  • 1. update changed my login to other...
After updating from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8 and restarting, my log in dialog does not list my users. It only has "other..." listed. When I click on other (my only choice), it gives me a dialog for the user name and password. No problem, you think, until none of the user names and passwords that I was using previously are accepted. I can type in >console for a user name and go to Unix console screen. But I am unix stupid and could only type in my old user names to login with their passwords, they worked. However, as I said I don't know what to do next. I have also booted from my original 10.2 install disks and selected "passwords" from the menu. All my users appear as well as "System Administrator (root user)" and some other name I did not recognize. What can I do next? Reinstall my system? Cut my throat? I can boot from a partition that contains system 9.2.1. So I can edit any files on my system 10 partition if I know what to do. Thanks for any help you can offer, otherwise, cry for me.
  • 2. importing VHS through DV camcorder?
I'm planning borrow a friend's DV camcorder to convert analog video from some VHS tapes to DV over firewire and import the video into the Mac and iMovie. My friend says, however, that iMovie refuses to record if the camera isn't in "play" mode. Now I could use the camera to record to DV tape and then play that back and import to iMovie, or I could buy some software that will record the DV over firewire when the camera isn't in play mode. But is there a simpler, free solution to get iMovie or some other program to record the DV stream directly from firewire while I'm playing the VHS through the DV camera? Thanks, Martin

Hi all

I will take a trip to Hawaii this coming may and was thinking of
taking my Powerbook 15" G4 Aluminum will with in. Only thing is that
United Airlines provides no power-ports on our aircraft. I was looking
to buy an extra battery, but the reviews of this items at the Apple
website are less than stellar. Just wondering if anyone has had any
experience will any of the generic batteries that are available.

Thanks
Michael

Not for that model, but I do with a "Dr. Battery" for the 12" G4
Aluminum. It's physically slightly too large, maybe sticking out 1mm.
Not a big deal. The capacity is better than the Apple batteries, and
I've had it for six months or so and it seems to be holding up well.

I'm not convinced it's better or worse. Not like the generic AC
adapters for the G4, which are MUCH better than the Apple-branded ones.
Knowing it isn't going to short out is worth giving up the recharge
ring.

3.15" powerbook g4 500mHZ will not charge and will not run without a battery

This is an ongoing struggle for me...
my powerbook will no longer charge a battery while plugged in. When my
pb was plugged into the wall it would show the charging icon at and say
"calculating time until full" eternally. I took the PB apart down to
the logic board to see if the power jack was loose, damaged, etc...
Lodged inside the jack was the tip of a charger (you know, the gold
prong that looks like an 1/8th inch). The wierd part about that is
neither of my chargers are missing the tip (but i did buy it used heh).
So i reassembled, plugged it in and the thing booted! my battery icon
said 0% charging. It will run for about 5 minutes but then put itself
to sleep. You can turn it back on for a few minutes but it does the
same thing. I'm wondering if anyone else has had smimilar power
experiences with their machines?

also, the computer will not run plugged into the wall and without a
battery. The color of the powerplug is an amber color, not green,
always.

That's just great :) all 15" Powerbook G4 owners should check out

5.Changing Batteries on PowerBook G4 (Aluminum)

At the advise of my local "Genius," I've bought a new battery for my PowerBook
G4 (aluminum) (just upgraded to Tiger), but I forgot to ask him whether I
can/should change batteries while the computer is asleep as opposed to shut
down. The computer manual implies that that is OK, but at the same time in
the directions for changing batteries gave the direction to shut down the
computer.

Also, is it better to have the computer plugged into the outlet at the time of
the change of battery or not, or does it matter?

Any information/opinion on this would be appreciated.
