  • 1. Extra spaces in outgoing message subjects around umlauted characters
Hello, I have had this odd behaviour with my Entourage 2004 (on 2005 12" PB 1,5GHz w/ 1,25Mb memory running on 10.4.2): Every time I send out messages that have umlaut characters such as (there is no way around this since I am a Finn), Entourage adds blank space before or after umlauted letters (could be with other special characters as well). Example: Original subject: Spam-filtterin stinen tiukemmalle Subject after going through a mailing list (thats why the prefix [Rankat]): [Rankat] Spam-filtterin s t minen tiukemmalle It seems that this happens only to messages that I create since if the subject already has umlauted characters and I just reply to them this does not happen. This has probably everything to do with differences in how Mac and Win systems handle other than basic 7bit ASCII charachters, because about 99,9% of people around here use Windows. Is there a way to fix this? And yes, I do have the latest update (11.1.1) of MacOffice. Mika

Does anyone know the server settings for receiving AOL mail through entourage? If that wouldn work how about forwarding mail in AOL. I want to get away from using AOL, but can walk away from the email address, too many people have it. A client of mine recently asked me if there is any way to set the incoming mail to display in a default font that she selects. I know you can set the fonts for lists and outgoing mail under preferences, but is there any way to make all incoming mail display in say Courier font even if the person sent it in Times? I thought maybe a rule would do it, but there was nothing that could change the style of font, just the size. Downgrade to 2004 from 2008

Postby Zeteboy » Fri, 23 May 2008 08:32:06 GMT

I installed Office 2008 and don't like the interface, so I uninstalled
and re-installed Office 2004.
Now with the old version of Entourage, I get the error message that
says it cannot now read the profile.
Anyone know how I can fix this so I can get my messages back?
Thanks!

Once your Identity is upgraded there is no easy way to go backward. You will
have to manually move your data out of Entourage 2008 into Entourage 2004.

Do you still have your old Entourage 2004 Identity? If yes, then just use
Custom Views to get the new mail for export.

The search only shows the 2008 identity. The 2004 was probably deleted
when it asked if I wanted to remove Office 2004 during the set up
process. I can see all the 2008 message docs, but cannot open them,
even when I re-install Office 2008.

And as an added bonus, Entourage (either version) will not even
startup without the error message coming up. And then it quits.

Removing Office does not touch your data.

 /Users/[Your User Name]/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004
Identities/Main Identity

You can have Office 2004 Identities folder and Office 2008 Identities folder
in the Microsoft User Data folder.

Are you sure this is the correct error wording. The word profile doesn't
seem correct for Entourage.

It says "The identity cannot be opened with this version of
Entourage." It will not even start up now.

The Entourage 2008 Identity was upgraded with SP1. You cannot open it once
it's been upgraded with 12.0.0 or 12.0.1.

Same thing happened with Entourage 2004. There was an upgrade to the
Identity. Once you upgrade to at least 11.3.5, the Identity will open.

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, that Entourage is at 11.0, but the
saved database was saved in a more updated version. Since there was a
database format change in there, Entourage 11.0 cannot open a database
saved in later version.

Hey Diane,
I installed the updates to 2004 and now Entourage opens, so I have not
lost that much after all.
Many thanks for the direction!

Entourage 2008 has lots of improvements. I think you'll be pleased. Have you
discovered the customize toolbar or favorites bar yet?

I did look at some of the options, but the reality is I just don't
have the time nor inclination to play with them. I just needed a
basic email program and was surprised when I ran into so many problems
with it. I'm just glad that 2004 now runs and I have not lost 546
contacts. Again, thanks for the help

Diane,

This thread may be dead, but I saw how helpful you were to Zeteboy, so I
wanted to provide feedback. I found this thread - and quite a few other hits
- in searching for "entourage 2004 downgrade" because I am about to do the
same thing.

I happen to like the new interfaces of MS Office 2008* and I do like the
improvements in Entourage, such as they are. However, the killer for me is
poor, unreliable, ie unacceptable syncing. I have a Garmin device, so I'm not
shocked to find cruddy support. But my boss has a brand new, Mobile 6,
mainstream device and the support for that is unacceptable, too, so after I
have successfully transitioned back to Entourage 2004, I'll be doing the same
for her.

Apple's Sync Services may not be perfect**, but it's a whole lot more stable
than Microsoft lets on. MS appears to toss the ball back over the net rather
than take it's portion of responsibility & remedial action and provide the
required services in good working order. Syncing is a required service. I
hear a lot about lacking Exchange support, but I dare say syncing is more
universal and therefor a higher priority than even that, tho I'm sure
corporate users would take me to task over my opinion.

And to stave off responses that might suggest I try using plug-ins, I have
uses Missing Sync and have also wasted money on PocketMAC (which DESTROYED my
data and never returned my money). Missing Sync is what was working before
the UPgrade broke it.

So, until and unless message syncing works, I cannot use Entourage 2008. And
I feel compelled to provide this same feedback to all forums and articles
about Entourage 2008 that I come across. People need to be aware of what
they're (not) getting.

Thank you for the support, Diane. I am hopeful to read of a sync fix
sometime soon.

* Had the Mac Office UI been as munged up as the PC version, I would
absolutely not even have CONSIDERED "upgrading". That change is pretty
abysmal, IMO. The Mac Office UI changes are much more reasonable and
seemingly more purposeful than the PC changes. Your PC user testing got
skewed somehow, I fear.

** Sync Services interfaces are terrible and completely lacking. I suppose
part of the reason is the very nature of the services - that everyone is
disconnected from each other, with the services as the intermediary. But I
think that puts even more onus on Apple to provide more stringent guidelines
and even certification, if necessary, to ensure the user 1) knows what's
going on at every step and with every involved component; 2) that the user
has control over what's happening. In repeated syncs, the sync never settled
into a state of 'no change'. It's elemental that after repeated syncs with no
data changes on either side, you should expect the process to rapidly close
on a point of stasis, since nothing has changed anywhere and therefor no data
needs to sync. I wold expect this to happen after the first sync, but okay,
maybe it'll take two. After three and a message declares more than 2,000
records require conflict resolution, it's obvious it isn't working. That is
scary and unacceptable and was the final straw causing me to downgrade.

'm hoping when Mobile Me comes out we will see some improvements in
Entourage 2008 syncing. In the mean time, these are my suggestions:

1. Leave Entourage 2008 installed. The fix might be around the corner and
you can quickly get back to work with the current Identity.

2. Reverting to an older version has to be done manually. The Entourage
archive (.rge) files are the easiest and gets most of your data. Some
category info is not carried over. The Rules and Sig files can just be
Option dragged over. You'll have to reset your folder ids in rules.

I would go to all IMAP to make the transition back and later forward easier.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version)

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manual_install.html>

Something to ponder....if sync to contacts is your only problem, you can
have both Entourage 2004 and Entourage 2008 running at the same time. Create
a custom view for contacts Date Created and Date Modified and add those to
Entourage 2004 for syncing. Obviously you would turn off sync in Entourage
2008.

Let me know what you decide and how it works.

Office 2004 for Macs? If so, would I still have the option to go back up Hello, I just bought my first Mac and bought the Office 2008 for Mac software. I think I might have made a bad choice-- prior to my purchase I was using Office 2004 for Windows and am very comfortable with it. Also, most people I know use the .doc not the .docx format, so I am not sure I need Office 2008. Is there a way to downgrade without having to buy Office2004? I don't understand why features from Office 2007 like conditional formatting with the icons etc, Table formatting, and Macros are not included in Office 2008! Why is a program dubbed one year newer to include less features, especially when it is supposed to be compatible with Office 2007. I try to open some of my spreadsheets, only to be informed that certain features are not going to display, and if i save it, they will disappear. I just paid over a hundred bucks to take a step back. (Maybe take a look at Apple's iWork?)

Do I not know how to use excel, or are these features simply not available?

How do I import the messages I have in Entourage 2004 to Entourage X?
I can't run the import feature in X because the latest version is not

backwards is that I can't justify the expense at this time, even
though I prefer it over X.
