Hi all, I want to put up a file server for a small 100 MBit-Netzwork (7 stations). So I've got some issues: I intend to use a small (slow) IDE-HD for the OS and Server-Software (Samba), as the OS and Samba is loaded into RAM after the boot sequence. And I want to use two S-ATA-HD with RAID for the file storage. I think this way it is easier to maintain the OS, as it is on a separate device. Is this approach OK or does Samba load data from the IDE-HD while running, so this will slow down the hole system?? Is it possible to us the File-Server with 2 Network-LAN-Cards as a gateway to the Internet for the 7 stations, as my (8 port) switch is full? How much RAM would you suggest? Which Linux-Distribution would you suggest? (security most important) Kindest regards, M. Langbein

- 1. a 'nice' for networks?
Is there a utility in existance that allows one to 'renice' a connection or, better yet all connections a given process is using? Something like: nrenice 10 1251 the nrenice would then tell the kernel to slow down the connections used by process ID 1251 by a 10 level. (with 0 being normal -19 being "hog everything" etc.. just like the nice command does) Just curious if anyone has heard of such a thing. Hello, i'm trying to find a bottelneck in a download procedure using a GSM-modem. We're using FTP to get a number of small files. To get on file there are a number of requests to the FTP server with their corresponding responses. For example there is: Request : TYPE A Response: 200 TYPE set to A Using the GSM connection, there's a delay of about 0.9sec to the Response with a packet length of 86 bytes. Using a DSL-connection (and of course the same FTP-server), the delay is only 0.1sec with a packet length of 1514 bytes. Are there any parameters i can change to speed up the GSM connection? Hello all. I've got the feeling that people prefer to use tcpwrappers instead of xinetd for controlling the acces to the services. But I think xinetd is better for that for many reasons. I was wondering if the reasons for people to prefer tcpwrapper was because there are used to it since the previous versions of Linux with inetd/tcpwrapper ? Tried to install linux-wlan for my DLink wireless card. Compiled the prism2_pci driver and followed all the instructions.. the module does not load however... comes up with a bunch of 'unresolved symbol's when I try to insmod. Anyone know how to fix this? First of all, I'm not even completely sure how to ask this question so please forgive me. I have 3 POP e-mail accounts with different e-mail providers. I installed Postfix, Fetchmail, and bincimapd on my system. (I first tried IMAP2000 but had issues with it.) All 3 daemons/services are working just fine. I have my e-mail client set so that it uses 127.0.0.1 as the SMTP server. Mail gets sent just fine. I can connect to my IMAP server and create folders, copy messages in, and so on. So that part works fine too. My fetchmail is also working fine. It connects to my POP servers and downloads the messages. Now here is the question. How do I "tell" fetchmail (or Postfix?) where to put the e-mail? The problem is when fetchmail brings in the e-mail from my POP accounts, it goes in /var/spool/mail. But when I check my e-mail with my e-mail client, it's looking in $HOME/Maildir I don't (DO NOT) want to set up my e-mail client to connect to my localhost so that I can get the e-mail via POP. That defeats the purpose. (I use several computers and I want to connect to this computer's IMAP server from the other machines so that the e-mail is always in sync regardless which computer I'm using to check my e-mail.) And I know I can't just move or copy the /var/spool/mail/user_name file to $HOME/Maildir because the file formats are different. So how do I get the file processed and delivered into the proper location?

Well at least the smb executable and libraries will be loaded from your os disk. Caching is surely a help here but you should also consider, that the system will also have to swap on the systems disk. So after all I wouldn't user an extra slow disk for this purpose. By the way you mentioned to uses SATA disk as the fast disk. But you know that SATA is only the interface like (parallel) ATA also is. The interface have a speed limit by themselves but usually the disks a slower than the interface so if you use a disk with SATA that does not automatically mean that its faster than a disk with (parallel) ATA interface. 4.nscd strategy files/nis and configuration file
Hello, I have a strange problem on a pop/imap serveur under solaris9. From times to times it seems that processes hangs for something like a minute on a read on /var/run/name_service_door So I wonder if I can change the configureation of nscd which seems to be the process under name_service_door. I have seen that there is a value that tells nscd to check the files under /etc As this serveur is a nis client, can the check of theese files be turned off ? On which basis the nis entry are checked ? f.g.
