  • 1. Dell Inspiron e1705 - Can it do 3 displays?
Hello everyone, I am considering getting a Dell Inspiron e1705, and the ability to have two external monitors is one of the criteria for my purchase. Additionally, having the external monitors in addition to the laptop's display would be the best case scenario. I know that the e1705 has both a DVI and a VGA output and I was wondering if anyone has gotten three displays to work on this particular laptop. The spec I am looking at has the nVidia card and I will be getting the docking station / stand for it, in case this makes any difference (I heard this is not possible on ATIs, might be possible with the Nvidia). Thanks! -Alex
  • 2. Audio adapter enquiry
I'm wanting to get an audio adapter for a Toshiba laptop. Either USB connecting or PCMCIA or firewire, whatever is available and best. I find it hard to research this area. Little is in the stores and the Creative website isn't very clear on specifics. I want the ability to have digital audio out, similar to what almost any DVD player has, to connect to a DD5.1, DTS5.1 decoder. I also want analog stereo line input for recording from analog sources like a vinyl record player and other things of that ilk. Also a headphone plug with volume control would be good. Anything sufficient for this and not necessarily top of the range would suit but not cheapest. There is no SPDIF out available at present and the inbuilt audio adapter has no SPDIF capability, so I am assuming an external audio adapter could solve that.
  • 3. computer overheats
I have a Gateway 400VTX laptop. Recently, I have two problems and I wonder if they are connected. First, the computer overheats and then turns itself off. Second, sometimes, when I close the lid, the screen would become dim but would work again when I turn the computer off and back on. About a year ago, I replaced the backlight inverter. Any suggestions for a possible cause of these problems? Any chance that the two problems are related? Thanks

Laptop case with longer retractable handle

Postby udaman » Mon, 14 Feb 2005 04:05:07 GMT

I am tall and I am lookinhg for a rolling laptop case with a
retractable handle that is longer than the typical model. Most have a
maximum distance of 37 to 38 inches from bottom of the case to the top.
I am looking for something maybe around 42 inches or so. Any one know
of any such models? Thank you.

The SwissGear Computer Tote
 http://www.**--****.com/

42" handle, actually too long for my 5.8' frame, but should work for
ya. The item is more than a computer bag, lots of compartments,
doubles as an overnighter bag, it comes with a notebook case which u
can pull out or just put it in one of the compartments.

Good quality, long handle, and a bit big for *just* a laptop case, but
otherwise good 1-bag traveller.

Costco currently sells for $70, but I see lots of auctions at eBay.

Any one know of any such models? On most sites such as ebags.com, they
do not give you this dimension. Thank you.

2.Those Thin Wire Retractable USB Cables Are Worthless...

Those thin wire retractable USB cables are pretty worthless if you ask
me. I have two of them and they rarely work for anything. Even for
devices that doesn't use the 5 volts from the USB ports. And if they do,
the power drops off in a matter of a split second even for a flash
drive.

3.ThinkPad 770Z handle 60GB?

I read somewhere that the 770Z BIOS could handle a 60G drive without
resorting to DiskManager-type overlay software.

Is this true?

Could it handle this drive:

Fujitsu MHT-AH MHT2060AH 60GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

Any comments on the drive?

Thanks.

4.1999 DELL Inspiron 3500 Handle New 20GB HD?

Was contemplating putting in a new hard drive (20GB) into my circa 1999 DELL
PII 233MHZ Inspiron 3500.

Question: Is there a way to be sure that my BIOS will recognize the large
drive? The current HD in it is a pooched 4.1GB. I would be purchasing it off
of one of the venfdors on ebay. Any advice appreciated.

5.Can't network laptop to desktop: LOCAL USER DATABASE HANDLE IS CORRUPT

In trying to network between my E-Machine with XP and my new Sony Vaio
with XP, I am getting the following message from my E-Machine when
trying to establish this connection: local user database handle is
corrupt.

The guy at Best Buy sold me a crossover cable (I have to unhook my
cable modem to the E-Machine to do this at this time) and that didn't
work. Then a friend suggested I try using an LPT1 cable between the 2
systems to do this but haven had any luck yet and thus far, a search
on the internet has not yielded any results.

Any suggestions?
