Crashes when Looking Up A Word
by StacyKat » Wed, 03 Feb 2010 05:43:54 GMT
Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: imap
My Entourage (2008) recently started crashing every time I look up a word in the dictionary/thesaurus as I am writing an email. This seems to only happen when I right click on the word to open the tool box/dictionary. If I open the tool box/dictionary and type a word directly into the field, it usually doesn't crash. I'm not sure how to fix this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Best,
This could be a sign of database corruption. Let's eliminate your Identity.
1) Under Entourage in the Menu bar, select Switch Identity.
2) Create a new test Identity
3) No need to enter account info...cancel out of setup.
4) Test the problem in the new Identity
If the problem goes away you can try rebuilding your database. It's possible
that rebuilding will not fix the problem and in that case you'll need to
manually move your data over to a new Identity.
If the problem existed in the new Identity, we need to eliminate your
current User's account. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in
Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Test the problem in the new User.
If the problem goes away then there is a conflict or corruption in your
User's folder.
If the problem still exists, it's your base OS files or your Office install.

Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.
How to rebuild:

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

See this page for options. It's not an easy process.

Let us know if you find the culprit.

1.Global Address Look-Ups Fail after Panther 10.3.5 Upgrade
I was running 10.2.8 with Entourage X to our Exchange server and
everything worked fine - Mail, Global Address and Calendar. I just

I can't tell if the crash log provides enough information or not,
however it sure suggests a font error.
There are four places that Word 2004 looks for fonts. Did you replace
all of them?
1) HD:System:Library:Fonts - you'd need administrator access to
replace them
2) HD:Library:Fonts - again, you'd need administrator access to replace
them
3) ~:Library:Fonts - where ~ is your home directory
and
4) HD:System Folder:Fonts - Classic/OS 9 system folder
3.Word 2003, crashes when trying to "look up" or "researc" a word
Every time I try to right click and "look up," alt +click, or pick a word and
go to tools>research, word 2003 crashes. I've attempted to delete registry
information and normal.dot, and I've upgraded to SP3, but the problem
persists.
4."Look Up" or "Research" features cause Word to crash
When trying to use the "Look up" feature from the tools menu or the context
menu, Word crashes. You get a prompt to restart Word with a backup copy.

5.Look Up Crash MS Word
I'm running MS Word 2003 on a Windows XP Dell Inspiron laptop. Whenever I
highlight a word, right click and chose "Look Up", the "Research" pane comes
up, causing Word to Crash.
This wouldn't be a big deal (I just wouldn't do that) except for the fact
that every so often I someone trigger the keystroke that does the same thing
- which is very annoying.
Can someone help me solve this problem? Why would Word crash when trying to
lookup a word?
Thanks!
