• 1. What software do I need to play those samples?
It seems there was something I could do on my beige G3 that I can't do on my PowerBook G4 -- play those snippets of CD tracks they provide on Amazon.com, and ceratin other music sites, such as BMG. It seems that whether I select the RealPlayer version or the Windows Media version of the sample, it cuases a file to be downloaded, which I can;t open because I get the message "QuivkTime error." I do have both AUdacity and AMadeaus installed on my computer. What do I need that I don;t have?
  • 2. override for partial screen use?
I'm trying to work on a powerbook and find Mac's feature of running programs at less than full screen is making it impossible to see what I'm doing. Has anyone written a program to defeat this "feature." TIA Peter
  • 3. Exteranl hard drive making funny noises
I'm using an external Iomega hard drive to back up data, and lately I;ve been having a problem with it. I was hioping someone could tell me whether it was a problem with the drive, or whether I;m doing something to mess it up. The situation is that I was told to avoid actually shutting down my PowerBook whenever possible because of some kind of spark that's generated when you start it up. So I've been putting it to sleep instead. The problem with that is that, even if I "Eject" the hard drive, the switch on the back won;t turn it off. SInce it doesn;t seem like a great idea to leave it running, I;ve been turning it off by switching off the power strip it's plugged into. But the last several times I;ve turned it back on, it's made a very nasty grindind sound for several seconds before mounting, and on one occasion, I actually got an error message that it couldn;lt be recognized, and I had to restart the computer to get it to mount. Am I messing things up by turning it off with the power strip, assuming I always "eject" it first?

Where is this thing? I don't remember what it's called, or where it is. Once opened, it permanently installs an "eject" menu. -- Nobody knows Particle Man.

Protocol on pictures and attachments here; Preview bug?

Postby Salmon Egg » Wed, 13 Jan 2010 03:34:25 GMT

I ran into some different behavior using Preview and Adobe Reader for
the same pdf file. It would be easiest to explain if I could attach
screen shots or Excel spreadsheets. I do not wish to abuse this
newsgroup. What are the rules for such attachments?

I preferred the American Heritage Talking Dictionary to the Merriam
Webster dictionary for that I am doing now. The former does not work
with OSX but worked nicely with OS9. For puzzle solving I often use wild
card searches. For example, I searched using h??t.

With American Heritage, I could just copy the results to the clipboard
and be able to paste them directly into a spreadsheet. With Merriam, I
cannot do so. I "print" the results. Then I save the results as a pdf
file before any real printing takes place.

When I opened this file, it originally opened in Preview. It opens in a
window with the results in a column. I copy this column. When I paste
into an Excel spreadsheet. The results did not paste properly. It tended
to paste two rows next to each other in one cell. Is this something that
should be expected from Preview?

When I opened the same file using Adobe reader and did the same thing,
the paste was as I expected to be. It duplicated the column in an Excel
column with only a single item in a cell. As a consequence of such
things, I have made Adobe Reader the default application for opening pdf
files.

I can't comment on your specific issue, but I can tell you the obvious:
Preview ain't Adobe. How Preview handles PDF files is not the same as how
Adobe (Reader or Acrobat) handles them.

2.Pictures opening in Preview

When I click on a picture it opens in Preview instead of in Explorer.
I have gone to Preferences, into FIle Helpers and reset the files for
GIF, JPEG, etc. to open in Explorer and then saved the changes. It
works fine until I close down Explorer and open it again. It has then
reverted to Preview as the program to open them. Any advice?

This is the only computer that does this at work. I have taken the
preferences from another computer and put them on my computer, and it
still does the same.

4.Preview picture not showing up on saved powerpoints

Hello,

I just upgraded to Office 2008 from Office 2004 and have a question. Whenever I would save a powerpoint presentation in Office 2004, I would always see a preview picture of the first slide to represent the document instead of the default orange powerpoint preview picture. Now in Office 2008, I only get the orange powerpoint preview picture and not a preview of the presentation.
I went to the preferences and to the "save" tab and there is a check mark next to, "save preview picture" but I am still not able to see a preview picture of my presentation.
Is anyone else having this problem? This is only happening in Powerpoint too. I am able to see a preview picture of Word and Excel fine.

Thanks for your help in advance.

5.2004: Insert Picture from File dialog - No preview

What's odd about this is that when using Finder, we can get a preview of the
image without clicking the More Info button, but when we use the Insert
Picture from File browser we don't see the preview on network drives.

On the local drive we see the preview fine.

We copied the images locally and we see them preview just fine, so it's not
the images.

We use Finder to browse the network directory and see the preview just fine,
so we don't think it's the network connection.

We can of course select the image by name and/or click More Info and
everything works fine. The thumbnail preview just isn't working on network
shares.

The network share is on a Windows 2003 server box, and the user has full
permissions. We're using MS Office for Mac 2004 and OS X 10.0.4
