I agree with both ways. more, here: http://www.**--****.com/ ~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Martin Fenelon staggered into the Black Sun and said: It shouldn't matter. Practically every DVD+-RW out there can write CD-R media as well. The main things you want to do are A) don't buy the cheapest possible DVD+-RW B) don't use the cheapest available media. When it comes to hardware and media, you typically get what you pay for. -- ...a 12 kV pulse capacitor a buddy of mine has. Charging it to 4,000 V is enough to vaporize a small peach. I use "supermount" with the following (all in one line): none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/cdrom0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 If you don't use "supermount", you should have this: /dev/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user, noauto 0 0 where /dev/cdrom0 is a symlink of /dev/cdrom0 -> cdroms/cdrom0 and /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -> ../scsi/host1/bus0/target2/lun0/cd Mandrake did not create this "/mnt/cdroms" in my installation. Make sure your mounting directory is already created. : (2) When I do: : 'cat /dev/cd*' : I get: : cat: /dev/cdrom: No such file or directory : cat: /dev/cdrom0: Input/output error : cat: /dev/cdroms: Is a directory : but if I do: : 'cdplay -c /dev/cdroms' : I get no message, but the cd does not play. When you specify device, you want to be sure the actual device exists. You have specified a directory instead of a real device name (showed above). : (3) Using Eroaster, when I ask it to detect the reader and burner, it : finds /dev/scd0 but I can not play from this location either. This should work as long as the symlink points to real device as: /dev/scd0 -> scsi/host1/bus0/target2/lun0/cd : I would greatly appreciate it because this has been an ongoing issue. The SCSI device above corresponds to my system. Yours may be different. If you run "cdrecord -scanbus", it would tell you everything your OS sees.

You must unmount before you can eject. What type of CD are you trying to mount? Audio? You can't mount those. Something you burned yourself (maybe under Windows)? Try adding '-t udf' to the mount command you used above. Any information you can give us about the CD or (CDs) that you cannot mount would be very helpful. Is it just one disk in particular (might be a bad disk) or all CDs?

I'm having trouble finding a up todate list of burners. Running on redhat 9. It doesn't appear that the top mfg. are supported. Pioneeer , Sony , plextor.
5.DVD player AND CD Burner - SVCD Videos not accessible in Suse 8.2
I am using Suse 8.2 with Xine or kmplayer and watching movies on DVD works fine without problems. But i cannot watch movies on SVCD. When starting Xine or kmplayer to start the SVCD movie, Xine just hangs and kmplayer does not do anything. I heard that there might be such problems with Suse 8.2 when there are a DVD player AND a CD burner installed in the PC - as it is the case in my PC. In another PC where there is just one DVD player installed, SVCD movies can be watched without problems with Suse 8.2 and Xine ... I have not found a solution yet. Does anyone have an idea ???
