    Greetings, I have purchased two old VA Linux FullOn 2230 rack mounts, and want to cannibalize/add new components, but it doesn't seem to be particularly easy to get the drives out of the drive bay - anybody have any old manuals for these or know how it's done? Thanks, Ralph Dosser
  • 2. Software raid with external enclosure?
    Hi, Forgive my ignorance, but is it possible to use an external array of disks (e.g., Adaptec FS4100) as JBOD and use software raid running on the host machine? If so, can anyone speak to the bandwidth limitations of this setup, as compared to having the disks enclosed internally? Many thanks, Annie
  • 3. Driver for camera that uses SCSI connection?
    We have an image acquisition system that uses an old Sony DKC-5000 camera. The computer interface is SCSI. No, not USB emulating SCSI, actual SCSI. The Windows driver is a piece of junk, and since virtually no-one uses it anymore, there isn't going to be a replacement. Does anyone have any ideas on if a Linux driver might exist, or how insane it might be to try to interface to a SCSI camera? I need to be able to control the camera as well as get the image data. {Unfortunately there are some mechanical features of the camera and its interface to a microscope that make it difficult/expensive to replace the existing camera.} Thanks for any clues! -frank --

Which is the best hardware to create a CD. DVD burner or CD burner?

Martin.

I agree with both ways.

You're not going to be able to burn DVDs on a CD burner, so you might
as well get a DVD burner to start with.

Martin Fenelon staggered into the Black Sun and said:

It shouldn't matter. Practically every DVD+-RW out there can write
CD-R media as well. The main things you want to do are A) don't buy the
cheapest possible DVD+-RW B) don't use the cheapest available media.
When it comes to hardware and media, you typically get what you pay for.

: /dev/cdroms /mnt/cdroms iso9660 user,ro,noauto 0 0

: none /proc proc defaults 0 0
: /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

It looks like your "/etc/fstab" is not correct. I use "supermount"
with the following (all in one line):
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/cdrom0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0
0 0

If you don't use "supermount", you should have this:
/dev/cdrom0  /mnt/cdrom  iso9660 ro,user,noauto  0  0

where /dev/cdrom0 is a symlink of /dev/cdrom0 -> cdroms/cdrom0
and /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -> ../scsi/host1/bus0/target2/lun0/cd

Mandrake did not create this "/mnt/cdroms" in my installation. Make
sure your mounting directory is already created.

: (2) When I do:

: cat: /dev/cdrom: No such file or directory
: cat: /dev/cdrom0: Input/output error
: cat: /dev/cdroms: Is a directory

: but if I do:
: 'cdplay -c /dev/cdroms'

: I get no message, but the cd does not play.

When you specify device, you want to be sure the actual device exists.
You have specified a directory instead of a real device name (showed
above).

: (3) Using Eroaster, when I ask it to detect the reader and burner, it
: finds /dev/scd0 but I can not play from this location either.

This should work as long as the symlink points to real device as:
/dev/scd0 -> scsi/host1/bus0/target2/lun0/cd

: I would greatly appreciate it because this has been an ongoing issue.

The SCSI device above corresponds to my system. Yours may be
different. If you run "cdrecord -scanbus", it would tell you
everything your OS sees.

You must unmount before you can eject. What type of CD are you trying
to mount?

Audio?  You can't mount those.

Something you burned yourself (maybe under Windows)? Try adding '-t
udf' to the mount command you used above.

Any information you can give us about the CD or (CDs) that you cannot
mount would be very helpful. Is it just one disk in particular (might
be a bad disk) or all CDs?

5.DVD player AND CD Burner - SVCD Videos not accessible in Suse 8.2

I am using Suse 8.2 with Xine or kmplayer and watching movies on DVD
works fine without problems. But i cannot watch movies on SVCD. When
starting Xine or kmplayer to start the SVCD movie, Xine just hangs and
kmplayer does not do anything.
I heard that there might be such problems with Suse 8.2 when there are a
DVD player AND a CD burner installed in the PC - as it is the case in my
PC.
In another PC where there is just one DVD player installed, SVCD movies
can be watched without problems with Suse 8.2 and Xine ...
I have not found a solution yet. Does anyone have an idea ???
