cfg
file, and environment variables that point to things such that other
watt-32 network apps (like lynx.exe and ftp32.exe) work well...

I installed PythondD, and it also runs well--up to a point. I can
">>> import re, sys, os, string" for example, and start python-ing
on my local machine like crazy. However, if I attempt to import any
networking module (socket, urllib, urllib2, httplib, etc.) it crashes
out of python with a SIGSEGV, Page Fault at ... yada yada yada, etc.,
etc., etc... This _always_ happens, whether I run python from
command.com, or under bash; whether I've got the doslfn loaded, or
not...

I can provide more details if anyone cares to try and help me... But
obviously I'm hoping someone can recognize exactly what stupid mistake
I've made, or detail I've overlooked, and can give me a quick answer.

Thank you!

5.random() : What am I doing wrong?

Folks,

Here's an open invitation to make me feel foolish!

Here's the program :

#include <time.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

main()
{ long lng;

  lng = rawclock();
  printf("\nClock = %ld - ", lng);
  srand(lng);
  printf("Random numbers = %ld;  %ld;  %ld",random(),random(),random());
}

The idea is to seed the random number generator from the clock, so that the
first call to random() will always produce a different result.

When I run the program several times, here's what it yields :

Clock = 1392294 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053
Clock = 1393105 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053
Clock = 1393314 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053
Clock = 1393420 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053
Clock = 1393471 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053
Clock = 1393512 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053
Clock = 1393548 - Random numbers = 1027100827;  143302914;  2078917053

The 'random' numbers are the same every time I run the program, yet they are
being seeded be a clock value that is different each time. I guess the wood
is there somewhere, but the trees are getting in the way.

Incidentally, I'm running Windows 2000, SP4.

Advance thanks,

MikeC.
