Quotation Marks become ANGLE BRACKETS!?!? WHy, why, whyyyyyyyyy?
by antrobus » Sun, 27 Jul 2003 04:00:36 GMT
Word v X. latest service release.
Mac OS 10.2.6
Within a split second of typing a " the " morphs and becomes either
<< or >> depending on which way the quotation marks would ordinarily
"lean." I suspect I've somehow triggered Peruvian or Botswanan
quotation marks, but don't know how I did it.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

This is a fixed autocorrect for French and doubtless other languages.
Have you checked you're in English? Tools > Language -- set English
as default. Failing that, have a look in Tools > Autocorrect. On the
first tab, make sure it's not somehow been set to replace "". If you
want turn off Autocorrect as you type. On the second tab, try
unchecking Replace quotes with smart quotes. This should turn " into
66 and 99 in English, but turning it off might stop it doing what it's
doing.

1.Macro/Word converting double-quote marks into angle quotation marks
Hi all,
I've scripted a vba macro that opens html pages in txt format and adds
the following line after <BODY> (through a search and replace):
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Output.css" />
The problem I'm having is that Word or the macro (don't really know)
is converting the double-quote marks into angled quotation marks
(ASCII 147 and 148), which makes the line above unreadable by the
browser.
I've tried using Chr(34):
"<BODY><link rel=" & Chr(34) & "stylesheet" & Chr(34) & " type=" & Chr
(34) & "text/css" & Chr(34) & " href=" & Chr(34) & "Output.css" & Chr
(34) & " />"
But the browser still can't read it for some reason. I manually copied
the line from a working file, and they look exactly the same, except
that the copied line is recognized by the browser and the line added
by the macro is not.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Carlos
2.Why are quotation marks not appearing?
When I open a Word document in Word 2007 the quotation marks appear as a line
instead. If I clear the formatting or change the font frm courier to courier
new, I do indeed get the quotation marks. Can you explain why this happens?
Other members fo our staff can open the document with no problems with the
formattign. However, mine requires changing either the font or clear some fo
the documents formatting.

4.Why?Why?Why?Why?
Can anyone tell me as to why I have to re-install Word 2002 every week
or so? It will work fine and then for no obvious reason it will present
the message "That it is not installed for the current user and to
re-install it". I am the ONLY frickin' user of this machine.
I have de-installed and re-installed it so many times that I wonder as
to "Why did I ever purchase this piece of crap"?
This pgm came as part of Works Suite 2004.
There must be a registry hack to stabilize this pgm so that I don't have
to re-install the beast.

5.Punctuation marks and quotation marks
We are having a discussion here in the office about
punctuation marks and quotation marks. Some say that the
punctuation marks always belong on the outside of the
quotation marks and others say the punctuation marks are
susposed to go inside of the quotation marks. Such
as "No, I wouldn't." and "No, I wouldn't".
Can anyone tell us which way is proper?
Thanks in advance and I hope I'm in the right group.
