  • 1. Can't print from Word X for Mac
I have Office X for Mac. I recently upgraded from OS 9 to OS X (veersion 10.3.5). I can print from other programs (Stickies, Address Book -- even Excel or PowerPoint!). When I try to print from Word, the print job just seems to vanish into the cosmos. I can print from TextEdit, also. I just created a dummy file with one simple line in it, so it's not the complex formatting of the file. I can print from OS 9 and from Classic. I'm stumped! Suggestions?
  • 2. Text Cut Off in Text Box
Word X 10.1.6 in OS X 10.3.8. Recent PowerBook. Older G4 desktop. The right hand 0.2 inches or so of text in a text box is always cut off. The problem is visible in Page Layout view and in all print formats. If I make bigger margins inside the box, the text adjusts to the shorter line but there is still a similar amount cut off on the right. I've tried various fonts and formatting. I've tried selecting different printers. Nothing seems to help. I can "solve" the problem by converting the text box to a frame, but wherever there is a change in paragraph style Word helpfully starts a new frame and adjusts its size to the contents, thus destroying the boxed layout I was after in the first place. -- ... • 3. Sub-totaling and Totaling a column of numbers
Hi Folks! :) I'm using Word X Service Release 1 on my Powerbook G4 with OS 10.3.7... I created an invoice in Word, where the extended total of each item is in the same column that the Sub-total and Total fields are located. I need the Final Total field (Text53) to add only the Sub-total (Text51) and Sales Tax (Text52) fields together but instead the Final Total field is adding the entire column together, essentially charging the customer double for everything. The price of each product is included in the Sub-total field and then added again in the Final Total field. My field names are Text43 thru Text53 and my calculation in Text53 says =sum(Text51,Text52) yet what actually keeps adding together is Text43 thru Text52. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thank you so much! Diane
  • 4. Search and Replace wildcards problem
Hello, I have a document that came from Windows and I'm on a Mac. Apparently, the curly quotes didn't survive the "translation" and I am left with other characters that I need to find and change. The leading quote mark was changed to "A" and the trailing was changed to "@"... So that, for example, the original: "Document Name" was rendered as ADocument Name@ The good thing is that the there is always a blank space preceding that "A". Is this something that can be fixed with the right find/change code? Many thanks, Bill Planey

Hi,

Starters:

15" AL Powerbook 1.5 GHz, 1 Gb ram (Apple on 1 chip), OSX10.4.4 and
OSX10.4.5, 80Gb hard drive (with 16 (mon) or 19 Gb (Wed) free)

I've had this problem for 3 days. After using my computer most of the
day (successfully) Monday to type a paper (with Endnote 8.0 references
added), I was able to type about 7 words, and then the SBBOD came up.
I checked Activitiy Monitor, which said that Word was taking up over
95% of my CPU. I do notice that my computer is getting really hot when
this happens. I'm not able to use word at all, but excel, powerpoint
and entourage are fine.

Here's what I've done:

1. Tried trashing the word plist and repairing permissions. No help on
Monday. Gave up and went to bed.
2. Everything worked fine on Tuesday.
3. On Wednesday, started up my computer, and same problem. (also with
hot computer)
4. Repaired permissions (nothing unusual) Upgraded to OSX10.4.5,
repaired permissions (nothing unusual), uninstalled Office,
re-installed office.
5. Worked for a little while, then the problem started up again.
6. Computer getting hot again.

thanks for your help

Amy

Hi Amy,

Try removing your EndNote CWYW add-in and see if that helps.

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Hi Dayla,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that, but it didn't work. What I
ended up doing was booting up under my other admin account to see if
the problem persisted there. It didn't. So, the problem is in my
current admin account. I don't want to re-install my system software
until I finish my draft, so what I did is this:

I opened word, made a test document and entered several refs. Then I
formatted my document to make sure everything was working there.

OK. Then, I copied and pasted my document into the new one. It seems
to be working for now, and I hope it will get me through the first
draft. After I'm done with that, I'm going to re-install my system
software, and maybe wipe my computer first.

Thanks again,

Amy

Hi Amy,

See the same link as before (Troubleshooting Index), and you'll see a
heading for Document Corruption. Try some of those fixes on a copy of your
old doc to see if it may have been corrupted. EndNote has been linked to
doc corruption, by some (and I don't know anything more about that, sorry).

Also, if it worked in a new account (always a good troubleshooting step),
perhaps a startup item might be interfering. You can test that by logging
into your account with shift held down--this prevents startup items from
loading as usual.

If the problems only occur in one account, it is EXTREMELY unlikely to be a
problem caused by your system installation, so I think the reinstall OS plan
is not a good next step. Rather I would check for
applications/utilities/haxies interfering with each other first.

Daiya

PS. If you are writing a dissertation/manuscript (as most EndNote users
are), here's a bunch of possibly useful links re using Word for long
documents:
 http://www.**--****.com/

PPS. When you said "uninstalled Office", you did run the Remove Office tool
and not just drag it to the trash, right? Dragging to the trash doesn't
work.

I couldn't agree more. I would look for file corruption in either the
Microsoft User Data folder (an add-on, template or something like that
there??) or in the Preferences.

I don;t see any reason why you should have to reinstall the system.

1.Spinning beach ball of death in word 2004 and OS X 10.4.2

Hi,

It happens quite often, that Word 2004 (SP2) on OS X Tiger locks
up for several minutes and sometimes longer. I can't say why and
when it happens because almost everything can provoke it.
Just changing to another font or sending a document to print can
result in a spinning beach ball of death. It's really annoying.

I have deleted com.microsoft.Word.plist inside ~Library\Preferences
but unfortunately it didn't solve the problem, so what can I do?

2.Word and excel constantly giving me 10 - 30 seconds spinning beach balls

Leopard 10.5.4, Word 12.1.2 (2008), 4 GB, fairly new machine 2.6GHz
Intel. Just doing simple things like selecting menus, copy small
amounts of text, going from one word document to another word
document, I am constantly getting a spinning beach ball that lasts 10
- 30 seconds. This seems to happen in both Word and Excel. What
gives? I tried Excel 2004 and did not have this problem at all with
the same document.

3.Spinning beach ball or slow down or freeze on opening windows sourced Word doc

I open a word doc that was emailed to me from a windows user.
I see the document open and can see the first screen of it quickly. Then
Word freezes and if I click on the scroll bar, nothing happens and I get the
spinning beach ball. This lasts for a few minutes then the document is
usable in a normal way. [other programs running work fine during this time,
it only seems to impact Word]
There are no graphics, or linked material that would cause the scroll to
generate processor overhead.
It does not happen with documents created in Word for OS X.

Is anyone experiencing this or am I imagining it.

Thanks, ...Marco.

4.Inserting A Contact in a Word 2004 Table Causes Spinning Beach Ball

I'm trying to insert a contact, and/or an associated address, into a
Word table - something which I could do with alacrity in Word X (on a
good day with a following wind) - but which now causes the
multi-coloured 'pizza of death' to appear.

Dear fellow Word 2004 users, please try this for me.

Open a new blank document.
Insert a two column, to row table.
Insert the curser in the first cell.
Find a contact, using the 'Contact' Toolbar. Click to insert.
After a short pause does the dreaded pizza appear ?
(Word is not responding, dear reader)
Or.
Try clicking on the 'Include Address' button in the 'Contact'
Toolbar.
Does the dreaded pizza appear ?

Why is this, or more to the point, how can I stop it from doing this ?
It would, then, be possible to be able to insert multiple contacts in a
label template which, incidentally, uses a table for formatting.

5.Spinning Beach Ball during Save As in Word

'Save As' in Word used to be instant. Now I get 30 seconds of spinning
beach ball.

I've tried a lot of things, including:

-- disk repair
-- permissions repair
-- zapping PRAM
-- anti-virus scan
-- uninstalling Quicksilver
-- putting iDisk Sync to Manual
-- adding 512Gb RAM (now 1Gb)
-- running MacJanitor
-- running Tiger Cache Cleaner

I'm getting desperate. No clue what to do next. Any suggestions
gratefully received. Thanks.

I'm running Word 2004 for Mac (v.11.2) on a G5 dual 1.8 Ghz, 1Gb RAM.
