I want to install Fink (from the binary for Power PC), but it says: You cannot install Fink on this volume. Cannot perform symlink test on this volume because of a permissions problem. Try performing the "Repair Disk Permissions" function in Disk Utility. When I do "Repair Disk Permissions" it takes a while and finishes with: ACL found but not expected on "Libraries" ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities" ACL found but not expected on "Applications" Permissions repair complete After that Fink still gives the same error. I am running Mac OS 10.5.2. What can I do? Thanks! Markus
  • 2. sleep command?
Is there a command that can be run from the terminal to make the OSX box sleep? I know about the GUI way, but sometimes I want to start a backup remotely and script to go to sleep afterwards (but not shutdown). TIA!
  • 3. Can Office 2008 and Office 2004 co-exist?
I recently purchased Office 2008 for a Mac Lab of 25 iMacs and then learned that Excel 2008 has been lobotomized by Microsoft so that it no longer includes VBA/Data Analysis and Solver. So I'm wondering if its possible to have Office 2008 and Office 2004 installed at the same time and have Word documents fire-up Word 2008, PowerPoint presentations launch PPT 2008 and Excel spreadsheets open Excel 2004 -- is this possible? And, if so, I'd love some pointers on how to do it? Thanks a bunch.
  • 4. Time Machine disconnects USB backup drive - Any thoughts?
I am using a iOmega USB drive that was recommended and sold by Apple for my Time Machine backup drive. Every time I go to Time Machind and revert to an older date the program freezes and then I get a device removal error. I have to shut off the drive and restart it. But that only allows me to look at one past date before it freezes again. Anyone Know about this problem?? Thanks Ron
  • 5. Dictionary.app IPA shows wrong characters
Those of you familiar with IPA will know the U.S. pronunciation of "cat" is /k/ (ae ligature). But, when set to display pronunciations in U.S. English (IPA), Dictionary.app shows it as /k/ (o with slash.) It's not just with "cat" either. Every word that I can find that should have an in the IPA guide diplays an This was a bug in Tiger too, which was easily fixed with this Terminal command: perl -pi -e 's/\303\270/\303\246/g; tr/\313\214\313\210/\313\210\313\214/'\ /Library/Dictionaries/New\ Oxford\ American\ Dictionary.dict/\ Contents/dict_body The Leopard dictionary file is here: /Library/Dictionaries/New Oxford American Dictionary.dictionary\ /Contents/Body.data ...but it is a binary instead of the XML format used in Tiger, so the fix no longer works. Does anybody have any do-it-yourself fixes, or shall I file a bug report? -- K. Lang may your lum reek.

Help Viewer question

Postby David Sherman » Wed, 03 Nov 2004 21:43:30 GMT

OS 10.3.5

My Help Viewer keeps unexpectedly quitting, usually after I've clicked on a
link for some information. When it doesn't quit it works very slowly.

Is anyone here having this problem? If so do you have a solution for me?

Thanks,
David

In article <BDACEB06.383% XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

It's a fairly common problem and here's what I do.
delete the following items in your user folder:

User/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui
User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist

That fixes the crashing for a while until it starts all over again.

Martin,

Thanks for your swift and helpful reply.

I thought OSX wold eliminate the kind of "tweaking" we had to regularly do
in OS 9, but I guess I was wrong!

Thanks again,
David

5.How to show help ( simple .HTML) file using Help Viewer

I have same problem, Its seems we need to register
HelpBook menualy. I found "SimpleCocoaApp" sample which use the apple
help viewer. I tried the same way
but it didnt work as in cocoa we can set the help menu target/action as
.showHelp
which will take care of invoking Apple Help Viewer and able to show
html help files.
