  • 1. List of files in a package
Hi, I am newbie to Mac OS X. I understand that most of the applications are drag-n-drop, no install or uninstall, huge relief. But some applications do come with an installer and putting files on various locations and they dont have an uninstaller with it. Is there any way to find out what files are in a package? Once this is known i can delete them manually. Second, i see lots of these pkg files in /Library/Receipts directory. What is this directory used for? Thanks in Advance Kiran
  • 2. CPU funny business when plugging speakers in
on a 17" imac with OS 10.3.8 When I plug external speakers into the audio out port, the CPU just goes to town. The leaf blower kicks in :) and System takes 80% of the CPU for 2-odd minutes, then all goes back to normal. (can't remember the two processes running taking up the CPU time...) Anyone else experience this? Or have a clue what the CPU is doing? - J

  • 4. external cd burner recommendation osx
Sorry for posting here, but the hardware group is always like a ghosttown; everyone seems to hang out here. Can someone recommend (based on good personal experience) an external cd burner for osx? My 2x Phillips one is starting to get long in the tooth, not to mention that it's scsi, and I have to boot into my OS9 disk to use it. I would not want an Iomega firewire burner (a friend had nothing but trouble with it), but what about other brands? Whether I get usb or firewire, I'll still need to plug in yet another power brick, right? Although I'll probably use the OSX built-in burning feature for simple burns, will I also be able to use Toast Lite (v4) in Classic with a new burner?

White Spots On Powerbook Display Fixed

Postby Duke Robillard » Thu, 04 Nov 2004 03:49:27 GMT

So, I had the "white spots on display" problem on my TiBook.
A couple of weeks ago, I took it to the Apple store (one of
the new stainless steel ones :->), and they sent it in to
be fixed. I dropped it off on Tuesday night and had it back
on Friday afternoon.

Seems they replaced the screen and the bezel (not the whole
top; I have a little BSD Daemon sticker on my glowing Apple,
and it's still there.) It's much stiffer than the old one,
which might prevent the problem from happening again.

So, it's a bummer about the design flaw, but the warranty
process went smoothly.

2.White Spots in 12" Powerbook?

I have a 12" Powerbook (1.33gHz) that is about six months old. It
appears to be developing the faint white spots that affected many of
the 15" machines a short while ago. I checked out the recall page for
the 15" and saw where it shows the spots to be most often. Sure enough,
the three or four spots I believe are developing on my Powerbook
coincide roughly with the diagram on that page.

My question is: has anyone heard of or knows of any other 12's with
this problem?

I'm pretty certain that this isn't impact damage or abuse. I baby this
laptop, keep it in a good, padded case and out of the cold, heat and
such.

We have a couple of Apple Stores in town & I'll be hitting one of them
with it to see what the folks there have to say.

Cheers.

3.MT_Newswatcher displays black-and-white images as white-on-white

For years I have put up with the above-mentioned quirk.
Full-color images display properly.

At various times I've tried to fix it by deleting preference files or
reinstalling the application. Needles to say, nothing has worked.

I know the images are there - if I select them and then double-click, it
creates a file on y desktop and then launches Preview, which displays
the image properly. Do that 100 times and it gets messy...

Any hints or ideas out there?

TIA
Mike

4.15" Powerbook - Has Apple fixed the LCD white spots and uneven illumination?

I would like to buy a 15" PowerBook, but have read about white spots and
uneven illumination problems. Owners sending recently bought units in for
repair and problem shows up again.

Has Apple fixed this in newly produced units yet? Do you know if a new unit
(manufactured after???) would be okay?

thx.
