One of the users wants to use safari with a proxy. But it seems proxies can only be turned on system-wide? So, if one user enters a proxy server into the preferences it is active for all users?? Is there a solution? If it's PAC files I didn't understand how to use them in this case... Thanks!
  • 3. 160 MB for OsX 10.3.9 not enough?
Hi all. I've bought an used G3 300 Mhz IBook with 160 MB of ram. There was OsX 10.3.0 (7B85). With this version, all okay: -apps run okay(neooffice main window appeared after 1 minute, but this was the only app for which i had to wait, and i remember that openoffice on my linux pc with duron 950 takes the same time) -there is enough free memory after the os booting. But yesterday i tried to upgrade to OsX 10.3.9 (with combo installer update). After that free memory was about 20-15 MB and neooffice opens its main windows slower(some minutes). Then i use "software update" from osX menu. After that free memory went down between 15 and 1 MB(besser, isn't it). I don't know what to do: -a downgrade to OsX 10.3.0(in which way?); -or i've to stop some os services(processes). But i'm new in OsX and i don't know both which processes are really useful and how to make such a kind of changes not only for current session of Os(stopping processes every time Os runs isn't a good idea); -add more Ram? But what type for my IBook (I know that changing Ram for Ibook isn't easy but if it's useful to solve swapping and slow apps running i want to try) Thanks in advance for your replies, Esses.
  • 4. PGP/GPG
Is there a downloadable command line PGP for OS X? I found GPG but that's not exactly the same thing. And the people who now run PGP as a commercial product evidently charge money for their command line client. I'm just starting to learn about this stuff, if anyone can point me in the right direction and/or straighten out my confusion, I'd be grateful.

I miss Expose

Postby clvrmnky » Thu, 11 Dec 2003 02:24:32 GMT

After using nothing but Macs for a week, most of that with Panther, I'm
back at my Win2k box at work hating the fact that I cannot hit F9.

I was dubious at first, but I'm convinced that Expose is not only
useful, but is as useful as I want to make it (i.e., I don't use it as
much as I should due to bad habits).

So, here I am with a desktop full of windows, taskbar full to the gills,
trying to juggle two bugs I'm investigating and I can't get at the
freakin' windows I need in the order I need! I don't even have a clear
picture of what I have open anymore.

Productivity is approaching, but not quite reaching, zero. Panther at
home and Windows at work has made me asymptotic. I really hope
Microsoft steals Expose for longhorn, just so I can benefit at work.

The closest thing to Expose that I've been able to pull off in Windows is
the following. Certainly not elegant, but it helps:

1. Right Click on Taskbar, select either 'Tile Windows Horizontally' or
'Tile Windows Vertically'.
2. Click the title bar of the window you want.
3. Right Click on Taskbar, select 'Undo Tile'.

Pretty clunky series of tasks, and the more windows you have open, the
less useful it is, but it's better than nothing. You can use 'Cascade
Windows' to similar effect.

If only that were a possibility. I code for fun on the Mac. Unix and
Windows pays the bills. This trend is unlikely to change.

I just wish I could move things around in the task bar. Gods, why can't
MS put that in, already!? For example, I have a process worked out for
doing FPGAs, and I want things in a particular order in the task bar so
I can click on down the line with each step.

I noticed that XP now collapses taskbar items into one per app if you
ask it to. Which is ok, I guess, except, of course, that it reinforces
the whole app-centric view of things.

After a few years with my first Mac, I agree that most things I like to
do are "document-based". Even a distinct IDE window or Terminal session
is a different chunk of work, and counts as a document for me.

But jumping around in the taskbar, hunting for a specific windows _is_ a
pain. As a result, I've started using alt-tab a lot more, both in
Windows and Mac. Just one of those things: I never got in the habit of
using it, though I like the Aqua way better, so I use it more now.

Have you ever /been/ to .advocacy? No thanks.

Anyway, there were plenty of threads here about how people are using
Expose, and it's relative merits. All of which is arguably related to
the new Mac "system".

If you disagree, I'm sorry. The posting generated some interesting
conversations, and was short-lived enough that the thin-skinned among us
had ample opportunity to ignore the thread.

Well, you can now at least have file and folder labels in Windows, if that's
any consolation :-)

Windows Exposer to your rescue!! It works on Microsoft Windows and
much like Expos you can quickly tiles your windows, select the
window you want and then have the windows snap back into there
original stacked positions with the selected window on top. Check it
out at http://www.**--****.com/ .

Similar Threads:

1.Word status bar missing edit view save and toolbar missing

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Not sure what I have done or if something has corrupted in word?

When I open word the status bar only shows the following.

WORD INSERT TOOLS WINDOW.

I cannot access toolbox and can only edit by going into word and preferences. Does anyone have any ideas how to restore the settings? I have dumped word and reloaded but it doesn't seem to make a difference so thinking it must be something I have done.

I would be able to work it out on a PC but MAC is a bit alien!!

2.Undo Missing; Copy also Missing

Word in Office 2004 /and/ in Office 2008. There is no "Undo" option in
the Edit Menu. Command-Z works, but I like choice. After Command-Z,
"Redo..." is available in the Edit Menu. Did they replace the Undo item
with Undo in the page toolbar? If so, why doesn't the Redo in the page
toolbar replace the Redo menu item?

Similarly, Copy is missing from the Edit Menu. Command-C works, and the
Paste Command is available in the Edit Menu.

What!?

Furthermore -- and I don't know that this is related to Word -- I
copied some text from a Word 2008 document to paste into a cell in
Dreamweaver. It would not paste unless I selected Paste Special>Text
Only (and no other Text option) in Dreamweaver. I was able to paste the
text from Word into TextEdit, then copy and paste from TextEdit into
the Dreamweaver cell. I can also copy and paste from Word into Pages
and then from Pages to Dreamweaver.

Thanks,

Davoud

3.Entourage X versus Expose in Panther (10.3.x)

I've noticed that after using Expose to switch between the Address
Main Window and Mail Main Window or vice versa, the new window has
inactive column headers, that is they are all "white" rather than one
being highlighted as active. The only remedy I have found is opening
an e-mail found on the window. Then if I return to the window, the
column heading is now active. Very annoying.

The other oddity - After establishing a new e-mail, the header area
becomes inactive if I use Expose to jump to a browser to copy a URL
for posting to the e-mail body. On the return to the e-mail I notice
the header panel is greyed-out. The remedy so far is going back to
the header and clicking on the e-mail address. The panel then becomes
active. Before I caught on to what was happening, I'd send the e-mail
(Entourage weirdly allows this to happen), however, the recipient
would never receive it, nor would I get any notice that there was a
problem.

Like to hear some feedback to the above, plus any other oddity that
arises when Entourage is being used in Panther.

4.Entourage and Expose

When swapping between two Entourage windows using Expose, the scroll
bars on the newly activated (frontmost) window do not activate properly.
All works correctly if I activate the Entourage window when swapping
from another application. Entourage windows also activate properly when
switching to them using any of the conventional (non Expose) methods.

I've not seen this problem with any other application.

I've installed all of the Entourage updates (10.1.5 as I recall) and all
OS X 10.3 updates.

5.Automatic booking of resources- Flaw Exposed

Hi everyone,

I am IT manager of a London Publishing company we have a mixed platform
network with Apple mac computers in our creative department and some legacy
machines in other departments. We are about to go Live with Exchange Server
2003 having migrated over from a mixture of Quickmail Pro Server and Now Up
to Date and Contact (Don't Ask). These are the legacy of my predecessor and
have worked well in a small workgroup but NUTD&C simply cannot cope with
booking meetings for large numbers of people. It is unreliable and as a
result people don't trust or use it.

SO, we made the deciusion to move to Exchange server and Outlook/Entourage
2004 client combo.

We have set up the exchange server and we're happy with the results. The
Outlook clients are a snap to setup fining the server and their accounts
straightaway. Likewise the entourage clients can see their accounts and auto
setup fine (NB this is all down to DNS I reckon)

PROBLEM: I created resource mailboxes for meeting rooms and equipment
I set these up by logging into windows as the resource account and
configuring outlook, then set up the resource to process replies automaticaly.

With the PC Outlook clients they can book the resources and they get a
practically instant response telling them that the resource has been
successfully booked.

With the Mac Entourage clients if they schedule the resource and set up the
meeting the Meeting people get invited but NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS!!!

No auto response.......

If you then log in to the resource account in Windows and open their version
of OUtlook the email request is sat there BUT IT HASN'T BEEN PROCESSED
AUTOMATICALLY aaaaaaaaaaarrrgh!!!!

Why is this happening??????

Can anybody shed any light on this for me, are we doing something wrong or
is the software inherantly flawed.

In all seriousness there is Cash Waiting for someone who can fix this
problem as we need to move this project forward,

In anticipation of a positive response,

Yours sincerely

Gareth Hillary
