How many people skipped Jaguar for Panther?

I can not afford to spend $130 on system releases each year and so I
skipped Jaguar in the belief that Panther would have more to offer. How
many other people skipped Jaguar for the same reason?

I'm still running 10.1.5 and planning to get Panther. One thing
I've been wondering is: Will Panther be able to upgrade 10.1.5 or
am I going to end up having to buy Jaguar anyway?!

There will be nothing to "upgrade". You'll simply install; it will
install just as well with 10.1.5 having previously been there as with
nothing having previously been there. m.

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

Apple stopped selling the OS as "upgrades" a long time ago (except for
the up-to-date program which is a separate thing). When you by Jaguar,
Panther, etc. you get a completely new license and a fresh install. You
will likely have the option of installing on top of Jaguar (or even
10.1, maybe) but it's not required. You can install to a blank disk.

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

If apple calls it an "upgrade" you don't need the previous release. If
they call it an "update" then you need the previouse release. I don't
think they ever charge for updates and upgrades are never free.

Thanks everyone for the info -- I spent too long in the MS
Windows world and in that world an OS "upgrade" was significantly
less expensive than the OS full install. I'm happy to no longer
be in that world!

Similar Threads: problems and jaguar ( I meant panther)

I sent a posting, which I can't find, but I talked about jaguar, but I
meant that I loaded on Panther!

2.Entourage under Panther can't read database made in Jaguar

This is the second time my Entourage database has fried and neither
'rebuild database' or 'advanced rebuild database' can save it.

So I went back to the last good Main Identity I had which was on my G4
Jaguar machine and brought it over.

To my dismay, Entourage says that it cannot open it because it is the
wrong version. Entourage itself is exactly the same version on both.

When I open Entourage, it gives me the choice of 3 identities:
1) my recent sorely lost version which it can't rebuild (error -40 and
yes I ran fschk and drive was fine)
2) my identity folder from the Jaguar machine which it says is the
wrong version
3) and my pathetic new one which has only today and yesterday's mail

I saw a similiar posting on this site where the solution turned out to
be that the person had the identity folder in the wrong place. that is
not my problem. Anyone have any ideas?

3.Can't move Identiy from Jaguar to Panther

I have Entourage X on an external drive running Jaguar, and I've tried to
move my Main Identity from it to a fresh copy of Ent. X on my internal
drive which is running Panther. I get the message that, "This version of
Entourage cannot open this Identity", but it's precisely the same version
(loaded from my Office X install disc), only the OS is different. Thanks
for any light you can shed.

4.VPC 5 performance OK with Jaguar, horrible with Panther

I'm using VPC 5.0.4, running basic installation of Win98 on it. My machine
is a 667Mhz TiBook with 512MB of memory.

Under 10.1 and then Jaguar, VPC worked fine -- not the fastest but
definitely manageable.

After upgrading to Panther, VPC has become extremely slow -- even with
nothing else running on the Mac and only one app running in VPC, it takes a
second or two for each keypress to show up, and using something as basic as
Internet Explorer is slow enough as to be unworkable.

Nothing about my configuration changed other than the OS upgrade. (I'm now
at 10.3.5.)

Is this normal? Is there anything I can do that will bring performance back
to what I remember under Jaguar? Would freeing up disk space (I only have a
gig or two free) help?

By the way, I've noticed that I'm getting a fair number of page faults while
VPC is running -- much more than when it isn't. Does that mean I need to
allocate memory differently? I've tried giving the VPC image 92MB, 128MB
and 256MB... performance seems worst at 256MB but otherwise I don't see much

5.Dual scroll arrows under Panther or Jaguar

If X has .ini files you could not even see them, all locked away in
the OS X system folder.
